  • We provision our sailboat for 6 months of cruising the Bahamas. All provisioning starts with making a meal plan and finding enough space for all provisions on your sailboat!
We struck a happy balance of provisiong what we need, and what will not expire over the next 6 months. We also invest in new tools (Dometic Freezer & Vacume Sealer) to extend the shelf life of our provisions aboard!
A copy of our provisioning spreadsheet is linked on our blog post 👉www.folsomoceanviews.com/prov...

Want more?! How about a little FAQ
    ❓Why Folsom Ocean Views?!
⚓️Because Folsom is Charles’ last name and it’s a play on the Johnny Cash Lyric "Folsom Prison Blues".
    ❓Why a #Catamaran?
⚓️Jes gets really seasick while #sailing and the upstairs galley really helps when we #travel.
❓You both work full time jobs?
⚓️Yup. Charles has a traditional 9-5 position as the Director of Customer Success and Jes owns her own business doing art commissions for clients. #WorkingandSailing
    ❓Where to Next?
⚓️We are not sure. Part of the fun of this #DigitalNomad #lifesytle is that you can pick your #adventures

Wow, talk about a trooper. I hope you started to feel better soon after you got to the point you posted. The built in fridges must not circulate the air like a residential does. I learned the hard way not to put a bunch of unfrozen meat in our chest freezer all at one time. It is at 10 below zero still once the middle part froze it had started to go bad so I freeze all our meat in the side by side as its does it quick, like a blast freezer, then out to the chest freezer. Problem solved. Somehow I doubt it would work for milk though. Finally, I wish I was good enough to be able to do what you did with the spreadsheet. It is apparently above my pay grade. Again, I hope you feel better. Thank you and be safe. 👍👍

You both post really helpful insight into the necessary provisioning. As someone who has spent much of the last 28 years traveling/working in the Caribbean and further I will watch with interest as you provision in the future. I have found that my diet changes dramatically according to where I am at. I feel the locals live on a different diet, can it be worth changing? First change will be seafood, as a mainstay, much more of it and always fresh or fresh caught. Lime is used everywhere, from seasoning the seafood to sterilizing the salad greens. They do have chicken processing in the Bahamas, but not recommended. I don't even look for beef or pork.
The best advice I would give, is to not judge the Caribbean based on Nassau, just keep sailing and you will find paradise in the most unexpected islands, coves and harbors... and get used to paradise found on the hook.

So in February we are meeting up with Just Catamarans to do a little window shopping, then who knows! Love ya'lls channel, watching some earlier videos now!!! Oh and subbed!!!

Just out of curiosity, now that you’ve been on this boat for over a year we have a few questions. What are your thoughts on the beds on your boat - such as (1) does it bother you to have to crawl into the bed instead of walking around to get in and out? (2) is it easy to make up the bed or do you just not bother?(3) do you have issues with the mattress being located over the engine? (4) and lastly how hard is it to do maintenance on the engines - do you have to pull up the mattress to perform daily maintenance? We are in the process of looking for a boat and while we aren’t looking for a sail boat we are interested in a power cat. Thanks so much for your videos. Keep ‘‘em coming!

    • @FolsomOceanViews
      @FolsomOceanViews  Před 2 lety +2

Such good questions! I will answer in order 👉
1 - I thought it would bother me to have to crawl in, but honestly it doesn’t phase me at all. I suppose if I had knee trouble, it might be annoying, but you can always scoot on your bum?!
2 - It's easy to get the covers straight so your not sleeping in a tornado of covers, but tucking everything in is a task only preformed for visitors.
3 - The engines on our Leopard (40 - 2017) are outside next to the sugar scoops. Under our starboard side cabin are the fuel tanks, and under the Port side is the water maker.
4 - We do have to pull up the mattress to get to the fuel tanks and water heaters. Its annoying, and we typically have one of us hold it out of the way, or just take it fully off so we can work unencumbered. It's not hard to get on and off, so its no trouble if you are going to be working for some time. Getting into the engine bays is shockingly easy. Our friend is 6'4 and was surprised by how much space he had to work down there.
Power Cat's are an amazing way to travel and have some room to spread out!! Good luck on your search 🙌

I hope you two are able to save some cash with the freezer. We found that a pound of ground beef in Nassau was about $9-13. In the Abacos we saw four small Sirloin steaks for something like $289.00. We were utterly shocked. Let us just say that a pound of most meats costs at least 5 dollars more a pound. So if you can take 70 pounds then you will save about 350 dollars. I don't know if you have convertable fridge/freezers, but freezers sure help out. I'm sure one of your drawers is a freezer as well. We kept a regular cooler and froze those blue ice chest blocks for a big cooler for refrigeration. Freeze a couple, and use a couple on rotation. I think for our family of 6 we got about 100 lbs in our boat freezer and the ice chest freezer. 100lbs lasted about two "monthsish," relying heavily on pastas and small amounts of meat in dishes. I hope the wiring to support your freezer isn't a pain$$$...Oh I signed up for Patreon finally.

I remember that It was you that told us to get one last year, and we just couldnt get it done in time before we left. We ran out of meat after 3 months, and the last half of our trip was in the Exumas where the markets had plenty of options. But we would have saved $$$ and time by having the ability to store more on board. Thats the other huge bennifit, having more cold storage means that we will be able to buy more once supplied dwindle, therefore cutting out the need to shop as often. I am BEYOND excited! Thanks for the reccomendation!! And welcome to our pateron! You can see the cost of the freezer on last months finance recap 👍 Thanks so much for the support, we are thrilled that you would donoate!

@@FolsomOceanViews You remembered I suggested it. That makes me feel appreciated, thank you so much. Oh I wanted to say it's not only meats that are good for the freezer. Most cheeses are great too. I noticed on the receipt you showed in the video that a pack of cheese slices was 7 dollars and change. You can get things like that for 1.59 at Aldi's here in the states. We had lots of block cheeses and a flat cheese shredder and we never ran out of shredded cheese. The sad tradeoff is that frozen items usually don't taste quite as good as fresh, but having to find something for a meal can be a big hassel in places with not many options. We planned our meals too, and even took like pastas and vacuum packed portions along with the meat portion written on the package. You can use regular freezer bags with the sealer too. There are lots of videos on here on how to use them instead of the more expensive ones.

Meat and veggies and really all supplies are expensive if you buy the stuff you are used to getting in the states.
The other cruisers can lead you to the right market to get local stuff and local brands. That may help.

    • @FolsomOceanViews
      @FolsomOceanViews  Před 2 lety +1

Yes! 100% want to start doing this and part of the reason is to help with cost/provisions. While the other part is just darn good food and activity! I agree that if you try to go like for like with what you eat in the states, you will likely pay more than you were expecting. Last year, red peppers were at 6.50/lb but green peppers were a normal price! So we just switched our diet to what seemed to be more local fare, and that really did help a ton!

I hate the metric system , I much prefer Imperial!
However , I`m fluent in both . (Does that make me a metro-sexual?)
Here`s a little rhyme to help you out, Charles, "A litre of water`s a pint and three quarters, two and a quarter pounds of jam, weighs about a kilogram"😎
And I didn`t see a column for Pusser`s rum on that spreadsheet, young lady. More effort is required, down and give me twenty!
BZ though Jess, the old cliche about failing to plan is planning to fail, is not actually a cliche after all. Any one who served is familiar with the seven Ps. Prior Preparation and Planning Prevents Piss-Poor Performance and you did plan, you did prepare.
There`ll be things you missed, things you overlooked, of course there will. But you gave it your best effort. From where I`m looking, you did good.
The Bahamas are calling you, wish I was up there meself.
Fair winds, safe travels, and get some rum india ;)
    Take it easy guys xx

Hey Jason! Undoubtedly some stores we found were incredibly well stocked!! But we found that not every store on every island had everything on their shelves.
I’m sure some islands had more options, but we are constrained by not having a car. We can only get to where our feet can take us! We absolutely love the Bahamas and are so excited to visit and learn more about your islands (and your shops) in the coming year!
