The key is to calculate the TOTAL cost of ownership. The monthly payment and fuel costs arent the only variables. I am a numbers guy so I definitely wanted to know what I was jumping into with a Tesla. My savings on electricity vs. gas would've been about $130/month based on current gas prices in NY and miles driven. Even with home charger installation, this would have been an awesome savings, considering an even higher monthly car payment, BUT, my insurance quote tripled from my 2020 Jeep to a 2023 Model 3. $55 to $149 per month for was a little too high to compensate for the additional monthly car payment. Basically, DO NOT ignore the cost of insurance when moving to electric because they are more expensive to repair and insurance companies do consider that. You may end up with no savings or it may even cost you more.
You shouldn’t have that GEICO 15/30 policy. If you get in a car crash, you’ll need to pay the difference if the other side does not want to settle for policy limits. Then they will go after your assets.
I was spending over $600/month in gas before I got my Tesla and charged for free at work. I started saving money per month immediately after driving the Tesla. Now that I’m working from home, not saving so much anymore 😅

That's crazy! My car gets about 30mpg, so $600 would get me about 6,000 miles with gas prices in my area.
The average time to trade in a new car is 6 years. Sure, some people hold onto a car for 10-15 years, but a large number of people trade in within 3 years. While cost of vehicle ownership is important, there are factors equally important such as safety improvements, reliability, and technology. Everyone’s value system is different and we should respect that. But to me, cost is the least important. There is far too much focus on cost.
I want to survive an accident, not break down on a road trip, and enjoy the latest high tech. If that costs me $100 more a month, I’ll simply have to work smarter to earn enough money.

@@chavale2Model Y weighs less than a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is similar in size. All of the SUVs in that size range weigh 4-5000 pounds.
California does charge you for an electric vehicle, but that road use tax is a flat $100 per year at present. The rest of your registration fee is based on 0.65% of the purchase price/future value. The registration will then decrease with its value. Therefore a new gas powered vehicle of the exact same price will have the same registration fee minus the $100 for the electric vehicle. That makes the registration fee playing field much more comparable than a comparison to an older fully depreciated car.
Having said that we love our 2022 model X so much, we just traded our other car, a 2018 Lexus RX, in for a brand new 2023 model Y LR thanks to the $7,500 credit for buying before December 31. I will now cancel that Lucid Air Touring order I have as our Tesla experience has been so wonderful we decided to be a two Tesla family.
We have a 2021 VW ID.4 and just added 2022 Tesla Model 3. I also live in CA and you're correct on the cost of insurance and registration fees. Owning a Tesla (any model) can be really expensive. We're not in it necessarily for the cost savings or the environment tho. We bought our EVs because we love the high tech and the convenience of "fueling up" from home. Great video...

Yes and no. We had to apply for grants and rebates that offset the cost of home charging equipment and it’s installation.
Great video. Comparing to an ancient car might be apples to oranges . Better worth comparing an equivalent ICE car 2022 model like a 3 series. Also what is the price for all the safety features? I always emphasize what is the price of your family’s safety when someone starts nickel and diming on price.
Here in Mich, the registration fee is WAY cheaper, only like $150 with the avg gas car being $96 ($8/mo for gas, $13/mo for ev). Insurance is about the same, $110/mo. Charging rates are about half, $0.16/kWh. So in the end its WAY cheaper to operate and own an EV in Michigan, but don't have the double $7,500 tax credits that Cali does to effectively buy an EV at 50% off if getting a $30-40k one.

You are correct hard to compare. I have a 2022 Y Performance took delivery in February. The car I sold was a 2017 Infiniti QX80. Loved that SUV but only took Premium Gas and got about 17 miles per gallon. The price of my Tesla was about the same for the Infiniti. I am definitely seeing a big cost savings. 10 months with my Tesla and I have just shy of 25K miles on her.

@@Supraboyes OP is comparing SUV / crossovers. We can reasonably infer he needed these vehicles for the additional space they offer - otherwise he wouldn't have bought these more expensive vehicles.
So, oh wise one, please do tell me where tf you are finding 60mpg SUVs. Last I checked, you're lucky to get 50 or 55mpg in real-world driving, on a compact hybrid. And it's totally non-constructive to tell someone who needs an SUV, to buy a prius purely because you believe in inflated MPG numbers.

$500 is pretty good for my state- NE- new my car was like $800 a year to register, now 5 years old it’s about $500 per year.
Another consideration would be energy cost of running sentry mode. In my experience it depletes battery equivalent to 15-20 miles per day. Not huge costs but still adds up especially if your electricity price is much higher. For me it’s around 0.60-0.70$ per day at 0.11$/kw.
But that sentry mode is one of a kind security system which is second to none. Why buy a $60K car if you end up counting the pennies you lose due to sentry mode?? I assume people don't care about that since they can afford it

We are looking at Tesla to replace our car. Combined between our truck and car we drove around 45k miles last year. The truck average is around 22 and the car is around 26 mpg average. A Tesla would save us massively, I will say about 8k of the miles on the truck is with towing a trailer so mpg goes way down. We would end up not using the truck unless it was for the trailer or for heavy or large items. So we would cut a lot of gas out for our driving.
Like many of already said, it’s apples to oranges when it comes to the comparison. A better comparison would be either an entry-level luxury car, or maybe a BMW three series, where you have to use higher grade gasoline and prices will be definitely higher on the variable side or intangible side is of charging at home instead of having to go to the gas station is very high on my list

When I ran the numbers it would take driving a GAZILLION miles a year to offset the cost difference for the EV. So the reality is we just have to admit that it doesn't make financial sense unless we are driving A LOT. There is nothing wrong with just saying that we WANT ONE! LOL
Nice to see someone tell it like it is. Most don't want to run the numbers and admit that it doesn't make a strong financial argument today to do it. However you make a great point we don't know what the future may hold. We don't know what gas prices will do, or what electric utility rates will do. Good video.
You keep focusing on cost. What about safety? tech? Comfort? aesthetics? Specs like speed etc.? If everyone thinks like you then all people would just buy a Honda Jazz because it's more economical obviously. If you are an economical person then even buying a car is not economical if you think about it since you always lose money when. Buying one due to gas cost, insurance and depreciation. Best to just walk or buy a bicycle.
Also Tesla are prioritized as more of a performance high tech cars not a budget car where people on government assisted income can afford to buy
@@samjam6989 Consumers focus on cost. It's pretty simple. If you have the means to not worry about cost then you can focus on all the bells whistles etc. EV up front costs are still well above the cost of ICE and that needs to come down to at least parity. It is really that simple. People try to justify the EV purchase and claim they are saving all this money. And the FACT is that unless you are driving a lot of miles it is not going to make financial sense. So just admit you want one regardless and enjoy it.
@@samjam6989 I think if you listen to Elon that was never the intent. The goal has always to get these cars into the hands of the masses. The govt tax incentives is just a bailout and will only distort the market longer and cause more problems just like we already see with the solar tax incentives. It is completely out of control.
Forgetting one really big one but as you said you don't have all the information yet. Personal property tax adds about $800 a year when compared to a comparable ICE car.
as an owner of a hybrid suv 2022, that cost 31k new, and considering a tesla model 3 standard range, im failing to see the value...
this isnt a EV hater debate, these are my findings with actual consideration for a tesla model 3. im not going into the range, or chargers working or not working, waiting time, or anything along those lines at all. this is comparing local daily use which is for most folks.
For starters, my insurance quote went up $1038 for 6 months over my current brand new car. thats $173 a month MORE for the same coverage. that alone made me close the order page. this was with progressive. others may charge less, I do not know if tesla insurance is in nevada, and they use your driving scores so this is a huge unknown at this point. it is possible, that if it is available here, my insurance MIGHT be comparable. i only have info that i can see here.
I currently get 400-420 miles range, costs me $35-40 to fuel each week.
standard range RWD model 3 that i wanted is 267 miles....in ideal conditions so ill assume 230 between charges(just over half my current vehicles range), with the upgraded wheels i chose, and its about $20 to supercharge if needed which i will need once a week, while doing some charging at home as well. i would save maybe $20 a week or about $1100 a year by doing one SC a week and rest of the time at home. currently, i cannot preddict if i will need to SC 2x a week....but im not going to factor that in, but I do know i would need to use it once a week for sure based on my habits.
oil changes for me are $80 5x a year $400 annual or $33 per month averaged out.
the payment for my car is $565 + 33 avg per month for oil changes is $598. a new model 3 would be $700 a month plus $173 a month higher on insurnace, or a higher expense of $275 a month, take away the gas savings of $80 a month $195 higher than my current car.
if the insurance difference wasnt the issue i would break pretty close to even out of pocket ($600 current payment and oil changes vs $700 tesla payment and no insurance change) considering both cars would be new, warranty would prevail for repairs, and the $80 saved on gas on average would really come close enough)
I did for the hell of it check insurance cost for a base kia EV6 with 310 miles rated range, which is a comparable vehicle to mine and the insurance was $308 more for the 6 months ($52 a month) over my current vehicle, but the vehicle is also more than the tesla.
in nevada, vehicle registration is based on base model MSRP when new, so my reg would increase with any EV by at about $200 annually, but thats barely $10 a month and im not going to factor that in.
people talk about tires, I currently have a wheel and tire package and have extensively used this. if tesla offered this I would use it as well. if not, then tesla would cost me more in tires
im failing to see where any savings will come from....thats insane the insurance difference alone is the real deterrent for me in regards to a tesla. I was shocked at how expensive it was to insure a tesla model 3....and it wasnt the performance either. I was actually considering making the switch, until i saw the insurance expense being the biggest and instant NO.
i think ill get the 2023 prius plug in when it comes out $40k fully or near loaded estimated price and AWD (current nearly loaded or fully loaded with paint options for the non plug in for 23 MY is about $37-39k), and 45-50mpg, which will only give me 30-40 miles of EV range (rumored), but if i charge it daily at home ill prob use a tank of gas every 2 weeks vs 1 week. 9 gallon tank is my guess on the plug in vs non plug in being 11gal. usually fill with 1/4 left as habit, so $20-30 to fill bi-weekly. tesla would be $20 a week....refueling/charging is compared to this example, 2x as much.
tesla is 5.8 for a model 3 0-60, the new prius AWD is being tested at 6.8 for the AWD non plug in. the plug in is rumored to have 220hp over the 196, and may do 6.5-6.8....slower, but not that much slower for the cost factors involved.
I would suspect the insurance for the new prius would be within that $0-308 increase seen in the EV6 i had quoted considering the cost of parts, speed, safety, history etc. the gas savings alone would cover a good chunk of that possible increase.
a base prius MSRP is similar to my SUV, so registration would be equal or within a $30 annually.
im sorry, but no matter how i keep looking at these EVs, and appreciate how silent they are, i love how silent my hybrid is in EV mode and the smoothness of it and the feeling of the TQ driving it etc its a seamless feel and i do appreciate it.....the cost and convenience factors just dont add up at all.
Automakers really dropped the ball when they ignored the real benefits and convenience of plug in hybrids. if many folks drive 50 miles a day average, an plug in for most cars would cover about 2/3 of that mileage if it was fully charged daily (most plug ins get 30-40 EV range). the average person may only fill up once per month in this scenario. (1500 miles a month at 50 miles a day 30 days. EV range of 35 miles 30 days 1050 electric miles. 450 gas miles used, assuming 38mpg for small SUV, is nearly 12 gallons and thats draining the tank pretty close to empty, at $3.50 a gallon thats about $40 a month, or $10 a week....$10 a week is cheaper than using a super charger once a week)
these comparisons are what i have seen, used, looked at. im not including other services as where one does this the other does that. all cars have alignments, tires, wipers, and other basic needs. im merely looking at new car vs new car, and oil changes being the most obvious and frequent service needed compared to an EV and under 100k miles....most cars have 100k spark plugs, transmission fluid, and coolant, and if many people trade in their cars in 5 years, thats usually 75-90k miles at trade in time.

@@mikaxms considering my quote, and the fact that my brand new hyundai is basically equal to the BMWs i have insured in the past there is a reason why a tesla costs more to insure than a BMW. when i traded in my 3 series my insurane was pretty much the same and the same coverages.

Tesla model 3 California DMV Registration is around $700 in 2023 and Tesla model Y registration in 2023 was around $750. In both cases, they rounded down to feel better about their choices.
Would be curious to see how these numbers come out with a more normal buying decision: comparing buying a used EV to a comparably specced used gas car. You can find Model 3’s around for less than 30k now. For a 2018 Model 3 for $27K vs a 2018 Accord for $20k, I bet the Tesla closes that gap quick and the other stuff (registration, insurance) is more comparable in the first place than on your Stone Age Hyundai.
Plus that Honda would be painfully slow compared to the Tesla and doesn’t even come in AWD. So the Model 3 is probably more fairly compared, performance-wise, to a more upmarket AWD sedan like an Audi A5 or something. (And I’m sure part of that insurance upcharge is the 4.5 second 0-60 in the Tesla)
i drive a 2016 mazda cx 5 paid off and do rideshare and other apps full time and am thinking about buying a tesla 3 for that reason and keep the cx5 since my sister just turned 18 and needs a car... really dont know what to do since i have no car payments and thats soooooo good!!!
When I bought my Tesla model 3 in 2018, we didn’t have an extra registration fee for EVs. This makes me pause before buying a new EV.
i think that you need to compare a tesla to a gas car that fall in its same category for example a model 3 performce cost 75k ish so that should be compared to a BMW M3 or a Mercedes C63 etc. since someone buying that expensive of a car could also afford the alternate if that makes
Actually a Tesla that can go 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds should be compared to cars like Audi R8 or Lamborghini because they have similar performance and speed. This car comparing it to a Sonata is like comparing a stealth black bird fighter jet to a Cessna propeller plane

I drive a 2020 BMW 330i and I love my car but I drive A LOT so I get about 3 oil changes per year so that’s about $240ish per year for me just in oil changes.
And of course, my car takes premium gas and on average I’m paying $300+ per month in gas.
So…I’m thinking of getting a Model 3. 🤣

@@qosmio2140 At my condo electricity is 42cents/kWh. Throw in the cost of wiring a 40 amp smart charger ($2,000) and the HOA demand for insurance ($900/year) and it's no better. Toyotas are much better cars, last forever with minimal repairs, and have good resale unlike Teslas which are worthless after the 8 year drivetrain warranty runs out.
There's no way govs will just let loose taxes from petrol. Its only matter of time we will pay extra taxes from EV charging or "using".

Dude I pay $193 a month just for insurance in the great state of Fraudrida 😂 MYP 2021 lease. You’ll have a breakdown here in Florida. Btw that was the cheapest, other Insurance companies were in the $250 to $350 a month

thank you. every time we would point out the other costs people seem to not think about it. also don't forget there would also be replacing the windshield wiper blades, windshield washer fluid, normal wear and tear maintenance (suspension, bearings, hinges, greasing joints, etc). makes me feel better about wanting to wait to get a good used one

Changing wipers etc. Is a wash with other cars. You mean for ICE cars you don't need to change them? Also how much is a wiper? $5 off Amazon, how much for windshield fluid? If your counting those then maybe you should just buy a bicycle but I guess those need maintenance too. What people mean by savings is about major expenses like $100 per week gas, oil changes, transmission fluid flush, etc. Plus other ones that can come later like timing belt change or expensive repairs like radiator replacement, gasket replacement etc. You know how much to change a gasket in Canada? $5000 plus. EV don't have that shit bruh
for some cars you tend to need more expensive parts than another car. my point was primarily that there are costs of maintenance that may get missed. and that they could be different between vehicles. I wasn't being harsh on EV's. just that there is more to a vehicle than driving. I had 2 cars that function the same (4 doors, 5 passenger cars). one an exhaust manifold was $2000 in parts, the other about $250 in parts. that same care the windshield wipers were also a different price because of the sizes they used. all my point was that it is wise to try to look at all the information one can because the devil is in the details
There is no difference between gas and electrics with these little things. No point even thinking about them. A. They are cheap, B. They can't be used to compare electrics with gas.
@@luisr4027 the point is some parts on different cars but the same function could be different in price by a large amount. Wiper blades may not have much of a difference, but struts can vary greatly in price
I may have missed it, but the only maintenance you calculated was oil changes? Not tune ups, not fluid services? Belts and spark plugs? Timing belt service can be $1,500 by itself and you don't want to neglect with an interference engine.

GEICO about a year ago for a Kia soul and an f150 made my note go from $600 a month to $1090 a month so yes it’s definitely possible 😭

Unlikely. I’ve seen many teslas go over 200k miles on their original battery with little degradation and my battery is LFP which should last even longer

@@TailosiveEV Sure, you did a good job. Sanata is likely about used up. I'd have mentioned that, for a new vehicle--depreciation is generally the number one cost but over 15 or 20 yrs, not so much. That's mainly in the first 5 say.
For those who point out that Teslas hold their value I'd just say that's somewhat temporary, newer better cheaper versions will see to that.

What is your ICE car? What brand? What year? I mean if you are thinking about budget and have low income and want to not pay much for a car then a Tesla is not for you at all. a year later they are fine cars. but wont save you a penny. I can buy a new loaded corolla and drive it 155k miles before i reach the 2024 msrp of a tesla3(20k less price, 4400 gallons of gas 35 mpg). At 154k miles your battery (replacement cost 14k) will be out of warranty for 35k miles (expires at 120k).
You will talk yourself into trading the car in before your battery fails because at this point the 60-70% depreciation makes your car worth less then the battery cost. So before you save a penny you'll trade it in. Just like i did twice with my 2005 and 2012 prius before i did the math. I didnt save a dime at the pumps that i didnt have to pay elsewhere to avoid the pumps. When you trade in the tesla at 130k miles a well maintained garage kept corolla could be driven for another 150k miles as long as im satisfied with driving an older high mileage car. And thats the issue. Most americans and people with money dont drive old high mileage cars they talk themselves into a newer one. Thereby not saving a dime.

That would certainly tie the tax more closely with the wear and tear on the road. Couple of downsides: 1) Reduced safety by incentivizing delayed tire replacement, 2) significantly deferred revenue to the state compared to collecting in advance or pay-as-you-go, and 3) shifting a substantial proportion of the tax to buyers of used vehicles. The latter would presumably be offset by lower resale prices, though it also could entirely eliminate the state collecting the tax by driving used EV exports to states with other collection schemes.

I feel we will have many improvements with Tesla and other EVs while gas cars are not improving too much.
The benefits per individual are very small. For the price of a Model 3 you can get a super luxurious ICE car that also accelerates quickly (not as much as an EV but more than enough) and drives super smoothly (and Tesla ain’t the best at that even in the EV space). It’s the “societal” benefits that are more important. Besides the benefits to climate change efforts for me the best thing EVs do is not impact air quality, which is especially crucial in an area like California.

I drive 1500-2000 miles every month. My old Nissan used premium fuel. Owning a Tesla is much cheaper for me.
A financed Tesla doesn't start to save money on gas till the bank is paid back their money first.
Save $600 a year to have range anxiety is totally not worth it.
So you spend the money for the car right works great doe’s awesome. But guess what 1 battery is 5,000$ soooo. Also it takes 30,000$ to put a charger in your home. Sooooo would you rather pay 60$ for a battery or 5,000$ for a battery.

There’s reports of tesla employees spreading and sharing embarrassing Tesla video footage to include intimate scenes. They also have access to see inside owners garages and so on.
While I’m sure we’ve all shared way too much of our privacy for comfort, being mocked by employees is still uncommon.
@@TailosiveEV I doubt it, because the FTC would step in for a violation of privacy policy. I highly doubt most companies are watching their customers intimacy and nudity and spreading it around the office for 2 reasons:
1) most things don’t have permission to record everything, or don’t have cameras to do so. Tesla owners enable that for “features”.
2) most companies would restrict who has access to that data and prevent misuse by monitoring it closely.
Clearly Tesla does not, and allows their employees to share nude customers amongst themselves in the office

LFP batteries are rated for 2K-4K cycles meaning well over 500k miles
One is a crappy sonata with 10 sec 0 to 60 acceleration and crappy Interior. The other is a super fast Tesla with hundreds of camera and sensors with high tech entertainment system and better looks. Its like comparing a Ferrari to a 1999 dodge neon

Ur gas savings is not very good becuz ur electricity rates are sky high, most people don’t pay 50 cents/kwh, where I live at 7 cents/kwh I will save big time when I get the cybertruck vs gas

Clickbait title and approach. Apples to oranges, new Tesla to old Sonata. Expensive cars have expensive registration and insurance. But Teslas are numerous enough that their tires are the same price and durability of an equivalent size and performance gas car. You forgot about all of the maintenance a gas car needs. And DIY gas car maintenance isn’t valid for most people. Good luck finding a place to change the oil for $30 unless it’s a lost leader promotion. Timing belt. Air filter. Water pump. Thermostat. Radiator hoses. Alternator. Starter. Power steering pump. Muffler. Catalytic converter (which might get stolen). Fuel filters. None of that on an EV.

Registrations for old vehicles are always cheaper than new cars. I understand you are comparing your old car to this, but you should compare a new car to a new car. Repairs on a 10+ year old car are going to be a big variable to this comparison also

It used to be difficult to pay more than $5 or $10 for a full charge at a Tesla Supercharger.
After several price increases throughout the last year, now many Supercharger stations are charging $0.50 per kWh, which can result in a cost of $30 to charge 60 kWh.

California is a deep state owned and operated region.. CA charges for an outrageous amount on everything. Then make up reasons to tax you with a pile of extra fees.
