They also introduced the GS 750 that had five speeds but GS 550 had six I was never that crazy about fifth and six gear. The difference between them. But it does allow you to get up to 140 miles an hour because I did it that next day I'm Great Falls all the way up to glacier national Park lickety flick I was there. 55 minutes from Great Falls.
I have a 1977 one of these with only 9600 mls on the clock. still has the 4 into 2 original exhausts on and they have no rust on them. a very original bike.
The 1977 GS550 was a "B" designator, The side covcer you have there is from a 1978 to 1981 GS550E.
