Easily Make House Drums On Any Drum Machine With These Techniques

- Today I’m going to take you through my easy workflow of making House drums on “any sampler or drum machine” and I’ll show this by doing it on 3 different machines with different limitations. We'll be using the PO-12 (Pocket Operator Rhythm) 1010Music Blackbox, and the Elektron Digitakt. I’ll create 3 different patterns in total and hopefully spark up some ideas that you can apply to your drums, all of this is doable in software too by the way so have at it!…
Not only does this make great practice but it's also a way to productively procrastinate by setting the bar lower to getting something done creatively, while making something you can use later! A lot of my best tracks started this way…

Speaking for the collective here…
We love the way your mind works.
Much appreciation for the way you share the creative process.
Gracias Ricky!
I've got to be honest. When I saw the video length I was like; "how is it gonna take 40mins!?" - then here I am, been on a journey but enjoyed every second. The way that last digitakt beat evolved into such a banger had me hooked.
Need you start calling you the post man, you always deliver!
haha! Thanks for hanging through to the end! I really appreciate the support and the new name
For the hihat choke group thing, on an Elektron sequencer I like to put both open and closed on one track, and set one of them to the trig condition 'not fill'. So then the fill button mutes one of them, and the mute button mutes both of them. The other advantage of this technique is that if you mute the closed hat with fill, then the open hat is no longer choked and rings out! If you do prefer to work on two separate tracks, you can also use the 'not nei' trig condition for a similar effect.
ah yes I always forget about the neighbor trigs! The fill one is a good one to know too. Thanks for the information!
This fill trig is such an amazing idea, I’ve always felt rough dedicating a whole track to open hats. Using the full condition makes it so much more jammable whilst freeing up a track.
Fantastic video overall, but the Elektron segment is why I love Ricky so much. Just watching him get lost in the sauce and start vibing to the beats he makes for these videos is so much fun.
Just picked myself up a Digitakt as my first drum machine! These vids are super helpful, so thank you
Nice… it’s a great product.
Enjoy! Now it has slicing capabilities, load it with sample chains of kits and it becomes the best drum machine in the world in my humble opinion.
Àgree with that.... You don't achieve perfection when you can't add anything else, but when you can't take anything else away.
Keep going that way, Thx!
Thanks for showing the Blackbox goodness!
Awesome - more Blackbox content please :)
preach.
More content like this pls, love these workflow tips!
I always learn something from you. This was a fantastic lesson, thank you!
Always nice to watch you tweak Digitakt. You the real house machine :)
As always super cinematic nice shots - I like straight after the visualization of the po kick waveforms … always always great videos from you!!!
This video (and your whole channel) is a complete gem for all music making, thank you so much! Keep it going!
Thank you Ricky! This is a gem of a video. Love the cooking up house tutorials on Digitakt!!
So useful. I thought I knew a lot of this already, but there's a ton of stuff in this I'd not thought of. Nice one Ricky, thank you. And that Digitakt beat is dope.
having spent all day banging my head against a brick wall for inspiration, this is like a breath of fresh air
Thank you. Loving this content 🥰🥰🥰
Really enjoyed this one!
This video is a must seen for every house music producer. Full of tips and knowledge! Thanks a lot for sharing it!
Enjoyed every second of this video - thanks for sharing your creational process! 😊
I really appreciate the way you teach these concepts. You speak practically about when and where you might use a particular technique and i don't see this being done as much. Like the shaker or tamb reinforcing the kick when it's taken out. Stuff like this really helps level up some of the sections in a song that can be a bit overlooked. Really appreciate what you do.
Shoutout from the D! Detroit Modular is a great shop for those visiting to check out
Love this! Really helpful and most cool.
Very informative as in music creation in a whole, love it
Thanks so much for this!
“I’m gonna down shift, take it slow and just lay it all out there” - Then proceeds to go at Tinez speed to the point that the digitak couldn’t keep up. I’d hate to see you go faster. My mind would explode. Love the vid. Now need to watch the digitak one at 0.25 speed about 15 times. Loving these types of videos. You explain the history and reasoning behind the beats which, for us non djs, is freaking awesome
It's been long time since I had being completely absorbed, tapping my feet, smiling and feeling like I was there with you. It was top notch. A Masterclass... thanks!
Conical, I appreciate you and thanks for hanging out!
Knowledge is POWER!❤❤❤ Adopted the polyrhythmic stuff on the digitakt. Thanks man
hell yes!
Nice. Picked up some great tips there, both for rhythm creation and Digitakt programming. Thanks!
Ricky strikes gold at 29:10 and mines the seam for a truly fantastic loop. Magical!
this was a great one, THANK YOU!
Detroit in da House! Whatup doe!
Maaaaan, I'm usually not excited about snare lines, but I started making the *stank* face around 26:00. Thanks for the impromptu masterclass! This is right on time!
This man is just giving away free game. So much sauce in this video. Big ups Ricky, hurry up and come to London
Awesome episode, sorta "back to the basics" in a way, I seem to remember you doing more of these kinds of things earlier on? Do more again down the line! Love the "how to" vibe and of course: awesome beats! 😀
yea, I know we've gotten far on the channel, and I want to make sure some folks can get up to speed :) We're just trying to have a good time and jam right? Thanks for sticking around long enough to notice :)
Man, this is magic Ricky! Between guys like you and VoltageCtrlr (aka Shiro) I’m just learning how to get so much outta my gear man. Elektron is life!
Nice video brother!!! Super inspiring for sure! 👍🏾
Working on a Elektron is not for me, but BOY! do I love watching you rOcK that box!! So inspiring!
I needed this one right here! Thanks man!
yezzir! Thanks for the support homie
The blackbox is so powerful. Damn. I got one. YES.
Didn't know about the PO-12 ratchet. Thanks!
Nice one Mr T.
Real House lesson here, you rocks!
This was dope 👏👏👏
Man that beat with those chords on digitakt slaaaaaps! Perfect example of less is more. Can groove to that all night long brother
oh the Deckard's Dream chords, man. Lovely pack. Had way too much fun with it 🥰
Thanks for the tips and inspiration!
Pure sound
Thanks for the tips. Your vids are super informative and inspirational. Had the ugly face on when the chords hit! Stone groove!
Awesome. We need more beat breakdowns
Thanks!
Paul thanks so much for the support!
Man this SRR-Ride is the sound of the decade
Yeah man. That was taaaaaaasty.
O man I'm gonna enjoy this one.
Thanks for tuning in Dekkie!
As always, nice process/thinking + tips video! Keep up the good work! btw - what's up wit your function key?
Ricky, you are like synth bob ross. I always enjoy the videos. Also people compliment the press record hat every time I wear it
Yes! Shout out to Detroit house. I am in the D. Getting ready for the annual Movement Festival here at the end of the month to showcase Detroit techno and Detroit house!!
Hell yes! So jealous, it's my favorite festival. Mainly all the after parties too haha!
i have a difficult relationship with rides as i find them overpowering but that pitch drop did the trick!
That digitakt groove is heavy
Ayyyyyeeee shout out to you Ricky! Hope you are coming to the city for movement this year! 6:47
yesss
Ricky please do a video on your sound selection process!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🤌🏽
Great tute and love the monkey house analogy! 😅
Picked up a Circuit rhythm and would like to see House Drums tutorial on it.
Ricky: swing is very important
Me and my Volca Beats: aww :(
😅
Where can I get good house samples from? Are there free samples in the internet or does it always cost something?
Great video. I love it
We love u in Detroit Ricky
That tamborine!!
Bless for the Tamborine tip! Have struggled generally with the weight / vibe of the track coming-and-going too drastically when muting elements. Much awesomeness :)
shoutout detroit ricky
Would love more name dropping of who inspires you… maybe specific albums or tracks… I’m always down for checking out music I don’t know. Would love Detroit House recommends…
Andrés, Moodymann, Theo Parrish, Rick Wade
Also Marcellus Pittman!
@@emiliogomez8443 thx..l will listen!
@@thawkil thx!
Hey from Detroit!
Much Love!
36:48 “Whoa. Easy there, partner.” 😅
I saw you using audio cable to record, is it better for volume? I find myself better via usb because I can record all the tracks at the same time without muting anything but the volume is really low. In case I would do a set do you suggest to use the the audio cable to have a correct volume?
This the type a beat that'll make you convulse on the dancefloor 😂
Nice, can you show it on popular platforms like MPC and Maschine as well?
i second this!
Drums sounds on the Digitakt all comes from the factory onboard?
Waddup doe!
I’m using a Roland V Drums TD 30 module as my only drums sound and percussion source. Just because I used to be a drummer years ago and now I’m producing House music and use the module just for studio recording. It has on board many 808/909 sounds and nice percussions like shakers, etc. Do you have any experience with that? Am I missing something from not having a TR8s or other more EDM focused drum machines?
I don't think you're missing out if you can tweak sounds. I still sample my Roland SPD-8 and occasionally use it to play in MIDI parts. It's all about your ears and sense of rhythm really.
Nice shout out to the D Whaddupdoe!?
I was literally gonna say while watching this stop adding! Ha ha.. It´s hard to stop adding I´m definitely guilty of that also. Yes less is often more.
First I thought making HOUSE music was cheating and simple but...nahhh. The DETAILS in the Drums gotta move you.
If it sounds good it sounds good no matter the complexity. No such thing as cheating in art
White function button on the Digitakt? Did you wear down the orange one?
nah, just saw this one at the office haha. swiped it!
V E L O C I T Y
Did u go see Theo Parrish in LA recently?
❤
so when is the Ricky vid coming on the new Heat +FX
🎉
😊
Yo bro, how come you didn’t go to Superbooth? 🎉
Too much moolah missing from my wallet haha
You have no idea of how good the screen looks after you remove the protective film. Cheers
Now I want a t-shirt that says, "Go stare at a bird...".
DT looks like more powerful but many times get into problem that something sounds weird because of many trigs & sound mutations applied & I can’t fix it. Helps just cleaning everything in track 😞 That’s why I prefer more understandable, predictable& way more simple blackbox workflow 🤷♂️
can u make apartment drums
🤣😂🤣
Nice but I wouldn't put all those open hats on a house track any more
Dogs and cats??
Boots and cats!!
Polyend Tracker? 😢
The swing is always where I get lost - I use a SP404 and I just max out swing without knowing how its affecting my drums
Most metronomes don’t swing so you can gauge against that. I have the 404, but can’t remember if that is true there. Usually I stick to 55 to 60… but am sure we are all different
You don't hear a difference? If you max swing on your drums the rhythm should change, try listening with hi hats no swing and then max swing. It will loosen it up, can even make it almost off beat from just the straight robotics of no swing on these sequencers.
Tho a PO isn't the best example to try this on, if you had a higher quality groove box where you can set individual swing per instrument track it might stick it more.
It took me a while to understand it too. All swing does is makes the second and fourth hits early or late (in a 4 step pattern). So it's a form of microtiming. It's often displayed as a percentage, in that no swing = 50% (because without swing the second and fourth hits would be exactly halfway between the first and third hits, if you were using a stopwatch to time them)
Groove masterclass w Ricky
"go stare at a bird" 💀
whatupdoe!
That first beat sounds more Chicago to me , more s jackin style .
