Jay Z never owned Def Jam ! He was an employee! He never signed Nas! Nas signed to DEF JAM not Jay Z
Ora Maponyane But he was the president of Def Jam at the time and he had the final say about who gets signed and the terms of the deal. Being the president of a company is a whole lot different than just being an employee.
If the premise was that Jay Z signed Nas to Roc-a-fela then this notion that Nas lost the war because he signed to Jay Z would hold some sort of weight but Nas signed to Def Jam because of L.A. Reid. LA merely informed Jay Z that Nas is coming Jay Z didnt confound that deal he was just a face to attract other artists like Rihanna, Neyo, Teiraa Marie to the label after Lyor left and they needed to take a new direction.

Jeezy Rick Ross Rihanna were all signed when Jay was President but Jay doesn't get credit for those signings. Google Rick Ross signing Google Jeezy signing Google Rih signing, bout how she was discovered by one of LA's guys who was on vacay in Barbados then took her straight to his office.
Nas was even offered the Presidency of Atlantic Records before he went to Def Jam but he's an artist not a yes man. After Jay stepped down Nas was offered Def Jam Presidency he still turned it down. Because the position is a puppet show. It's like a political party...the party drafts the policy and the face just enacts and embodies it. Jay was a face.
