I lived in San Francisco for 30 years and I NEVER called it San Fran. If you live in the Bay Area you would call it “The City” and if you moved away like I had to do you call it “SF”. San Fran and Cali, yuck!
Definitely. 5th Generation San Franciscan here. I do have to differentiate with people sometimes. When I use the phrase “Bay Area” with people sometimes it doesn’t land. So you end up using San Francisco to get people on the the right geographic location. And it’s still mostly uncouth to call it “Frisco” less you owe the Imperial Treasury the $25 fine. lol 😆
