  • Artists NEED to be making fan art. That’s a big statement, but I 100% believe it’s true. In today’s sketchbook session, we’ll be creating a mixed media Kiki’s Delivery Service page and chatting about FAN ART, including my own journey with fan art and why I believe it’s important for artists to be making. Be on the lookout for more Studio Ghibli fan art soon. 😉

That was beautifully said 👌🏻. I do see the importance of fan art because usually to create fan art you must have some kind of bond or tie to the image being created (landscape, portrait, character, etc) therefore you enjoy the process while learning from the study. It’s a win win! Beautiful illustration Allison. Thank you for inspiring us all 🥰🫶🏻💕

I had a similar mindset when I went full time with my art in July 2023, art was now my full time job and I am so lucky to have so many people rooting for me to make it work. So I told myself if I created, it had to be for work. But I recently have changed my mindset here and don't think like that anymore. It was stifling my creativity and was unhealthy. Thankfully I made time for creative things that have nothing to do with work, like coloring in a coloring book. It's purely for fun and I don't even force myself to post it. If I want to share, great, if I don't, then that's ok too.

I COMPLETELY understand. I’m so glad you’ve been able to find a better balance with your work and creativity!! 💛

The picture came out so great. I love the little dots/spots around the broom bristles. 😍
I really needed to hear that last bit. Every single time I talk to my father, he pushes me to sell my art. I took almost 2 decades away from art in part because he pushed me into a bad art school many moons ago. I am only now starting to enjoy art again, and I just want to have fun! I am glad I am an adult and he doesn't have any say in my life any more.

Being a parent of an artist is not easy because ultimately most parents just want the best for their kiddos and making it in the art world is not easy. I'm praying that you will continue finding your art joy again!!

Thank you so much!! I’m so sorry you’ve had some bad experiences with pressure to sell your work. It can be so frustrating, for sure! On the one hand, it can be encouraging when others see monetary value in your work, but on the other hand, that shouldn’t be the main goal. If you aren’t interested in/aren’t comfortable with selling your work, I’d definitely say DON’T!! It’s absolutely okay to keep your work for yourself and simply let it be something you enjoy doing with no financial benefits. Art isn’t about money, it’s about joy. Best of luck to you, friend!! 💛

Making fan art (albeit 10 years ago) was what helped me develop my current art style. I don't do much fan art these days because I have my own OC that I'm constantly drawing but every once in a while I'll make something from a fandom I love that's just for me. The last "fan art" I made was of Black music legends that have passed away (Michael Jackson, Prince, Tupac, Marvin Gaye, and Tina Turner) and I also drew a spread of my kid in his Spider-man (Miles Morales) costume, if that counts LOL. P.S. You get extra points for also loving LoK along with AtLA because I get sick of hearing people hate on it.

Oh my goodness your fan art sounds INCREDIBLE!! I’m sure your kid absolutely loved being drawn as Spider-Man. 💛 LoK and AtLA are definitely some of my favorites! They’re such an incredible example of world building in my opinion. 🥰

I feel this one! I’ve been trying to get my little Etsy shop off the ground and it’s been like 99% of my creative focus lately. My cup was quite empty. I finally dug out my sketchbook and filled a spread with Legend of Zelda fanart and it was the best feeling-drawing for hours just for the fun of it.

I’m so, so sorry you’ve been feeling creatively drained, but I’m so happy you got to enjoy some fan art in your sketchbook!! Legend of Zelda is truly iconic 😍💛

My current fandoms at the moment are Doctor Who, Musical Theater, and Star Wars, LOTR, and Studio Ghibli. I’m into more it’s just if I sit and list all of them I could be here for hours 🤣. My current cosplay concept turned online persona is the thirteenth doctor in Hobbit clothes (nicknamed The Doctor Hobbit)

hey hey! im a big fan and I've listened to enough of your videos to recognize some of the things you struggle with, in myself as well. Such as difficulty concentrating, hyper-fixation on interests, music constantly playing in your brain, etc... you might have ADHD like me. Totally manageable, even without meds, but if you have the ability it'd be a great idea for you to have a chat with a therapist about it! You can even look up videos on here about how to manage your creativity with ADHD. Ive been able to harness my ADHD to help me in my creative process rather than hinder it!

Random question: If you’ve seen both the English and Japanese dubs of Kiki’s Delivery Service, which performance of Jiji do you prefer - Rei Sakuma or Phil Hartman?
