Myanmar police defect to anti-government militias as civil war looms - BBC News

  • As Myanmar heads towards a new civil war, the police are coming under intense pressure to decide whether to stay loyal to the military or join the civilian militia, the People’s Defence Force.
    Since the military coup on 1 February, police have been used to brutally suppress mass protests.
    Some protesters have taken up arms to fight back, forming civilian militias called the People’s Defence Force.
    The BBC has been given rare access to the first group of police officers who defected and joined the people’s side.
    Some of those officers even say they’re prepared to use their weapons against their former colleagues.

    It's important to note, 'Myanmar Police Force' isn't the type of police force that we are accustomed to. They are officially part of the Tatmadaw (military)

      Gendarme, carabinieri and marechaussee are 3 police forces that police the public (in addition to military personnel off duty and in warzones) and are in peaceful calm Europe.
      They have similar things in Bulgaria, Romania, Russia, Brazil, and probably many more.

      There are also families being held hostage by the government, forcing the husbands into service. Not all of them, but you can understand why some are hesitant when there's the threat of their wife and daughters being shared for forced prostitution. Myanmar is a failed state & if China steps in they will get egg all over their face, not that they care, but their citizens are realizing how close they're to becoming similar.

      There are financial interests for the Chinese Government and Chinese-owned private entities; The Belt and Road Initiative project includes Myanmar in its planning and is necessary for its success...
      The American Government does not care about ethnicity issues or religious issues in other countries and will only make efforts to change situations when there are economic opportunities and use this method to crush its opponents in economical warfare...

    Its a bit misleading though, 70 officer defecting cannot be equates to whole "police" force defects. Their group is still too small to have any effect on balance of power, but at least they make great counter-propanda material. Who knows, maybe other police of other area also defect (or at least become reluctant, ineffective, poor moraled ally of the military, making a crack in the junta)

      It was always assumed firearms would be used for hunting and protection(they never thought that could be an issue), but the Founding Fathers wanted the citizens to be able to go toe to toe with a threat(foreign or internal)...so yes every country needs it own version, that cant be infringed upon.

      It might sound harsh, but I don't find it horrifying. This has happened in every generation before ours. It is sad, but it is the human condition. Our moral choice, or at least mine since I am away from violence at least for now, is to help those in need around me now, support those fighting for freedom and justice far away, and be ready to face hardship and do the right thing when the time comes

    Anyone who has the guts to stand up and fight against the corruption of the political elite has every ounce of my respect. I wish the people of Myanmar every success and all of the luck in the world. I hope to see this same bravery in England one day - hopefully in my lifetime.

    The people of Myanmar will look in vain for significant international help, certainly not from their ASEAN "friends" who care far more about the Myanmar government than the people. Change in Myanmar will have to come from within. Good luck brothers, it will be a long hard fight.

      I'm kidding of course, but jokes aside, it does tick me off when people in the West look at the problems of the global South and delude themselves into thinking that their own country is immune to that sort of stuff. So many authoritarians have taken power all over the world, including Europe and the US, so saying that we're somehow "blessed" because Myanmar has it somewhat worse is like putting our heads in the sand and ignoring our ongoing problems.

      With the opening of their country to the outside world, Myanmar risks the onslaught of negative unwanted foreign cultures; that it needs to shield and protect itself from, so as to keep much treasured and highly regarded Myanmar tradition, culture and religion.

      Like I said, deposed Suu Kyi government is closer to the West, while the military is closer to China.

      @@rottenrobbie8466 In my humble opinion, the coups in Burma/Myanmar and some others around the world today are totally different from the coups which took place over half a century earlier when newly independent nations, including Burma, just came out of centuries-long Colonialism, bitter and poverty-stricken, turned to a new deal of Social-Democratic system (Socialism/Communism).
      Today's coups, in most cases, are changes in the political system only, while the economic system is mostly left intact.

      Not necessarily...you can be a member of the police and already be protecting your family and the democratic rights of those who have opposing views to those demonstrating in this video......there’s 2 sides to every coin, but don’t worry one day these protests and the plunge into ‘civil war’ will come to the places you and I live in...then and only then will we realise that it’s not as simple as ‘ if you support them you’re evil’ which is what seems to be the case here. 🤷‍♂️
