Not sure if you have a hose bib out there but you could easily run a drip system to all those trees and use much less water and it goes way deeper. Cover with mulch and it will hold the water for a long time. I’m here is California and we’ll go above 100 for most of the summer all the way up to 110-115 and have no prob.

    Dig a round 5’ circle 4” deep
in the center dig a hole for the plant
    Plant the tree like normal
in the 4” space around the tree add mulch, leaves, twigs, sticks, bark, old sweet potato leaves, egg shells, etc….
This way the mulch and all the other fodder will hold dampness for the roots
You may lose limbs and leaves but the trunk should stay damp enough to live
Also, this prevents water run off and keeps the moisture close by roots
Also use other trees plants as a buffer zone… Indian hawthorn for example to protect moisture from escaping ….
Plant peas for summer use in the 4” deep space adjacent to the tree…. They will climb and protect from scorching sun

Try Legg Creek Farm. They have Texas adapted trees and are in East Texas. We will be planting trees from them on our property soon.

I am in the Big Thicket and I also lost my percimons. My orange, pear, and Japanese plum are still going good.
Last summer was HARD, damn near no rain.
I think I will start doing a bunch of Pecan trees on my property. I will have a 7 year wait for the pecans but that's okay. I'll be 58 lol.

@@nikotromus1435I believe it takes 7 years minimum for pecan trees to start producing.

@@nikotromus1435 yes it will take approximately 7 years before they start producing nuts. Which is a bummer. But good things come to those who wait. I will give them much love and atrention until then.

Sorry you've lost so many trees lately. I've lost a few here in NE Texas as well. I planted all my replacement trees in afternoon shade. I've found I have better luck with the dwarf trees and Honey Sweet is also a good choice for me along with the one you mentioned. I've got wild American Persimmon trees out in our pastures. They always seem to make it. The trunks are fenced off from the livestock, but very year I can tell when they are ripe because the goats just camp out under the trees waiting for fruit to fall. Very entertaining watching some of the older goats try to catch a fruit mid air or on the bounce! I haven't tried to make jelly with the wild persimmons as I don't want to disappoint the goats. I know, I'm kind of weird that way. I do have some Jiro Asian Persimmons (2) and they struggled a bit the first two years but this year they took the heat and drought better. I actually had two fruits developing for the first time but one just disappeared. I'm out twice a day checking on the other one. I suspect the Southern Mocking Bird who has been sitting on the fence nearby, singing at me. The cat and I are debating what to do about him 🤔 Good luck with your new trees.

Our peach tree last year put out some good sized fruit, and the deer ate well but since the drought we didn't have any fruit this year. Our tomatoes did pretty good but standing out there in the heat was too much for me to water like i did last year.

Farming is a tough life. Such a shame for the older trees, especially. I look at the way that Phoenix Arizona does their watering - with the flooding system. It is a very fascinating concept. Not so long ago you were dealing with floods. Cut and drop? Could that be a choice to help against the heat? All the best for your Apple trees and the rest of your garden forest.

I had at one time wood chips all around the tree but it all broke down. But yes putting mulch, wood chips or something like that would hold the moisture in and around the tree roots better.

Maybe you over watered your trees. You would be surprised how little a small tree needs to survive. Most times they just go dormant. But over watering will kill them.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  Před 9 měsíci +1

Over watering will definitely kill your fruit trees but I can assure you with the heat and drought we had, that would have been next to impossible.

Sub irrigation? I don't know if that's an option for you but it takes alot off your plate and one could always fertilizer/fertigation via it and put it on a timer... I've seen farmers also add a measure devise that measures soil dampness, not sure if this is overkill for your needs but if one has fruit orchards it's certainly helps alot.
As I understand it your trees should be planted east to west to allow sunlight in between your rows, this allows "row cropping" in between so that bio diversity of vegetables and fruit can be grown together. If you go this route you wouldn't need cover crops if you plant throughout the year, also mycelium if you add it will completely amend and change the entire composition of your clay soil per acre/hectare and being a totally diverse plot will allow you to cut back on watering.
Again not sure on your needs or goals but it will completely free up alot of your time to other areas. These upgrades ALWAYS adds value to your property as an irrigated field sells way more than a field which is not!
