- From 1989 to 1990 Rock on Mainstream radio was dying… Boy Bands and sugary pop was taking over… History says that Nirvana came in and saved it… But the truth is that Chris Robinson, who I am interviewing next, and his band The Black Crowes revitalized rock a full 2 years before Nirvana or Pearl Jam. They did it with a B-Side Cover song from the 60s… Hard to Handle was originally sung by Otis Redding. The Crowes hardened it up and the song and their album Shake Your Money Maker reignited rock and roll…AND BLEW AWAY THE WANNABEES setting the stage for grunge ... THE STORY IS NEXT on Professor of Rock.

It's time for another edition of our series Revelation where featured artists reveal rare stories about their biggest songs, along with fascinating insight about their careers… Ya know, many times, a certain band will come onto the scene and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Radio has gotten stale and predictable and everything starts to sound the same and then maybe in your personal life you yourself are going through some changes and that certain band or artist comes at the exact right time and it changes everything. That’s how it was the first time I heard the Black Crowes. it was during a time of great awkwardness in my life. I was a 13-year-old outcast about to start high school and still trying to figure out who I was and where I fit in.
But also, when the Black Crowes released Shake Your Money Maker mainstream music was in a strange place.
Radio in general. The charts were dominated by New Kids On the Block and Vanilla Ice Milli Vanili hadn’t been outed yet and was still doing big business even winning a Grammy even thought they were professional lip synchers overproduced dance music ruled the day and with the 80s ending the 90s was having an identity crisis, as it was still stuck in the 80s but not the good 80s, the bad 80s, it was a strange time for sure, Enter the brothers Robinson.
Chris and Rich, the Black Crowes Shake Your MoneyMaker was exactly what the doctor ordered. A baptism of rock and roll courtesy of the South.
Chris Robinson's voice cut through the doldrums and Rich Robinson’s guitar brought back the feeling of rock and soul and this album renergized music a full year and a half before Nirvana was thought of. It’s the truth that music history seems to skip over.
The album and especially the first single are bonified soul galvanizing and energy enriching. A rock album filled to the brim with rocket fuel. that revived rock and continued to preach its promise in a real and transformational way. Something we could frankly use right now.
The Black Crowes Present: $hake Your Money Maker was released on February 13, 1990, on Def American Recordings. The album was actually named after the classic blues song written by Elmore James and even though the band has covered the song many times it’s not on the album.
Brothers Chris and Rich Robinson had formed Mr. Crowe's - Zábava
Poll: Aliens come to earth & ask you what ROCK music is...What's the first band or song you play for them?
Chuck Berry - Rock and Roll Music
I play them AC/DC Back In Black album
Jimi Hendrix- Third Stone From the Sun. I think they would appreciate it.
It would be the Beatles as they changed everything musically and culturally. The song would have to be Strawberry Fields Forever
The Beatles
Buddy Holly and the Crickets
Elton John
Alice in Chains never gets respect for Man in the Box, every metalhead heard and loved that over a year before Nirvana and Pearl Jam broke.
"Facelift" is a masterpiece.
Alice In Chains - Would. I still listen to it.
@@80s-el9vc Listened to "Get Born Again" driving to work this AM.
I love Alice in Chains.
@@christineml1476 Amen!
I loved “She talked to Angels.” About 15 years ago my son began a heroin addiction ( he’s clean now 4 years at 36 ) but back then that song would make me cry thinking of my beautiful son. It still makes me cry.
Please congratulate him for me 😍 My cousin is 6 years clean and I could not be prouder of her! It is a hard road to walk and it takes great strength to stay on it.
I'm so glad he's sober and you still have your son.
Props to your son for getting clean, not many of us make it out of that nightmare. 7 years clean and counting for me.
"Hair metal is just boy bands with chlamydia" might be one of the funniest things I've ever heard anyone say!!
Right?
Haha, he’s so funny!
These guys never amounted to anything.
I see why Bill Maher invited Chris over. Well, that and we3d.
The Black Crowes were a throwback to the 70's rock scene for me. As much as I loved 80's hair/glam metal bands and as fun as they were. The Black Crowes seemed to put the seriousness back into Rock and Roll. Love their music to this day.
I agree. They hearken back to that sound for sure.
One of the bands that took rock and roll seriously.
Exactly the same! This was the transition we needed from those 80’s hair band types, into the 90’s.
The Crowes were the next iteration of the Stones. I spent the summer of 1990 listening to this CD on repeat
This song always reminded me of the Georgia Satellites.... Keep Your Hands to Yourself. Love them both.
Great stuff!
That’s a great song.
remember that one well , every bar in eastern Kentucky Burnt that one up .
I've always loved that song. I'd sing it all the time when it came out. My mom was in the car with me last year and it came on ,and my mom was laughing and said "I never knew that was a real song! I thought you just made it up!" 😂😂😂 I'm not that cool mom!!
The thing is that song isn't even the best song on their first album. Battleship Chains, Nights of Mystery, and an amazing cover of the Rod Stewart classic Every Picture Tells A Story, are the stand out cuts.
I absolutely WARPED two cassettes back to back, I listened to it CONSTANTLY.
So cool!
Black Crowes were definitely one of the bands that saved Rock And Roll in the 90s!!! Great interview, Chris is the coolest!!!
He’s a nice guy.
seams like he may of calmed down later in life, guess we all have though
good interview uncut last month with the brothers need to finish reading reminded of
Back in the seventies and eighties I often found that i liked the B-Side songs better than what was on the A-Side.
That's how it was back then! What are some of your favorites?
It was true with 70s 45s also, lots of great songs on the b-side.
@@ProfessorofRock Just Got Paid by ZZ Top, Born on the Bayou by CCR, and You Can't Always Get What You Want by the Stones.
Ironically "I Love Rock and Roll" was a "B" side of a tune by a band called "The Arrows."
So the plot thickens on it being a # 1 hit "by" J.J. & The Blackhearts.. 😉🖤🕊
.....GUESSING that ESPECIALLY includes [The] SWEET, Russ (?) "Burning", is SUCH an important MILESTONE sonically.....
I never knew "Hard to Handle" was a cover. The Black Crowes honored Otis' words with their version.
For sure. LEGEND.
I didn’t know Otis sang this either. A soul great for sure.
The Grateful Dead covered it when Pigpen was alive. czcams.com/video/24W9xoJa-q0/video.html
I was aware that it was a cover as I heard the Grateful Dead perform it frequently from 1970 onwards, however I wasn't aware that Otis Redding wrote and performed it originally.
They did a good job with it, didn't stray too far from the masterpiece that was the original.
Jealous Again was criminally underrated.
Agreed!
Absolutely agree. To me it clearly was deserving of being the lead single.
As a songwriter, I've long used the analogy of craft beer to try to explain to folks the importance of getting out and checking musicians who AREN'T the big name, commercial types. Some of the greatest music ever written will never even be heard, because earnest, dedicated, thoughtful and profound musicians are writing it with little concern as to whether it is heard outside of their own heads. Many fine writers are too shy or so lacking-in-ego that they doubt that what they've written is deserving of an audience. We all miss out when they are not encouraged and nurtured a bit. In other words, support your local musicians and artists! Sometimes, they are like diamonds laying along the road that we just drive past every day, thinking it's just broken glass.
Beautiful comment. Thank you very much.
Well said, some of my favorite bands are not well known but play music that touches my soul.
Love the Black Crowes. Hard to Handle was the first time I ever heard them, I love Otis and hearing the Crowes rendition blew me away. I had to buy their album and i have a few in my collection now, if not all, including their latest one ❤
Great comment!
Otis would be proud.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I think he would, yeah
I remember when “Shake Your Moneymaker” came out and I was so excited, finally music that had heart and soul. It gave me hope for music in the future and something I could listen to that wasn’t purely off my playlist from the 60’s & 70’s. I’d come to feel that music was dead and there was no reviving it at that point.
I know EXACTLY what you mean!
Yes! It felt liberating to hear true rock and roll.
Unfortunately music today is way too processed and auto tuned that it's barely able to be considered music.
"Boy bands with chlamydia." Perfect! I'm using that one!
I didn't know it was a cover or B side. I learn something new often on this channel. 😊
I'm so glad! Thanks Catherine!
Never too old to learn.
The one that surprised me was the song, "Tainted Love". I loved Soft Cell's sound on that song, then I heard there was an original from the early 60s that is a soul classic, and it's wonderful!
I'm thinking POR did a story on that years ago, I know I heard the story behind how Soft Cell found the song somewhere, it was most likely from Adam!❤
@LazyIRanch Yes. In the 80s, I thought Tainted Love by Soft Cell was an original. I remember when Adam did that video with both artists.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Amen. That is why I took computer classes. There were typewriters when I was in high school.
I'm _still_ insane over the Black Crowes, and I've been waiting for this episode forever. She Talks to Angels is still near the top of my fave list.
Same!
Who woulda thought a classic-rock style take on Redding would work so well, but it did.
Or flip it around, with Wilson Pickett's soul screaming version of "Hey Jude" with Duane Allman on guitar... I think that one even surprised Wilson Pickett
The first '90s song that was truly classic rock style was Hold My Hand by Hootie and the Blowfish.
@@michaelrue1400 I tend to think of Hootie more as country than rock.
@@fnjesusfreak Only more recently.
In 1989 we still had Tom Petty, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eddie Money, Eric Clapton, Don Henley, Bad English, Aerosmith, Phil Collins, Rush, Stevie Nicks. I know there are others I don't remember. I think the Fixx, Smithereens and even Rod Stuart had hits. People say there was no music in 1989 but there still was. I would need to dig through my tapes, CDs, and records to think of more. Nothing against the Black Crows I listen to them also. I do agree music has taken a big dive, but there was still some good stuff out there, just not on the radio.
I agree with everything you say. I don't remember 1989 as being just boy bands and sugary pop. It's more like that now. I always knew Hard to Handle was a cover, because I'm old enough to remember the original and how shocking it was when Otis Redding was killed. Did you know that Barry Gibb wrote To Love Somebody for Otis, but when he was killed, the Bee Gees recorded it themselves.
Does nobody remember U2 was around keeping it fresh for like 20yrs?
@@cb1004 I forgot many, UB40, Midnight Oil, etc many that had a couple or more songs that sounded ok to some great ones.
I love "She Talks to Angels", it's the first song I think of when I picture The Black Crowes.
It's so good. Do you know what the song is about?
@@ProfessorofRock I read that it's about a goth girl whom lead singer Chris Robinson was acquainted with in Atlanta, who was a drug addict.
It's their ONLY good song.
Me too. Classic.
My favorite from them as well. Both songs are great.
Chris: "Hair metal...boy bands with Chlamydia." 🤣🤣🤣Mic drop right there! Man, I hated Hair metal with a passion. As a kid that grew up on Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and then Metallica and Slayer, the Hair Metal bands were a slap in the face. Poison's "Look What the Cat Dragged In" album cover made me ashamed to be a metal head. I discovered Alternative Rock as a counter. Guess I should thank Poison for opening my eyes to that music.
BTW - I remember clearly when Black Crows came on the scene; it was a much needed shot of 60s/70s revival music. Absolutely they helped to keep rock alive for a few more years...until the inevitable modern day era of overly-produced and spiritually dead corporate pop. RIP Rock - you may be dead on the Pop charts but you live on in millions of GenXer's hearts.
Rock downloads rose last year as hip-hop track downloads declined. 🙏🤞
Hah- my friend Angie brought over Poison's first album one day, and we were like who are these chicks! lol. I liked much the same as you did, plus lots of classic rock, Scorpions, etc. I liked it all- even a FEW hair bands, but as a "thing" it left me cold.
That's just what happens when you commercialize an entire scene- and export it everywhere. In this case, the LA metal scene.
A decade later, they did the same exact thing with the Seattle scene, and kinda fucked IT up, too. So I, too, got into alternative, industrial, Prog rock, etc- and country! (I feel the same way about most modern country as you did about hair metal... WTF???)
@@austintrousdale2397 - let's hope the trend continues!
@@pyroman6000 - I agree with you 100%! Music genres get overpromoted and then burn out. Hair metal, Grunge, Nu-metal - all shared a similar fate.
The last 25 years of Pop music have been atrocious! None of it is memorable or enduring. Think of the great hits of the 60s thru the 90s. No modern music has that staying power anymore. That is the sad state of commercial Pop music now.
I love all of those artists you mentioned- Milli Vanilli, Vanilla Ice, NKOTB... It's all great top 40. The Black Crowes were pretty amazing, because they had a 70's classic rock sound. "She Talks To Angels" is 100% pure awesomeness! "Hard To Handle" rocks. 🎸
Same here, Milli Vanilli sounded good to me so I bought their records and CDs. Some other albums before showed people on the cover who were not the real singers. I like a variety of music including NKOTB, etc.; not all grunge so much but Black Crowes have talent and I played them on rock radio many times.
So good.
I like pop... It was just refreshing. to get BC
I love the Black Crowes because their sound is pretty throwback.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 So true!
I was never more than a casual fan of The Black Crowes, but why they never really got to that level that other American rock bands got to eludes me.
Plus, we can never have too many bands with squabbling brothers. It usually makes for excellent music.
Drugs
I saw the Black Crowes at the Horde festival in ATL in 94. They were the closers since it was their hometown along with Ziggy Marley, Blues Traveler & my first encounter with a new band to me, Wilco. That show along with seeing Pink Floyd that year made me drop out of college & pursue my own musical career. They “took me to church” with a gospel/blues rock that changed my life.
We're you also at the Great Atlanta Pot Festival? It was in Piedmont Park in 1992 and was a blast. People referenced it for years and the reason so many people showed up was because the Black Crowes played.
💯 That is indeed a cool story bro 🤙✌️
Huh, I saw Horde fest in W NY that summer- with a totally different lineup: Big Head Todd and the Monsters; Dave Matthews Band; Blues Traveller; and Allman Brothers headlining. Little Sister (soon to be Sister7 thanks to someone else already using that name, lol); G Love and Special Sauce; Screamin Cheetah Wheelies; and Colonel Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium League on the small stage.
Of them all, I was a HUGE Allmans fan, and liked Blues traveller. Never heard of the rest. Truly a Come to Church moment!
Dave Matthews was a holy shit! What is THIS??? moment. We'd never heard the like- and they blew us away! Fantastic live band! Big Head Todd, and Little Sister were awesome too. To the point that I went to the record store the next day, and bought everything I could find by those three bands! Patrice Pike can SANG!!! Little Sister was a Texas blues/funk band, and right up my alley.
The Allmans were a true bucket list show. MAN they were good that night!
Aquarium League is STILL a bit too eclectic for my taste. G Love was pretty good, too.
@@pyroman6000 I am a huge Allman Brothers fan. I didn’t realize the lineup changed over the tour. I saw the Allman Brothers a little later at the Fox in ATL with a young Derek Trucks they brought out for the second set & Dickie was still with them. Great memories!
You can also make the argument that Guns N’ Roses pulled away from what was considered hair metal to a much deeper and bluesier kind of rock that had no pretensions to be poppy. But I agree with you, the black Crowes had an awesome sound the best song of their career I believe is still “remedy.”
It was all part of how music and culture were evolving. Guns in 87 didn’t slam the door on rock and roll though. And the Black Crowes themselves survived the 90’s by becoming a Dead-like jam band embracing the pot smoking hippie subculture.
They were most definitely not hair metal.
I personally love "Twice As Hard."
Yes I agree with that argument. GnR were not hair metal and were a breath of fresh air for damn sure. Peace
That is what I felt about GnR back then, too.
“This is Spinal Tap” was required watching during my senior English class. He was such a cool teacher.
Who doesn't dig Spïnal Tap? Stonehenge, where a man's a man and the children dance to the pipes of Pan, etc etc.
Love the Black Crowes and this interview. "She Talks To Angels" was my transformative 90s moment. Great episode, Sir Zenni! 😎👍🏻 #RockRevival🎸🎤
THanks!
What a great interview! I am so pleased to hear just how down-to-earth Chris Robinson actually is, given his then-reputation for arrogance. I was ~20 when "Shake your Money Maker" first came out. And, echoing the sentiment conveyed in the Professor's opening, it was "a breath of fresh air" _before_ "Never Mind", and _it's_ revitalization of rock music. Let's not forget that this Black Crows album was contemporaneous with "The Damn Yankees". Hair bands were so passe by that time, I'm sure everyone my age was done with them. I'll always appreciate "Shake Your Money Maker" and the indelible mark it left on my youth. Thank you Chris Robinson for deigning to cover "Hard to Handle", which inspired me to purchase your most excellent album back in a time when people listened to albums sequentially, and graded them as a whole. Thank you Professor of Rock for producing this interview, sharing the memories and giving me that bitter-sweet paang of nostalgia on this Bourbon-soaked Friday night!

Chris said it.........Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Lead Belly, Willie Dixon, Hiwlin wolf to.....Yard Birds, Peter Green's Fleetwoid Mac, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and son on....Theres a lineage to the GREATEST music that has the deepest soul. It's not just something you listen to its something you feel. There's a trick to being creative. When you invest a certain degree of vulnerability into the finished product it gives a glimpse of the artist that forms a connection with anyone who happens along to discover it. Music is truly the universal language.

Brilliant interview……….. this truly rock & roll…………
The Melvins had a huge role in the takeoff of Grunge. They were Kurt Kobain's favorite band. They introduced Kurt to Krist Novoselic, and they loaned Kurt their drummer, Dale Crover, for the first Nirvana demo album. I hear the Melvin's influence in Sound Garden, Alice in chains, Tool, even early White Zombie. How about an expose on the little-known Melvins?
The Black Crows played live in Brisbane (Australia) last year and it was one of the best shows I saw all year. They still have so much energy and soul when they play.

For me - not talking for anyone else - one of the great things about this channel is finding out about music that I enjoyed but never knew much about because I was never in the habit of even thinking about who was playing what. Now to discover that "Hard To Handle" was by the Black Crows, and to hear the guy talk about what's important to him, is putting another piece into the mental mosaic of music. Thanks!

I love this channel. Keep up the great work. Any chance you can make a video around the lemon twigs. A contemporary band but very much in the spirit of classic rock ‘n’ roll.
As I watch more of your videos, I see how very little I knew even as a teenager in the late 70’s, early 80’s about Rock music. I missed out by not paying more attention - Most songs that I know, like Hard to Handle, I certainly heard then but didn’t even know the band’s name (Bay City Rollers, Cliff Richard & others had my attention). Thank you for letting me learn these fun details now & reviving some of my exposure to such great music!
“Wanting and waiting” by the Crowes isn’t just a single for the purpose of carrying an album to justify a nostalgic tour. It’s a damn good time that’s also true to the Robinson brothers’ sound.
I really really really like it when you have an interview with the band members. I think I like it because it shows that the band respects your efforts to bring this music information to us in the most meaningful way.
To me when you don’t have a guest makes me less respectful of the band members for not showing you your props. You are a master of your craft and the smart bands know this, and the ones that take the risk of the interview learn about this during the process.
I’ve been watching these types of shows for over 30 years and you are the best one yet. That’s says a lot cause there’s been a some really great interviewers.
Keep up the great work whether the band shows up or not. We the fans respect you for your dedication and hard work.

That album had a huge impact on me. At the time I didnt know Hard To Handle was an Otis Redding song, I only knew it as a Grateful Dead song. And I love the way Chris and the Crowes have become part of the jam band scene.
We saw the Black Crowes open for Heart back in the day...talk about an incredible pairing!! Great interview, Professor! ❤🎵🎶❤
thank you for this channel, your content is awesome, uplifting and positive
You are so welcome
I love your channel. I also bought my first Zennie eye wear. I love them
Great interview! I saw them in 1990 when they opened for Robert Plant. I didn't know anything about them at the time and I was blown away by their music and stage presence. Awesome concert, and their version of Hard to Handle is on my list of all-time favorite songs.
What a great interview!
Great interview with outstanding insight. I too had no idea this was a cover. So now I am off to go hear Otis's version.
Great interview, Professor! What a personable guy Chris Robinson is. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great album! Thanks for this one.
Great interview, Prof! And yes, This Is Spinal Tap is my favourite movie. 🙂
Fan since I first heard them, sent me on a new journey of discovery into southern soul and southern rock, as I always tracked the favourites if my favourites, figuring if I like the music they make , I’ll like the music they listen to.. excited to see them live in a couple of weeks
Saw The Black Crowes in Seattle two weeks ago on their Happiness Bastards tour. Chris sounds better now in my opinion, and gave Otis shout out and recognition with them singing " Hard To Handle", as well as their other classics, including additions from their new CD. Tip, buy it. It's EXCELLENT!
Same saw them in PHX, so glad I did. SOOO GOOD in concert.
@@joebedard9092 Can't wait to see them again!
Their first two albums in particular are 100% pure rock ‘n roll. They still sound just as good today as the day they were released.
Adam. We are the same age and I can see Casy in your style. 90 was crazy. High-school was a terrifying thought and 90s rock and the crows was the only thing that got me thru. Thank you brother for reminding me that I'm not alone.
Great interview, the Black Crows when they came out was the moment I could say "Rock & dead yet"! And for one brief moment in time it was true but sadly it didn't last.Good Rock was an inferno and now it's barely a flicker, there's just not enough genuine Rockers out there or that are still around to keep it going... 😮💨, LONG LIVE ROCK!
The Black Crowes were my favorite from back in the day I saw them 3 or 4 times in Toronto! Shake your Moneymaker was so awesome! And when the Southern Harmony and Musical Companion Wow!! I must of listened to them hundreds of times! Love me some TBC!❤❤❤
