    I've watched a lot of these videos and always noticed the camera turn away when it looked like cars were going to be swallowed up. What dignity those who were filming had for those they knew would be lost. I understand exactly what the man was saying at 17:24. This was tragic enough without seeing people washed away, most likely to their demise.

    Tendenko doesn't mean save yourself only, it requires everyone to save their own life for the benefit of everyone else's, regardless of age, status, or relationship. I am so happy that the students were well-informed of this ideology and placed themselves in better grounds to not make their families worry, truly a miracle indeed.

    This is a fascinating insight into how this lovely family survived the cataclysmic tsunami that gave them virtually no time to escape!

    One reason I am fascinated by Japan is what a country of extreme contrast it can be. Climates, fashion, and morals/values can be very juxtaposed. It is a very collectivist culture, that focuses as everyone working together to be one flawless effective societal machine. And yet they will have values like Tendenko, which is the extreme of individualism. It's intriguing to no end. And right after, they go back to a perfect collectivist society where no one loots and everyone works together. Amazing

    It's easy to shame the woman for leaving grandpa, saying that if you were in that situation, you would stay. But you don't know what you would do in that situation. She tried to save grandpa, but soon learned she couldn't. Does she commit suicide by staying, killing both her and grandpa or does she save her own life at the expense of grandpa. The spirit of tendenko is to reduce the number of deaths. She didn't know men were coming to help grandpa, but thank God they did. Do you think grandpa holds a grudge? Maybe, because he was taught to preserve family over everything, but who's to say anyone would have helped him had she not let go? The point is: the entire family survived and the only reason is because the kids knew to run, the parents knew to run, and mom brought Grandpa to where he could be seen and helped as much as she could. It isn't a philosophy without compassion. If you are in a position to help, you help. But if you cannot help, you have to save yourself.
    Think of being on an airplane: you need to secure your own oxygen mask before you can help others. She could not save the pair of them, but she could save herself. The men who ran up behind grandpa COULD save him and themselves. This is why he survived. THAT is the spirit of tendenko. Save as many lives as possible. Know when you have to save yourself.

She left her grandfather only when she lost her nerve and decided time would only save herself - she left him only then to fend for himself. Then as fate had it several people took over the duty and together (at a lower cost to their own safety but still some cost) were able to drag him - as he said - to high enough ground. That could have been me in any of this families places and re-enacting it that many times in how many of those replays would I have had the sense to act for myself sufficient to speak of it again.

I think the Japanese people should make a TV series for the Western people to increase awareness of the danger of Tsunami and also how amazing people are the Japanese. How they function so wonderful together, help each other. I saw about 100 videos about the Tsunami in Japan 🇯🇵😳 11/03/11 awful day in Japan. I try to stop watching it but I can't because I identify with the Amazing Japanese people. That's why I can't stop watching them, especially how they fight to save each other lives. How much solidarity they have with each other. But I think there should be a Japanese film director who with the help of the Japanese government should make a TV series about the Japanese Tsunami. I think a lot of people all over the world will be interested in watching the series and learn so much from Japanese people. Another possibility can be Documentary series on TV. Especially it is important to mention the awful tragedy 😢 that happened in the Okawa Elementary school that over 74 children and 10 teachers died in the Tsunami😢😢. It is very important to make this story accessible for people all over the 🌎 Word. Efrat. Israel 🇮🇱

    A very interesting Philosophy for emergency situations like they experienced...Tendenko should be taught here, in the states, to children and adults in areas prone to catastrophe. it can seem heartless to Americans to not save your relatives or friends but; It's a practical solution to a difficult problem. Thanks for the upload.

    • @cn8299
      @cn8299 Před 4 lety +24

      That's not what tendenko is about. Say you were away at work 10-15 minutes away and you had someone watching her. When a tsunami strikes tendenko teaches that YOU should run and whoever is watching your daughter needs to run as well (with the child) as soon as possible, immediately really. I can see this scenario being played out in America where Tendenko isn't a thing. Babysitters instead of running, calling the child's parents and just waiting for them to return instead of running and then you all end up dying in the process. Parents rushing to schools to pick up their kids and kids just waiting around just means waiting for death.

    • @jamesporter6288
      @jamesporter6288 Před 4 lety +1

      @@cn8299 when you put it that way it does make much more sense. I would probably still die trying to get to her, I'd do what ever it took to find her. I know it sounds very stupid but I just couldn't imagine being in the middle of an apocalyptic scenario like this without knowing where my daughter was. I think you're right in that it's a cultural thing where Japanese people are probably taught tendenko from childhood so it becomes second nature. It's almost the complete opposite here in the states.

      @sherryillk Před 3 lety +2

      James Porter Not only stupid but also potentially selfish. If you put yourself in danger, then you also risk the lives of the first responders who would be obligated in rescuing you from a perfectly avoidable situation. Also, by recklessly putting your life in danger, if anything happened to you and the person watching your child did as they were supposed to do and got them to safety, you would be saddling them with the guilt of your death for the rest of their lives not to mention depriving them of a parent. There is a reason why they tell you to put on the masks on yourself on planes before securing your child’s. You’re no good to your child dead.

That's why they are cutting all possible corners, even in their high-speed railway which is supposed to be the Party's pride. Saving face is not their top priority now, making money is. Yet the central govt is still suffocating the media with iron fist measures (like Ai Wei-Wei's case). This makes China hopeless.
