    Spec Ops: The Line has one of the best stories of any game in recent years, and is extremely underrated. Its story is mysterious, twisted and will keep you on the edge of your seat. You might have never heard of this game, or played it, but it's worth watching. As always we included gameplay, dialogue and cutscenes to create one fluid narrative. We hope you enjoy, and if you do, make sure you like, comment and share!

    Synopsis:
    Six months prior to the game, the worst series of dust storms in recorded history began across Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dubai's politicians and wealthy elite downplayed the situation before evacuating in secret, leaving countless Emiratis and foreign migrant workers behind. Colonel John Konrad (Bruce Boxleitner), the decorated but post-traumatic stress disorder-troubled commander of the fictional "Damned 33rd" Infantry Battalion of the United States Army, was returning home with his unit from Afghanistan when the storms struck. Konrad volunteered the Damned 33rd to help the relief efforts, then deserted with the entire unit when ordered to abandon the city and its refugees. As the storms intensified, a massive storm wall engulfed Dubai for miles, disrupting surveillance and communication, air travel, and all but the strongest radio broadcasts. The 33rd declared martial law, and struggled to maintain order amid 80 mph winds, riots, and dwindling resources. The last communication from Dubai stated that the 33rd was attempting to lead a caravan out of the city. The caravan never arrived, and soon afterwards the UAE declared Dubai a no-man's-land. All travel to the city was barred, the 33rd was publicly disavowed for treason, and no further news left the city.

    Just a subtle thing I've noticed, the wording of the objectives gets more informal and crazed as the game progresses into the madness. Starts with things like "Progress towards Dubai" and ends with things like "Run goddamit!" Just love that subtle parallel element of the game!

      tom One thing I liked is how they both try, at every god damn turn, to make it like it was Walker's decision. They act like they have no say in it, when they do. Just like Walker did. Right after Lugo's death, what does Mr. "Save the innocents" ask? For your permission to fire. He needs that justification, he needs someone to blame. He needs to be able to say "Walker made me do this."

    SPOILER ALERT: for anyone studying psychology, it is interesting to know that Walker suffered from Dissociative Identity Disorder. Due to his incredible discomfort with himself and his inability to cope with it, Walker subconsciously projected this sadistic nature of his onto a new persona (Konrad), a feat which his main, conscious self was completely unaware of. This story is incredibly mature and handles the psychological trauma a soldier very well.

    Yeah the fucked up thing is this is the "Happy ending" so to speak, Walker comes to terms with what he's done and the fact he's delusional and mentally broken. So in his guilt in knowing he alone was responsible for the white phosphorus, bringing his men into situations that treaded way beyond a recon mission, getting them killed so he can play hero. And I went along with it all as well, I felt it was going to be run of the mill in terms of story, but step by step I started to realize that I was being gripped by the story and dialog. The pacing was always perfect, and it was soon becoming apparent that this actually had something to say.

The gameplay seems generic but from what i read the developers deliberately used shooter genre clichés in order to illustrate how ludicrous typical shooters are in comparison to real warfare . When things get out of control to this extent, blame gets put on many or focused on one. I don't think Walker was bad, or done wrong in any of this. Sure he was responsible for many deaths, but the whole beginning of the game is the civilians opening fire on them, the 33rd opening fire on them. The whole game is spent trying to piece together what happened, why everyone is going crazy. You just end up going off the deep end yourself after a while.
    Konrad was right, no one was there trying to destroy lives, they were trying to save them. Walker himself states he doesn't want to hurt anyone, yet situation after situation, every single scenario things go as bad as they could. Most of the start of the game is Delta Force trying to just save their own asses. Most of the conflict is from no one communicating to Delta. And yes maybe things would be different if Walker followed orders, but I'd find it hard myself not to get sucked into that mess after a branch of the army tried killing me. or after they tried killing CIA. Too much happened in this story for it to just turn around and throw all the blame on one man.
    I love what they did with this story, but god every character just seems to not be capable of understanding what their "enemies" are fighting for. Or to forgive. Or to accept that they aren't saints.
    I love this story, I hate how the end points the finger at Walker alone. Every man in that place can have it pointed at them. If the end is Walker accepting he fucked up he left there a better man than mostly any soldier still alive.
    Walker isn't a hero in this story, but actual men with the power to kill can learn to be heroes, that's what pisses me off at the end. How can a saint commit a sin? It's because he is a human being, and no matter how humble he is he sometimes loses himself. So how can a killer be a hero? Sometimes, when you realize you earned your ticket to hell, and you actually see everything you done you hold yourself lower than normal, innocent lives. Maybe you don't have the power to judge someone, but you can start to see who is even farther below you on that line you made. If you're to burn, why not drag as many who deserve it more than you with you?

      But it's a personal story, it's not about Dubai or the event happening there, it's about Walker deciding how to deal with them, during this he makes moral choices he ultimately can't handle. It's not the world pointing a finger at Walker, it is himself coming to terms with his actions and deeds. I love the little nod's to this with Lugo and Addams. You can tell Addams is struggling with himself after Lugo got hanged. He even sacrifices himself because he believes he had it coming. Personal stories told in an big event. We just happen to play the man who wears all of it on his shoulders.

    • @fi4re
      @fi4re Před 5 lety +26

      Keep in mind, the original mission was to do some recce and report back. Walker pretty much did everything wrong: he disobeyed orders and tried to turn his tiny group into a 3-man army. He tried to intervene in a conflict that he had no clue about, and he did it in the worst way possible: by using lethal force on everybody that seemed to be the "bad guy" at the time (when in reality, everyone was the bad guy and no one was).
      You might claim that he had no choice. But think about what the "right thing" would have been: if he had followed orders, he could have reported back that there were survivors to whomever sent him. Command could have prepared a whole convoy of tracked vehicles that were fortified against sand (in order to get through the storm), and they could have brought in water, and brought people out. All of the atrocities committed by all sides might have stopped when they realized that help was coming.
      To put it another way: imagine you're part of a recce team sent in to locate Hurricane Katrina survivors. What's better: to report to your superiors when you find survivors? Or to start shooting everyone?

    • @itsmealex8959
      @itsmealex8959 Před 5 lety +10

      Something that might clear things up - Walker is actually dead during this whole thing(or in the process of dying from the helicopter crash). According to the story writer, he likely died in the first helicopter crash and the story is him processing what happened. After the second crash, it's essentially hell for him.
      Another note, there's plenty of scenes which are meant to be hallucinations - so instances where percieved enemies engaged him and his men may not have actually started the engagement.

    The choice of counting to five is deliberate. It's meant to signify Walker going through all five stages of grief. If you don't believe me, listen to Walker's responses.
    1) "You're not real. This is all in my head." (Denial)
    2) "No... All of this, it was your fault!" (Anger)
    3) "I didn't mean to hurt anybody..." (Bargaining)
    4) *Silence* (Depression)
    5) Then "Konrad" asks: "Is this really what you want Walker? So be it." (Acceptance)
    The absolute level of detail in this game, holy fucking shit.

      @Peckh Před 6 lety +3

      The final chapter in the game is though
      Konrads final speach is a compleat 4th wall break as he isnt talkint to walker but the player
      "Your here because you wanted to feel like something your not. A Hero"
      Player: "What happened here was out of my control"
      Konrad "Was it... None of this would of happened if you had just stopped"
      The ending is basicly talking to the player for attempting to justify there actions because its a game. You play a game to feel like a hero and in the end do terrible things and justify it because the "Game never gave you a choice" when all you had to do was just stop and put the game down.
      "On you marched... and for what"
      "It takes a strong man to deny whats right infront of him. And if the truth is undeniable. you make your own"
      In gaming we are trained to shoot the bad guy to beat the game. So when were given the choice to shoot konrad or ourselves we get two outcomes.
      Shooting konrad has him say "It takes a strong man to deny whats right infront of him" then has the 3 worst endings in the game. It basicly shows that even through this entire game and that speech so still believe that Konrad is the villan and that you are justified
      If you shoot yourself the game has the best ending and fades to black.
      In gaming you need to shoot the bad guy
      so what happens when the bad guy is the player

    Around the 25 minute mark when the sand knocks him into a fall deeper and deeper down, it’s just like in silent hill 2 when James Sunderland falls down and down again.
    The sand and sandstorms have got to mean something. How every person he’s killed is like a grain of sand, innumerable, seemingly insignificant, but when stirred, crushes him underneath its weight. Also the obscuring nature of it, and how it is barren and devoid of life. He’s lost in a monotonous haze of his traumatic repression, and yet it knocks him about, blocks him off, and moves him from place to place. Also, have you noticed in the beginning, the first fresh body they find is similar if not identical to Walkers character model?

    Great video! This is very smooth cinematic gameplay that brilliantly shows the storyline of the game. The skilled gameplays and great editing really made the entire video comfortable to watch. Very good job!
    Just a suggestion, it might would have been a good idea to add in some of the loading screen where instead of game tips, it has a direct message towards the player. (such as " American military does not condone firing at unarmed personnel, but who cares since it is not real")
    Because it is a crucial part of the game that conveys the developer's message to gamer. The game is criticism and satire of military shooting games' pro-war theme and its players' notions of war developed from such games.
    But anyway, keep up the good work!

    Konrad and Walker are the same obviously
    A pretty solid theory is that Konrad and the Delta theme represent different parts of Konrad's personality all fighting in Hell. Konrad even admits that it could be that he made up Walker in his head, rather than Walker making up Konrad's order.
    Walker and the whole Delta team could be a metaphorical projection, created by Konrad for the destruction and endless death in Dubai that Konrad unintentionally committed and his guilt for that. Unless one kills the other, Konrad or his projected proxy, Walker, will only repeat the events of the game over and over.
