Why MSC Cruises Are So Different to Other Cruise Lines

  • Have you ever considered an MSC Cruise? Wondering if they're a good alternative to the cruise lines that you've cruised with in the past? I've cruise with MSC multiple times as well as many other cruise lines.
I love cruising with MSC but wouldn't recommend them to everybody. In this video, we will discuss why and what makes MSC cruises so different.
It's important to note that if you are considering an MSC for a British Isles cruise that announcements won't be done in multiple languages, the food, and experience onboard will still have an Italian flair though! ;)

Good approach ! Of course there are limits- if you are in the tropics with no air conditioning in your inside cabin, not easy to be happy. But the other extreme are people who judge a WHOLE CRUISE by poor service from one server or by one bad meal. I have a cousin who says Royal is inferior because ONE server was slow to get him a drink ONCE. Absurd.

Exactly!!! Same for me. Happiness begins inside. I can't go places and be anal retentive with false expectations. Expectations not met can be a breeding ground for suffering for those seeking happiness outside themselves. Great review here by this channel.

This is BY FAR the best analysis I have seen about MSC. Mostly we hear the criticisms, but you give a well-rounded picture with great details. We usually do more traditional cruises like Celebrity, but we have done Costa with no expectations and it was fine. Different, very European, but that's why we travel, to immerse ourselves in a different culture. After your review, I see we could definitely do MSC. Thanks, Emma

On an MSC cruise, go to the MDR on Italian Night. They have a very entertaining wait and kitchen staff putting on a show. The service otherwise is very efficient and amicable. All of the Americans complain about all of the languages during the daily announcements. They're just used to the rest of the world speaking their language for them.

    • @joelnielsen4836
      @joelnielsen4836 Před 3 lety

I know many Americans who are bilingual and/or multilingual. They would have little issue figuring out ship announcements given in non-english. Your bias and prejudice have twisted your perspective as you condemn and ridicule and entire population in the hundreds of millions. This is supposed to be a positive and enjoyable topic, not one for bigotry.

My first cruise was with MSC cruise to the Caribbean and I did see those bad reviews and I was nervous about it before we boarded but once we got there, I absolutely loved it. We had a balcony cabin that was really good size. The food was amazing, and the crew was so, so nice to us. The shows every night were great. We had movie nights by the pool at night. I really enjoyed it. But you are so right about the italian aspect, you can definitely feel it on the ship which I don't think it's a bad thing or a good thing, you are just aware of it from the music, the food, the ambiance, etc. Overall, it felt like being in a very fancy european hotel.

MSC is my new favorite line. You can't compete with them on value/quality. Booked the Divinia last minute in 2018 and paid $219/PP FOR A 7 DAY BALCONY ROOM. That was less than $800 TOTAL for a WEEK in a BALCONY stateroom. Merviglia was also great. Looking forward to the seaside next.

My wife and I sailed on the MSC Seaside out of Florida (14 days) back in late Feb 2020 (barely made it off before COVID shut everything down) and we loved it! We normally cruise Carnival, but have sailed R/C, Princess, and Celebrity and we preferred MSC above all of them (we have 20+ cruises under our belts). Our next itinerary is on the Meraviglia in October (we hope, anyway) and are taking our entire family b/c we know how much the grand-kids will love it (especially the Ocean Cay private Island...fabulous!). One thing we both loved were the shows (we saw all of them)...we normally don't care for cruise productions, but the Michael Jackson tribute; Cirque Du Soleil; and the Madame Butterfly version were absolutely stunning!
One of the best cruise companies, IMO (oh yeah, the pizza was out of this world) ;-)

I 100% agree about the food and entertainment. In my opinion, as an italian cruiser, I think they are trying to become THE main cruise company for non-english native speakers. I never tried an american or english cruise line (like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, NCL, P&O, Princess etc) but I guess the only language spoken onboard is english. There are many (older) foreign cruisers who do not speak english but still want to cruise around the world, so MSC might be the right choice for them too!

May I suggest for 1st time cruisers, to book your cruise with a cruise specialist agent. It won't cost more. But there's so much to consider. Age, family size and age of kids. Are you vegan? Can't eat gluten? Also if you really want a balcony (I'd never do Alaska without one), you NEED to know what side of the ship to be on. Same for Venice, Panama Canal and other stops.
Once you do that 1st cruise, you'll know what to watch out for.
BTW cruising is for all types of people who like people. Farmers to large business owners, you'll meet them all. No room for prejudices on a cruise imo.
Thanks for your videos Emma. Your videos always have something I didn't know. Fun to watch.

We went on the MSC Divina for a New Year's cruise. We had never been on a really large ship (3,500 passengers) and thought that maybe it would feel too crowded. We were wrong. There was always a place to go that was out of the hustle and bustle and noise of most of the common areas. There was a lovely private area on one of the upper decks that was great for peace and quiet. Also, and best of all, it was the only cruise line that had afternoon opera! Staterooms were just a nice as the other lines, and I have been on two 7 day cruises solo for $650-AMAZING. AND THE $650 INCLUDES TAX! Multiple language announcements might become tedious, but can be fun as well with pronunciations and trying to determine different words for things. I have family coming from South America and we thought about bringing them around Europe. When I checked current prices of everything it was cheaper to get on MSC Med cruise for €100 per person per night, visiting 3 countries. For that price, as long as I have a bed and some food I'll be happy. Let alone balcony cabins and alcohol package which we both snagged for no extra money. No brainer. Can't wait for it. Thank you, Emma, for helping me pull the trigger cause I also heard very mixed opinions about MSC. And as an ex Princess crew (and pax) I expect things to get weird haha 😄

I appreciate your fair and honest reviews. Although I am a long time avid cruiser with over 10 sailings on most cruise lines, I still rely on your reviews to help me out. I have only four MSC cruises under my belt, but I have grown to love them. First of all, they usually are just a down right bargain compared to most other cruise lines. I have sailed twice on the Bellissima (Inaugural cruise included) and twice on the Meraviglia (also inaugural cruise) out of Southampton while I was living in the UK. I put them into the category of different...not better or worse. Their entertainment is certainly not what you will find on other lines. We had local folk singers/dancers come on board while we in Lisbon and perform a show for us. It was a bit long, but definitely a refreshing change. I find the Cirque du Soleil at Sea shows absolutely amazing. Again, the food is different, but I like it. On each of my four, seven day cruises, I ate at additional cost restaurants four times, in the dining room twice and at the buffet once. Their British pub really isn't all that British, so I've stayed away from that. On the Med cruises I found a lot more families with children. The Caribbean cruises out of Miami had a lot less children. Based on my personal experience, I think MSC's technology package is ahead of Princess. However, there is one thing you didn't mention that I think is noteworthy for those that may be looking to sail MSC out of Miami. In my opinion, their new private island is the best one I've ever been to...and I've been to most. I'm booked on the new Seashore out of Miami in October and the Meraviglia in November...cant wait!!! P.S. Keep up the great work and I knew what you meant when you said "bin." LOL

Our process for choosing a cruise is based on where we want to go. Then it is about dates and timings. Then we look at the cruise companies available. Whoever you choose to cruise with you accept their offering and just get on and enjoy it. If there is a dress code on board the ship then go along with it, dont go and moan about the fact everyone is dressed up or everyone is casual. I was on a P&O cruise and it was formal night, nearly everyone was in best bib and tucker but a few tried to enter one of the main dining rooms in shorts and sweat shirts only to be turned away. We have been on totally casual ships and at best wore slacks and a smart casual shirt. Either way we enjoyed the cruises. Just do your research and accept the vast majority of fellow cruisers like the various codes on the ships.

Sorry to disappoint you, but there is no such thing as a "European feel".
Try an MSC cruise, then TUI, Aida and then Cunard.
      All European, all VERY different.
MSC - despite being based in Switzerland - is purely and 100% Italian.
Gianluigi Aponte comes from Southern Italy, near Naples and that is the culture and atmosphere he has getting created on his ships. He also takes a lot of pride in providing job opportunities in his company for his fellow people from Campania, a very poor region of Italy.
Since MSC is market leader in South America they employ (actually have to due to Brasilian regulations) a lot of crew from South American countries. Also because the core markets are all Latin countries - Italy, Spain, France, Portugal. I believe that also contributes to the atmosphere you find on MSC ships.

I also believe people are too spoiled in life and take things too much for granted.
That's based on behavior i've seen and complaints i've heard. People in general should really learn that it's a PRIVILEGE to cruise (or travel in any way).
It's not normal to eat and drink-all-you-can, it's not normal to snap your fingers and have someone to be at your service. If i hear fellow travelers wining and b***ing about things... i always think: how spoiled can you be complaining about an elevator that's out of order. it's not convenient, but... take the stairs instead.

I stumbled upon an upcoming episode of Mighty Cruise Ship documentary series on the MSC Divina & DVRed it. Upon watching the documentary our decision was made. This was really helpful Emma. I kind of liked the look of the ship. Yes it's probably not going to be to everyone's taste but personally I don't mind a bit of 'fun and kooky' styling even though it can be a little cliche at times. Only found your channel about 5 weeks ago but have been going through ur catalogue and it's great to see both the depth and the frank/ honest commentary you give about the different companies, different styles/ types of cruises out there and all the little hacks you've learnt along your own journey.

Diversity - You'll find a lot more non-English speaking passengers on MSC cruises compared to the big American lines, at least pre-pandemic. On my MSC Mediterranean cruise, English was the 4th in line during announcements, with Italian, French, Spanish taking the top spots. Even on a Caribbean cruise out of Miami back in 2018, about only 50% of passengers were from the US.
