If only! I wonder how expensive a ticket would be if that could work? Unfortunately, even if a person could fit inside a black box, the S & R would probably just find human pudding inside an intact black box, since they can handle G forces we can't.
The first one, the hard landing at Hong Kong, resulted in 57 injuries and 0 fatalities. Damn good job by the pilots to land that plane safely.
Scary man, what a scary thing to see. Awesome pilots landed it with seconds to spare.
@@dragonk234 I always wonder that in situations like these, do the pilots usually become friends for life after experiencing something so traumatizing/heroic? Surely, there isn't a day that comes where they shake hands and then go their separate ways. I don't know, maybe I'm just a sentimental person like that lol
@@ballaking1000 i wonder that too haha
Scary to think something as simple yet complex as the water absorbing powder getting into a valve can endanger the entire flight and take out the engines.
@@ballaking1000 after watching almost every series of Mayday, I think that’s exactly what’s happens, most pilots who go through stuff like this end up being friends for life, which I’ve always found sweet as it means they have a strong bond and a friend who understands exactly what they went through is they ever need to talk about it

@Shane888 Davies this may be true. But by extending that notion we end up seeing nothing but devils around every corner.
Ah yes. 1 hour of triggering my fear of planes
There is no need to be afraid of flying. Since flying is becoming safer every time
Dont fret, the saying we learn from our mistakes is very true like for example, when there was a mid air collision, the aviation industry implemented the tcas system to prevent any more mid air collisions so it gets safer over the years
The show goes back years to get these crashes. I was afraid to fly but then decided to learn everything I could about commercial aviation, including how planes fly, how their engines work, rudders etc. Now I can't wait to get a window seat where I can watch everything the back of the wing is doing, which lets me know what is going on in the cockpit. 18:11 I felt pretty bad for the Kalitta Air pilots. Their fatigue was caused by the fear of losing their jobs. A previous employee had been fired because he wouldn’t fly fatigued and the pilots knew about that.
Damn that's pretty sad 😔
The Crash of Kalitta Air/American International Airways Flight 808 was the first accident to involve pilot fatigue. Eventually the First Officer and Flight Enginner returned back to flying but Captain didn’t because of his back injuries

With the P-51, if a trim flap broke off it would cause a sudden change in aerodynamics, especially if the trim flaps were adjusted to extremes. One trim flap falling off could cause the plane to roll as well as pitch.
The Mustang had a trim tab riveted in position, that's what fell off, the stabilizer was too small to counteract. Also the stick force was beyond most human's ability.
These are so addicting.

I know that statically I've got a much greater chance of being struck by lightning than on a plane... After compulsively watching this stuff for days, I sure feel like it's certain death the next time I hop a flight though 🤦🏽♂️

Mortality rates are the key, folk say you've more chance of being in a car crash which is true, you've more chance of walking from a cr crash than any plane crash though.

@Dee....well, lightning or crash, either way, it'll be quick!😎
The scariest part about flying- when u realize how actually far from the ground u are.
Flying= the safest way of travel ever until your plane receive some error. Then can easily turn into the nightmare
Statistically, it's not safer to fly. Obviously, your chances of dying in a car accident is greater because you drive wY more than you fly. However, you are more likely to survive a car accident over a plane crash.
Nah the scarier part is that you have no control over any situation that occurs
And that's why my feet stay on the ground and on land
These video compilations are either "this was the main cause of the accident. What has led to this point? On to the next crash" or "both the plane and the crew were qualified, and the likely cause for the accident has just been ruled out. On to the next crash."

I'm sure removing the weapon systems on the P51 also effect the speed heavily. The P51 originally had 6 m2 50 caliber browning machineguns. Each one weighing atleast 100 pounds with their mounts, probably more. I can only imagine how the loss of 300 to 400 pounds of weight per wing would effect the harmonics of the airfoil.
It's probably not that much of an issue. There have been lots of privately owned P-51's that fly just fine without guns. And if it were, it would be easy enough to add weight to the wings.
That aircraft had flown before. Pretty sure something broke
Yeah, I didn't think so. If anything it would perform better.
The trim tab broke causing the plane to veer upwards at 17gs incapacitating the pilot. He blacked out and fell forward on the stick sending the inverted plane straight into the VIP seating section
@@CreepinCreeper01 Yes, I know the trim tab broke. But the trim tag broke because it was not reinforced to handle the higher speeds he was pushing. He was pushing this P51 faster than the Me262 fighter jets could fly

Several of these are cropped too tightly, cutting off the actual cause of the crash. VERY frustrating!
It’s because each actual crash = 1 full 45 minute episode and this entire video for and entire season is only an hour
That is the whole point, given this is a teaser channel to get you to subscribe and watch the documentaries for each, nothing in life is free unless you are greedy and cheat.

Hey y’all, if this is making you scared to fly, it’s about 1 in 5 million of crashing, and if you’re gonna crash? It’s a 1 in 11 million chance of actually dying. Flying is the safest way to travel. The only reason it’s so widespread when crashes do happen is because it’s so rare.

One crucial mistake in these reenactments: They completely forget to contact ATC.
Ok just when I want to know what really happened the story changes! so frustrating that you didn't include the final report in the edit of some of these episodes...
Oh honey. Just watch the individual episodes versus compilation videos. They go in depth about all that information over there.
Thanks for the video!
Saw this episode at least three times. Awesome event.
Damn, I need to see the full episodes now
A big thank you for whoever took the time to edit together just the facts of all the air disasters for this season of AD. No trudging through the re-enactments and repetitions of the facts. Now do this for all the 12 seasons before this one!!! ;-)
Very good video. Subscribed!
I love the reenactor for Clint Crookshanks - they just have the most similar vibes across the board of recurring roles.
They are always hitting us with that, *"statistically speaking flying is one of the safest forms of transportation and percentage wise has far less fatalities in comparison to automobiles."*
What they don't tell us is, there are far more cars on the road than planes in the sky.
The numbers are the reason automobile accidents happen more frequently, even with that said a single car accident may only result at a minimum of 1 person injured or a casualty.
Whereas airliners have the potential to take out hundreds of passengers in one single event.
If the number of passengers and planes in active service equated to the same number of drivers and cars on the road we'd have an epidemic of death on a massive scale.
If you think about it, this show is like in its 15th season with an average of 10 episodes a season and does not appear to be slowing down due to a lack of material.
If you ask me, the shows longevity and success points out a freighting reality and I still can't seem to get enough. 😀
So true. Yet I love traveling 🤦♀️
But ya don't need to fly . Sure aren't taking plane to Walmart or grocery store on a daily basis .
80% of fatal aircraft accidents happen before the year 2001, I think you shouldn't try to be all smart when you don't even know basic statistics or aviation.
I'm enjoying these re-creations and the compelling way the stories are told. A big omission, I feel, with the Reno Air Races crash in 2011, is that you talk about the "disaster" but don't tell us how many deaths and serious injuries were caused, as follows: pilot James K. "Jimmy" Leeward, and ten people on the ground were killed and 69 more on the ground injured.
Yeah they do that on purpose. That way you'll be curious enough to purchase an episode. Smithsonian don't play around with those copy right strikes so you won't find many air disasters on CZcams. Alas there is a channel who has uploaded every episode of may day disasters and you can watch them for free. In the actual 60 minute episode they did go into detail about that so I assumed they just omitted it for time versus not addressing it in the compilation. Hard trying to summarize a hour episodes in 5 minutes.
Its a bit annoying that we dont get to find out the cause of the accidents as you just go straight to the next video when their about to solve it.
I just love smithsonian channel videos

All these episodes are distressing but its addictive as well...
crazy how i got this recommended to watch the day before i travel
NIce that it started with a non -lethal crash :)
To describe the aircraft that crashed as a P-51 Mustang was inaccurate, the modifications probably had less than 10% of original build aircraft left, to try and push its top speed to 500 mph would not be very good for the 70 years old components, they probably would have gone way way beyond their original expected lifespan, whilst the warbirds look spectacular and sound even better I don’t think I would ever want to fly one, you just can’t ask a vintage aircraft to be as strong as it was when new.
The galloping ghost was about to break a world record😞

Great videos Smithsonian. Thanks for sharing.
The pilot of the Reno Air races crash didnt witness his death. His plane pulled up so sharply that it must have caused him to pass out instantly due to G-Forces. Or so I read, Somewhere.

SO IT ISNT JUST ME
Love the way the video changes to another story without telling you first... LOL
Before they answer I’m going to say the extra weight shifted when the plane elevated to the back, making it pitch up putting more power only hurt it.
All planes should have small markings in their structure, like a jig saw puzzle, that show where the part fit! Then when there is a crash it would be possible to get most of the plane put back together. At least a lot easier if possible. It can be done with any metal marker that simply rolls around the plane leaving minute numbers.
crashes happen so rarely that nonone would want to pay for this feature.
@@alexanderw.648fax but general aviation crashes are a lot more regular (still quite rare tho)
For the first incident of the video, ik for any air craft you need power to land in case the plane stalls and slams too hard onto the ground. But couldn’t they shut off the over powered engine and use engine two as their main, despite the recent malfunction? Realistically speaking it’s not the worst idea but it’s better than landing with an engine at 74% thrust.
They couldn't. The cause of the engine troubles was a fuel contaminant: a desiccant (something to absorb water, like in those sachets of beads that are in everything these days) got into the fuel supply and then jammed up the fuel flow control valve so it couldn't move. Once those are jammed up, you have zero control over the throttle. So while Engine 1 was stuck at full thrust, Engine 2 was stuck at idle because the pilot reduced thrust before the fuel valve got completely jammed.
Kudos to the Pilot ! Nice Work Indeed !!
With the second crash with the p-51's sound effects are wrong. The sound effect used is from the Ju 87D "Stuka" Diver.
being a pilot is like....holding your life and all the passingers life then just some guy who controls a plane. rip those pilot who died in crash😥
I love the Smithsonian institution and all.. and if I was sitting here and fully paying attention to the episode,I imagine it'd be great!. But as I am use to full episodes on one crash, and try to do things around the 🏠,I come back and what what happened to the first plane ,or three other ones that I was waiting for them to do a full investigation, and then do an explanation for us . So I'm thinking they are gonna circle around to the modified race plane...then they just keep coming up with new crashes...wow! Now I need to rewatch this when I have nothing else to do...if I want to know ,that is.🙄🙂👍
Guess what I can fully pay attention and still get other stuff done... And so there isn't supposed be this gel in the fuel, and they don't know how it got out of the transfer pumps filter. Stop...alright that's what I figured,so now let's move on to the modified race fighter ...and of course it was modified..., In a hanger they go to see why some other plane crashed... Oh wait it's not me ,I'm not the one suffering from ADHD !it's this show.
And again they leave one for another...I guess this episode is just the previews for the full episodes?!
So after rewatching the whole thing and rewinding where they seem to just jump ahead to another crash...it's not me,it's the show,it doesn't actually solve any of these, maybe just the one where the pilots weren't trained properly to land in that tight space. Or was it the other one.?.. don't know . Scratching my head, it's just that I'm used to having the accident not only solved ,but for them to fix what went wrong, for it never to happen again.
the video is just plane crashes not why they happened
@@Barry.B.Benson i guess i just assumed they would do an investigation... i guess I'm wrong to have done so.... thanks for pointing that out. Cheers!

i was taught that 98% of all air crashes are due to human error, i think that's used as a sales pitch. When something breaks on the aircraft, are the reports stating "the pilot missed a rusty washer on pre-flight, chalk it up to human error" 😂😂😂
mm unfortunate for them(company) to not be held liable and resulting in bankruptcy. blame it on the pilot, meanwhile plane mechanic engineers who also don't spot it, are clear of blame
Well that's not entirely wrong. If that rusty bolt was something on the preflight check and the manufacturer and airlines made it clear that if that bolt is rusty then they need to not take off. It's only the airline or manufacturer's fault if that bolt has a known failure rate and is supposed to be replaced regularly and the airline chooses to ignore replacing it regardless of the flight crew inspections.

12:39 idk if they've found the cause of the crash eventually, but at those speeds a subsonic pressure wave can form on the wing surfaces, it can move towards the back end of the wing, and if it ends up on the elevators this kind of accidents can happen. not sure it was that but it sounded plausible to me.
