Great review. I was tempted. But besides the fact that I already have not as good but adequate big daypacks, the deal killers for me were: 1) computer sleeve too small for my laptop 2) no water bottle holder...both of my lesser daypacks have two 3) the price. I'm already gagging at $135-140, but if it didn't have these deal killers I'd go for it. I liked the sling option and the substantial secret compartment. I was looking at their Trident 20 as well. But while tempted, I have better ways to spend my $150. Thank you again for the excellent and thorough review. You do good work. Greetings from the Czech Republic.

Just wish Vanquest would make this in a little larger version, like around 23 liters, for a 15" laptop. Then it would be great.
I transitioned from Vanquest (Trident) to GORUCK. The learning curve was steep as the GORUCK models lack almost any organization, but you're left organizing how you wish rather than how the bag's design semi-necessitates. This forced me to scale back my EDC items. I do miss the orange interior of Vanquest, but I received in exchange what is likely the most robust backpack on the market.

This bag, in particular regarding the top front pocket, seems to have addressed one of the bigger issues I’ve had with Vanquest bags. The top front pocket (tfp) is usually independent from the rest of the pack’s body and will weigh and deform the pack if you have more items there, usually shifting the center of gravity and causing the pack to slouch to the point of tipping it forwards. That goes for both the Trident-20 and Trident-31. And the Falcon-31 doesn’t even have a ftp that fits anything and has that bend that. It’s more designed for flexible items like maps.
Overall, this pack seems to be a step in the right direction. Hopefully that make a 30L version and definitely include a dedicated water bottle pocket. I’ll stick to my Trident-31 for now.

As usual, a well-organised and structured video. One con of the backpack: lacking a hip/waist strap for better weight distribution, thus better health and comfort when carrying heavy gear over longer periods.
Thanks! Yeah, I wonder if it's a little too small to warrant a hip strap, as I don't think it's intended to be loaded to heavy.

By the way, 15 inch laptop can be stored right? even not in sleeve but main compartment.
I tired my 15 inch portable monitor, and it just fits little tight in the sleeve. no margin or gap should I say? whatever don't have at all.
The monitor is V15FP(vinpok split OEM model?) and its height is 223.5mm. so, to store something in sleeve, height must be within 22cm.

The Pygmy will hold a bigger laptop but not securely...it’s very much like what Cliff showed in this video with the Katara. I have always just copied what Cliff uses for my setup but he threw me for a loop when he went to a messenger bag. I’m a backpack junky but I can’t find one that I think is perfect. I’m currently using/testing a Keysmart Urban 21 Commuter backpack but I was very much interested in this Katara.
Merry Christmas, Hannibal! I don't think either the Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon-II or KATARA-16 is the best for 15" laptops on up. The KATARA-16 has much better pockets and compartments. The Falcon-II has dedicated water bottle holders. I think the Vanquest Trident-31 is my favorite for EDC organization. My wife currently uses the Falcon-II as an EDC bag (diaper bag + purse).
Would be wonderful if you could share the exact model of the HP laptop that fits into the sleeve that we see at 9:42. Thank you.

If you stuff the main compartment and the admin pouches to the max, are you still able to access the conceal carry pouch? I feel that companies with this pouch, need to add a little additional fabric to give room to be able to fit your hand in the pocket and quickly pull your CCW. My 511 packs have this problem, how about this pack?
It's definitely a tight fit when filled to the max. I think this would also make a great secret vault area for emergency cash and documentation.
Vanquest makes such high quality products but like you I have a 15 inch laptop. Are we in the minority?
It looks like it. A lot of my MAC friends have smaller laptops than me.
If you get the trident 21 it fits my absurdly large 15.6 laptop with relative ease....the pack is a bit larger at 21 liters opposed to 16 but still performs flawless for my needs....cant afford a 2k mac laptop lol

So, not entirely sure, but aren't you supposed to use a particular sling (mainly the one with the female portion chest strap) to set up the sling carry, so that you can use the other bottom left over as a stabilization strap; by attaching it to the chest strap ?
Yeah, you're probably right. I don't often use a sling bag if I have the option to use a dual strap backpack.

I can see the value of this bag except that I just bought a new Maxpedition cross-carry bag to R&R my last EDC bag which was a Billion years old and (literally) coming apart at several pocket/seam joints (could likely be repaired with a HD sewing machine and I am thinking about taking it to a tent repair store for their perceptions as to whether or not repairs are a smart consideration or if it's seen better days and time to send it to "Murse" (i.e., Man Purse) Heaven. LOL
The problem is that the Maxpedition bag is just a bit larger than the older bag and I managed to find more "stuff" to add to what was already a modestly heavy bag.
So were I to buy this one, notwithstanding the significantly higher price, I'd worry I'd end up carrying yet MORE STUFF!
After that comes a full-sized backpack which I fear would cause folks to see a reasonably dressed homeless guy. And convenience stores would want me to leave it at the counter while I shopped and the movie theater would he suspicious about me sneaking in my own popcorn, sodas, Red Vines and such (COME ON!!! You all KNOW you do that too! At least I only take in one spare can of soda cuz they charge STOOPID prices!!!).
Certainly NOT the Gray Man approach I desire.
And after the bigger pack, what's next?!? A wheelbarrow??!!??
My point is there comes a point of diminishing returns when it comes to a modest EDC bag.
In my current EDC Maxpedition I have what I call my "IFAK-Light" without too many BooBoo items for passerby's in distress. I'm trying to keep it to the "REAL" basics WRT Active Shooter scenarios and being able to treat myself and/or Loved one if she is with me and be able to GTFOD with minimal troubles.
To that end I also carry a "spare" CCW (my G27) with 2 or 3 spare mags for it and/or the G22 which is always CCW on my person.
Along with a few other quality odds and ends, I really DON'T want to carry a full-blown medic kit so all that said, just the HD basics.
So, honestly, I don't see this bag in my future but can see the value of it for someone in need of such a bag for EDC or other use as long as they keep the possible pitfalls you mentioned in mind.
Most importantly the possibility of the major compartment fully opening at a most inopportune time thus spilling important and/or pricey items on a concrete floor or into a nice water fountain. BUMMER!!
One way to prevent the above, and beyond those retaining straps on either side, would be to use a Safety Pin across each side of the zipper at a "Drop Dead" spot as a backup.
Not terribly inconvenient but certainly money and time well spent.

I disagree about the bag looking "tactical." My wife and I made an overnight trip to Boston, and I took this bag with us. We went to the MIT Museum, and the cashier gave me a discount. I asked why I received it and she said "I saw the bag and thought you might have been in the military." (I weigh 275 pounds and have medium length hair. I do not look like I belong in the military.) Later that day, I ordered the EDC Ready Pack from Vertx in their sienna/mocha color. You might want to check it out. Their designs are lightyears ahead ahead of the competition while the quality is on par with the other major companies.
Additionally, the Vertx bag has two dedicated water bottle spots, can fit a 15" Macbook Pro, has better straps, and has better ventilation.

That particular shot was filmed on a trail at Mount Rainier next to Paradise Lodge. Most of the footage for this video was filmed at Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens in Washington State.

Just a honest positive constructive comment from a arborist, hunter, fisherman survival fan.
I got my Vanquest Katara 16 after saving for a while and watching a bunch o videos on this pack.
No one ever mention about the hot spots on you shoulders when you wear this pack even with the two straps
Don't even mention when you wear it on the sling set up and you load the pack.
And by all means I can handle a pack and haul loads like a mule belive me, The shoulder strap rides high on my shoulder and works his way to your neck when trek trough the woods to the point that rubs on my neck and rubs my skin raw.. And is on the right strap configuration to use as a sling.
I'm not trying to blast anyone I just wanna give a honest constructive opinion from the consumer side.
Hope this is helps other customers and manufactures to improve their gear

Great review. I still prefer the Vanquest Trident backpack for EDC use. I am curious to know which you think is better and what would make you choose one over the other. Vanquest makes the best products and I believe they are superior to 5.11 and Maxpedition!!
For "my" EDC purposes, I like carrying more stuff, so the Trident-31 works better for me.

At $150, I would rather get a (another) ROVER 35L PACK, by ONETIGRIS, @ $87, a little bigger, but more compartments. Been using mine for 1.5 years as our kids day bag, (food, water, medical kit, etc. etc.).
Yeah, I can see that price tag being a little steep for a smaller backpack. You start getting into the territory of other really nice bags.
