    As other comments say, this is not any sort of precision gear. But on top of that, how do you insure there are an integer number of teeth on the full circle, exactly?

      Serious skull sweat involved in getting the threads to stay aligned as the circle is completed. Diameter needs to be a precise multiple of the thread pitch.

    I used to cut nut threads the same way. Just set the lathe to the right pitch, set the right depth for the particular thread and let it go through once, and it is done. I made hundreds of threads without needing the grind/replace the carbide insert in a single point tool. I was making M70x1.5 threads.

      It’s not that hard if you know basic machining math.
      1. Look at the “thread” around the gear as a flat surface; you need exact diameter at the center to do this.
      2. You will need the exact pitch of the tap being used to proceed.
      3. Divide the diameter of the gear blank by the pitch, adjust the blank diameter until you get the exact number of teeth required to go around the blank and the next tooth lines up perfectly to the next groove on the gear.

    It’s a good idea, but you can tell that at the end of his machining, the threads are not matching when it reaches a complete circle. He lost sight that the workpiece has to be a specific diameter in order for the pitch of the thread will match the circumference. Otherwise, he’s not going to get complete threads all the way around.

    You have to have the diameter of the worm gear blank exactly correct for the pitch of the thread, called the circular pitch, or else as the worm gear rotates the threads won’t cut in the same place -they will double cut -and ruin the gear teeth

      I’ve tried this method several times and it never works. Because the diameter of the blank is bigger than the circular pitch diameter as soon as the cutter connects the surface it will try to cut the number of teeth to suit that diameter. I have been gear cutting for over70 years and always use a dividing head and fly cutters which I make with the aid of a slide projector converted to a shadow graph. Amusingly my workshop is not big enough to get a 50:1 magnification so everything is drawn to a scale of 27.5 just to add spice to the working day.

    • @bogywankenobi3959
      @bogywankenobi3959 Před 6 měsíci +3

      This is not a bad idea per se. But it is being executed wrong. Let me see if I can explain in words what I mean . . . When he is finished the center of the tap, or the axis of the tap, will be at (one of) the correct distance(s) from the center of the worm wheel. What he needs to do is start with the worm wheel (and thus the cross slide) already at its final position but with the worm wheel off to the right of the end of the tap. Then bring the wheel into the end of the tap until it starts turning under the influence of the tap. After a few rotations of the worm wheel, he could move the worm wheel to the left a little more and thus allow the tap to start cutting a little deeper. After a few more revolutions he again moves the wheel "deeper" into the end of the tap and keep this up until the wheel is being cut from the center of the tap. If the tap starts along the line that it will end up on, this method could work.

      Yes, it would be ......BUT .....the material must be "heat-treatable" first ......and you could NOT machine this kind of material in this manner because it would be far too hard and simply is NOT "free-machining". This material would be a very low carbon and NOT alloyed. 1018 mild steel is likely what is used here ....and cannot be heat treated.
