Hugh’s mother wasn’t a Targaryen bastard, she was Saera Targaryen, she was banished by jaehaerys for sleeping around too much and being rebellious. That’s why his mom would tell him, he is no different than Baelons kids. I doubt she would say that if she was a bastard too. I think that’s also why Hugh walks and moves so regal and Stoic. She probably raised him to stand tall as viserys or daemon would. 😊
Please don’t use the phrase ‘commit suicide’. This implies that it is a sin or crime. It is neither. ‘Take their own life’ or similar in the preferred phraseology.

In reality they all chose direct relatives of their former riders - I believe Ulf and Hugh are both grandsons of Jahaerys (Vermithor) and Alysane (Silverwing). Ulf via Baelon(I think) and Hugh via Saera. Seasmoke chose Laenor's half brother.

It is interesting how on the surface it looked like that. Daemon caught on fast what was actually going on, it was all about sheeple herding and recognizing what was needed to be done to attain his final goal. What did the “little theater“ cost Daemon, nothing. If anything he saw it as enhancing the fear factor which historically he would be happy about.

I don't think Ulf broke an egg [they are almost stone-like and need super amounts of consistent heat just to incubate them]. I think he stood on an incubating egg sac instead; also we can see intact eggs inside the egg sac. Furthermore, we see the effort Daemon went to to break an egg sac in a cave to procure dragon eggs in season 1.

After the reviews of the season of The Boys and some of these House of the Dragon episodes I’m starting to think Ryan just watches some highlights and reads what’s written for him. 😄 still like his reviews better than most.
I really liked how this episode emphasized how the dragons have agency and aren't just beasts "controlled" by their riders which is something Viserys alluded to in season 1 when talking to Raenyra. Addam being Laenor's brother it makes sense why Seasmoke would seek him out & choose him since genetically he's so similar.

Couldn't Hughs mother be Saera Targaryan? She was Alysanne and Jahaerys true born daughter who was a wild child and ended up in a pleasure house in Lys? There's no mention of Hugh bring from Lys, but surely a Targaryan working in a brothel, who had close knowledge of her brothers is a pretty big finger point to Saera. That's where my brain went anyway.

In my opinion when Alicent says that "this place is not clean" she is referring to how corrupt and full of sin the red keep is. Her floating in the river in white maybe a nod to a GOT version of being baptised - her way of washing away her sins and being "clean" again.
Almost though she'd start belting out a Westorosi rendition of Will the circle be unbroken.
I believe it was confirmed that that scene of her is to allude to her contemplating taking her life due to her loss of control and hatred for what kings landing has become since her late husbands death.

Yeah, kids that get thrown into ruling in this show either turn into psychopaths (like Joffrey) or bad asses (like the little Mormont girl in the OG Got series and Tully). Or both like Dany. 😂
Corlys does have Targaryen blood. His line comes from Alyssa Velaryon who was a Targaryen princess. It’s even said, “leanor has Targaryen blood on both sides”
is that more or less diluted than steffon darklyn being a grandson of a granddaughter. bc rhaenyra seems to think that he was not targaryen enough. and i think corlys alludes to their mother potentially being targaryen, although he doesn't know her ancestry at all

But due to the fact that they are also from old Valyrian ancestry, when the Targaryen took the throne and had to look for marriages if there were not enough Targaryen women in the direct line to marry all of the males. Or if there were too many females which has intermingled dragon riding blood in the descendants of the driftwood throne by the time of the dance. Alyssa Velaryon was married to aenys I and the only reason that maegor couldn’t wipe out the rest of the targaryens, as she hid the future king from his reach. Also stealing blackfyre from him when she left the keep in the night. Driftmark were Targaryen vassals and they would’ve rather married their kin off to house Velaryon as the blood of old Valyria, even if they were seafarers and not dragon lords, because they were seen as elevated status wise from all other houses in Westeros that was not blood of old Valyria. so well without the Targaryen marriages into house Velaryon (pretty much right after the conquest, aenys I married Alyssa Velaryon , who hid the young child that would one day become king jaehaerys,) so they are known for intermarrying specifically to that house to keep the blood of Valyria strong and to keep the precedence set that even seafarers with the blood of old Valyria was better than other lords. This didn’t change until right around the dance.

It think most of his lines were overdubbed. The audio didn't match the mouth movements. Maybe the kid was going through puberty when they were filming and his voice was changing.

@@eyespy3001 that was my first thought as well - especially the lines while they were in the dining hall. It's a pretty common practice for kids around that age. Outside, I think more of his lines were not ADR.

Corlys definitely has Targaryen blood. The 2 families have been intermarrying since they came to Westeros. 100 years before Aegon’s conquest.
Team Black actually has 7 dragons: Syrax, Caraxes, Vermax, Moondancer, Silverwing, Vermithor and Seasmokes, and 8 if you count the one in the Vale that Baela might claim. And Team Green actually has 3 dragons: Vhagar, Dreamfyre and Daeron's Tessarion, assuming Sunfyre is decommissioned for good.
I took it that Silverwing was defecting to the other side, but what do I know, which would make it 6 to 4

All Silverwing did was fly over King's Landing real quick and then back to Dragonstone. I don't think you can call that switching sides, although that would be interesting and the wrestling fan in me is all about that. lol
The thing about Addam and Allyns lineage is that Aegon the Conquerors Mum was a Velaryon, and after that there have also been plenty of instances of inter marriages between what was left of the old Valyrian houses to keep the "Dragon Blood" going.
Viserys's father wasn't Jaehaerys's. He was the grandson and Baelon was his father. Hugh Hammer was Viserys and Daemon's half-cousin.
Also, I love the comparison between Alicent and Ophelia--I teach Hamlet and we discuss how she is "used" and then discarded by all the men in her life--Hamlet (does he really love her?), her father (used to trap Hamlet for Claudius), and even her own brother, Laertes (doesn't realize her worth until after her death--jumps into her grave). Alicent has been used and discarded by all the men in her life--father, her male heirs, Cole, even Ser Larys.

I actually think Hugh's mother was Saera Targaryen, one of King Jaehaerys' daughters. Hugh doesn't refer to his mother being a bastard but rather that she referred to Baelon as her brother and she was familiar enough with Viserys & Daemon to make the comparison.
Agreed! His mom talked about her brothers - Baelon the Brave and Viserys (and Saera) were among Jahaerys and Alyssane’s 12 children.
@27:13 I disagree I think this was a sanctioned flight because the dragon is wearing a saddle. Prior to Ulf, she had been without a rider for ages. I doubt she had a saddle on that whole time.
I think that after she and Ulf matched up, Rhaenyra or maybe one of the dragon keepers (they could have come back, maybe) put a saddle on the dragon so that he could safely ride her.
Silverwing had been without a rider for years and I don't see a dragon having a saddle on her back for years without a rider.
Also I think the flight was sanctioned because Rhaenyra wanted to send a message.
Sea smoke still had his saddle pretty sure it’s been years since Laenor left, since Rhaenyra had two kids with Daemon.
If you go back and watch, Silverwing was wearing a saddle already in the dragon pit. But I agree that that flight was intentional, otherwise they wouldn't have been lined up ready for action had Aemond not skedaddled.

@@samanthahewitt2507 I read it similar. I interpreted it as intentional flight to go to KL and show they had more dragons. Likely they also thought if Aemond follows on his dragon we may be able to lure him back and defeat him with our three. He was smart enough to back off though. It was a win win situation for them as they saw it. Best case scenario is Aemond follows and they manage to gang up and kill Vhagar then war basically over. If that doesn't happen then they at least show the Green's their new arsenal. As shown, whispers get back so unlikely they can keep the new dragon riders as secret so might as well show their new might.
They should`ve built up the backstory of one of the bastards that ended up burned, just to keep the surprise deaths tradition from game of thrones
Agree, that's kind of my main complaints about this series. They don't do enough build ups. Like Rhaenyra hooked up with several people and almost all of them had no build-up. They forget they gave us the "you know nothing, Jon Snow" 😅
Small dragon math correction but the greens have 3 dragons, not just 1. Helena’s other 2 kids both have dragons, dreamfyre ridden by Helaena and then Tessarion ridden by the brother in olde town Daeron.

Loved the video. One correction: Daemon is capable of inspiring loyalty - many of the Goldcloaks are still loyal to him many years after he was their commander.
Hugh's mother is Seara, Jaeharys' legitimate daughter, the Green's also have Dreamfyre and Tessarion not just Vaegar, and the the "gods" Rheanyra are referring to are likely the Valyrian Gods. They were a polytheist society as well. Many of the dragon's names are named after those gods.

And it seemed pretty obvious to me that ulfs ride through kings landing was planned. When I was first watching I thought he was gonna go to the greens. But it was obviously planned by rhaenyra as a trap for aemond and vhagar which is why she’s standing there with her dragon and vermithor behind her. She probably wasn’t expecting aemond to actually fall for it and ride vhagar right into the dragons den. But at the very least she wanted to show off her new strength as a way of saying this war isn’t gonna be as easy to win as you greens thought

LOVE how the dragon's personalities are showing through here. I felt like Hugh and Vermithor (what a name!) were both searching for meaning and have this gift of desperation to them. Through each other they will find a meaning and purpose/usefulness.
I think Rhaena is Nettles in the show, she will tame Sheepstealer and take the name Nettles to cover up the fact that she's joyriding a dragon instead of raising Rhaenyra's children in Pentos. The books remark on the odd, "father/daughter" relationship between Damon and Nettles. I can see Damon being changed by his time in Harrenhall and finally becoming a good father.
Silverwing flying to King's Landing was definitely planned. She was saddled up and the rest of them were standing there waiting to for Aemond for a show of power.

I didn't realize that Dragonstone and King's Landing were so close to each other. Or at least as the dragon flies.

After all, she had multiple descendants in the Free Cities who appeared at the Great Council
"Let us raise an army of bastards" was such a dope line, especially for this series. But I was annoyed at Jace being so upset about it. My favorite part was how much they took the fans annoyance with rapid cuts to mind. The last season of GoT had so many impossible situations that they just cut away from and then something happened off screen to save the main character, and the GoT fight scenes themselves were cut to action confetti.
That long “one-er” in this HoTD episode with the seamless hidden cuts felt like a lover letter to the fans. It was an amazing technological feat and took so much work to execute, but, gods, was the final product worth it.
It seems like the dragon's personalities are based on cats. Like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. Sometimes they are feisty and demand respect. But sometimes they're really into cuddles. 😂

Rhaenera actually potentially has 8 dragons! Syrax, Vermithor, Silverwing, Seasmoke, Vermax, Moondancer, and maybe Caraxes, and Sheepstealer. Against Vhagar, Dreamfyre, Tessarion, and a super battered Sunfyre things should go her way. But I trust NOTHING.
Sheepstealer doesn't count yet because they're not claimed yet. The Blacks have 7 as of the end of Episode 7. Even though Ryan says there's only 6 (counting Caraxes).
They aren't saying Hugh's mother was a Targ bastard but that she was in fact a Targ princess. Princess Saera who was a psychopath that fled to Essos and became a prostitute and eventually powerful madam and slave owner. The actor did an interview where he "confirms" it.
I disagree that silver wing was an accident. I think she sent Ulf to draw out Vhagar.
I am not so sure that UIlf's ride was "unsanctioned". Another reviewer suggested it was a trap -- draw Vhagar out and have him fly to Dragonstone, where Vermithor, Sea Smoke and Silverwing can triple team him. It also looked like UIlf got some very rudimentary dragon riding training. Now it is taking a chance that Vhagar catches up before he reaches Dragonstone, but if you are going to take a chance that you lose one in the gamble, Silverwing and Uilf are the logical candidates.
