Pros & Cons / This vs That = my fav style videos!
Love how you explain things to the newer people. thxs for the advice
You're very welcome, thanks so much for watching.
I have 6 Grills myself. One of them is a Blackstone. But to be honest. I love the propane grills as we can smoke on them as well. Cheers from BRANTFORD ONTARIO
6!!! Man after my own heart.
@@JohnnyBrunet cheers 🥂
Griddle can do everything the others can do, and a million things they can't. I even just smoked rips on my Blackstone with pellets in a smoking tube. Couldn't believe how well they turned out!
That's cool, I never thought of doing that
I’ve used a grill all my life. I’m 51. Bought a griddle last year. What’s a grill??????????????????????????????????? No comparison. Griddle wins all! 👍🏻💙✌🏻
Except now you lost great flavor
Great post Johnny. I finally got my Steelmade seasoned and made your smash burgers. Fantastic ! The reason i love it is because i have 2 in 1. Grill when i need and flattop when i need. When i get the space to have a full griddle i will be getting. But for now im a happy camper. Thanks for all your advice and tips. Much appreciated.
Awesome Bryan! I'm glad you got your steelmade and that the smash burgers came out well. Thanks so much for watching the videos brother.
Johnny I think a missing piece of advice involves that little Playmate cooler. If your going to fire up the griddle for a quick burger that..might..work but for serious grilling or certainly a smoking session that little cooler is totally inadequate for the proper beverage amount required 😊
Very very good point. A larger cook definitely needs a larger cooler. If not then you'd be forced to go back inside to the fridge and "someone" could question if you're cooking or just drinking 😁😁
In addition to my blackstone I have pit boss pellet grill. They compliment each other well. For example I smoke burgers low and slow and then sear on the Blackstone. No burger better than a smoked burger.
I just did that yesterday. They turned out great.
I was about to buy a pellet smoker and then saw a video using a smoking tube on a Blackstone with a cover. Smoked some ribs the other day and couldn't believe how well they turned out. I will not be buying a dedicated smoker now!
@@soddog4 really, I need to try that.
Great video and the King of the Hill reference was awesome.
Glad you caught that. I love that show.
Thanks Always 🎉 for the Education Johnny 😊
You're welcome Brian.

@@brianfeeney9493 I'm ready!
Great video. Thanks.
You're welcome
Top notch information!
Thanks Scott. I appreciate you always watching.
I agree with most all of this. I also have a lot of outdoor cooking equipment.
I can tell you that a Pellet grill is also great at grilling. They also do high heat. Not the best at searing but everything else is fine.
Burgers & Dogs for example will burn or char up just as easy as gas or charcoal. Not as fast but definitely will char food just fine. A pellet grill is a great grill, not just a smoker.
PS Pellet grilling will out pace a stick burner for smoke flavor if you want it to. Its best of both gas, stick, grill, & smoker all in one.
The flat top or griddle is really the only one that is very different or unique.
Get a gas griddle not a griddle top for the pellet grill.
The pellet grill will work with a griddle top however temperature control on gas is very much faster response vs wood fire.
Thanks for all the great insight! I'm sure it will be very helpful for people who watch this and are trying to decide what to get. I appreciate you commenting.
Good info Johnny!
Thanks Todd.
Johnny I have a Traeger and, hell yeah - you get the smoke flavor! And with your choice of pellets to boot...
But what you don't get is Browning / crisping, so (like you said) these are for certain things - low & slow. (i.e. a burger cooked on these has zero eye appeal! Lol)
That's good to know. I've never used a traeger before, I need to try one out. I've only used the green mountain pellet grill.
I like both the grill and griddle and thats why I have enjoyed a Camp Chef with the ability to change between the BBQ box and griddle. I wish either Blackstone would start doing a BBQ box so you can switch between the two OR I wish Camp Chef would switch to the "H" style burners. Another great video, thanks.
That's a great point Dave. I enjoy throwing stuff in the grill as well. And ya it unusual that Blackstone hasn't thought to maybe throw in a grill as well. Thanks for watching.
Aussie Dave in PA here Jonny,... I used a Pellet Smoker/Grill 1 season & dumped it.
For sure getting a Griddle, for sure keeping the Bacon Fat as I do now for the next cook 😎 try a Grilled Cheese cooked in Bacon Fat 👍
Hey Dave! I totally agree you can never have too much bacon fat lying around. It's great in everything.
I currently have a kettle and a kamado, now I'm looking at adding a griddle. It's nice to have options 😊
I totally agree, I probably have too many grills but I think each one brings something different to the table.
No such thing as too many of something that you and the people around you enjoy.
My wife rolls her eyes when I bring up new grills, but she also says it's her favorite hobby of mine.
It's also increased how often we host.
@@Herman_vi ya I can't wait to get out of this condo and start hosting people. That's another reason Ive bought so many.
I have all 3. Not a Charcoal or Stick Burner. I use to have a Stick Burner off set smoker. Then I got a Wood Chip Electric Smoker. Now I have a Big Horn Pellett Smoker. I like it a lot. But since I've gotten my Griddle. I barely use my Gas Grill or Big Horn. I don't think I've even cleaned my smoker out from my last cook. 😮😢😅 I'm just loving my Blackstone. Thanks for the informative vid.
Sounds like you got a good set up shawn. Glad you're enjoying the Blackstone.
Buying a Blackstone 3 years ago was one of the best purchases I ever made! It's so much better and more versatile than a grill or smoker. I've come to the conclusion that grilling and grill marks are way overrated. The complete sear (with a press/weight) on a steak versus the grill marks is far superior!
Ya the grill marks are for looks. I agree the complete sear is where it's at.
Great run down. I think you covered it all and really well. Pros and cons. Love that green egg. You must have had some glorious meals from that. I think possible the best and most efficient, flavorful way to smoke, grill, and roast. The griddle is so much nicer than trying to do things on a stove in the house. Even if you are using cast iron. The smoke, the mess, the smoke detector going off. Bacon is better on the flat top. Nothing can sear things better. I think trying to cook scallops is in my future next. Go bucks and love the CBC IPA.
Hey James thanks for watching. Ya I think a clean kitchen is definitely a huge perk to having a griddle. Go Bucks and I hope you drink some CBCs next Saturday while we beat down Indiana.
It is! But I made the mistake by using the griddle in the garage the other night (instead of the back deck) making smash burgers. It was at the very entrance/edge of garage, It was great until I found out the next day that everything within 10 feet of the griddle had a light coating of oil. That was lesson learned. I had some major failures lately as well. Like trying to make hashbrowns using thawed potatoes instead of putting them down frozen. Epic fail. I may have to go to the premade frozen patties like McDonald's or tator tots as you suggested! I also need more practice with pancakes. Also had a major fail with my collapsible/portable 22inch Blackstone. I collapsed it before removed the grease trap. Epic mess of grease and crap on the back deck. The bacon however was glorious. I have also found that good meat for the smash burgers does make a difference. 80/20 but a high quality meat just tastes better. Making freash ground beef with my Kitchen Aid attachment is in my future.
@@jamesmarsh3839 I've made pretty much all of those mistakes as well my friend.
I have a 3 charcoal grills, a mini BGE, old electric smoker, 6 burner gas grill with a griddle I made just like Camp Chef, brick fire pit, and who knows what else. The BGE and griddle are new to me (3-4 years maybe) so still learning. Enjoy your videos. Lots of great tips and ideas.
Sounds like you have a pretty awesome set up!!! I'm glad you like the videos and I appreciate you watching.
I love our griddle! I do wish Hank Hill would show me how to hook up a large propane tank. The flames flicker and go out on low. Thanks for the great information. How's that Texas toast sponsorship coming?
Still no word from Texas toast. That's weird that the flames are going out. Is it very windy where you have it set up at?
Another great and informative video Johnny, thanks for sharing. In my opinion, a griddle is a necessity, everything else is an accessory. Overall in the USA, 70% of cooking is done on a griddle or flat top stove. 12% baked, broiled or roasted in an oven. 10% grilling, 5% for microwave. 2% smoker and 1% in a toaster. By the way, keep the vermin out of your griddle, grill, smoker, oven, and any other outdoor kitchen appliance by using either cinnamon or hot pepper. Thanks again from the back woods of North Michigan.
Totally agree!
Very good breakdown and I agree with you. I'm glad you like the video and I appreciate you watching it. I'm going to give that cinnamon trick a try!
Fill up the cooler with ice. Gonna be a hot one this week in Ohio. We’ve had it mild so far but it’s August. I didn’t even know I needed a griddle till I got one for Xmas last year. Now I’ll never be without one. My son-in-law is all about the smoker, it’s good but not my thing.
I know this week forecast looks crazy hot! After last week I thought we might get an early fall. But I guess I never learn, lives here my whole life should know better than to try and guess the weather lol.
All 3!!!! 4 if you include the cooler of beer!
Amen!
Griddle it is, thanks!
You bet!
I got all 3. I use them all for whatever my cooking calls for. Smoking is definitely for cooler weather though, especially because i have an Oklahoma Joe smoker which you still use wood with. Almost forgot my charcoal weber kettle
Those Oklahoma Joe's look really cool. Is it a lot of work to watch it and continue to feed the wood? I want one some day but feel like I don't have the time to sit there with it all day.
@JohnnyBrunet in the beginning I could never keep a steady fire or temp. Just like anything else, lots of practice. I could give you a couple of go to CZcams videos that really helped me if your interested
@@mrmac123 one day when I get one I'll definitely be interested.
Excellent points about the versatility of a griddle - but IMO, some things like steak ARE a bit better when fire kissed & smoked...😉
Nothing wrong with a kiss of smoke!
From up here in the cheap seats… There is no reason to have just one means of outdoor cooking. I have a Camp Chef FTG475 griddle that I do the majority of my cooking on. But since there are a few things that don't go well on a flat top griddle, I also have a Webber 22 inch charcoal grill that uses a propane igniter to start the charcoal, making it very convenient. On the Webber, I cook beer butt chicken, hot dogs, bratwursts, and pizza.
I agree no need for just one, that's what I tell my wife.
For now I am restricted to an indoor griddle which has worked well for me. If I get an apartment that allows outdoor cooking I would get a Blackstone griddle. Everything I did make on a gas grill outside I do now on a griddle. Johnny you did a great job pointing out the advantages and limitations of these cookers.
Tha ks Guy, I'm glad you liked the video. Hopefully one day you can get an outdoor Blackstone as well but I know you make great meals on that e series.
You don’t have to choose. You get them all.
True story: I have a ceramic grill, a gas grill with a cast iron griddle I use on it, then I bought an OK Joe Bronco drum smoker. When I bought it my wife asked how many grills I needed. I told her with a wink the answer is always one more…
Fast forward to her shopping and buying another pair of yoga pants. I asked her how many pairs of yoga pants she needed. She says with a smirk and a wink, the answer is always one more. I told her “I see what you did there, and I respect you answer”.
She does love having them cause she doesn’t have to cook anything but the vegetables. I’m in charge of protein, she does the sides.
🤣🤣🤣 that's a great story. I think it's the perfect answer. Sounds like you two have a good system set up. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I have a pellet grill along with the blackstone. Electric cabinet for the overflow.
The real trick is the weed burner torch for the sear. That thing is the game changer.
I've never seen some one use a weed burner torch. I'll have to look that up.
@JohnnyBrunet I slow smoke steaks until about 100 degrees, then take that torch and try to set them on fire like they owe me money.
Thick sliced pork belly gets the same treatment, but with more teriyaki
@@number6mbw sounds amazing!
Good video Johnny ! The best part is the BEER ! LOL. I have a question what is your take on the camp chef 900 ? The 6 burner griddle ? I want one of them . THANK YOU FRANK FROM MONTANA....
I haven't used the 900 frank but it looks awesome! I'd love to have one someday but I wonder if heat management is difficult.
The most varied uses and ease of use, IMO... 1) propane grill 2) Weber kettle 3) pellet grill 4) griddle 5) kamado style 6) dedicated smoker (easy to clean, but mostly for smoking).
That's a good list, thanks for sharing and thanks for watching. I've still never used a Webber kettle for indirect, I need to give that a try.
@@JohnnyBrunet I wanted to put dedicated smoker before kamado style (I have both)... but kamado can get blazing hot or low and slow vs a smoker is just a smoker. Kamado is just a pain to clean up after cooking.
Great vid. Steak is always on the grill. Thought about getting a pellet grill but they are expensive. Any thoughts about a vertical electric smoker?
I've never used one but I know people like them and say they are very easy to operate.
My dream setup would be to sell my gas grill and my upright gas smoker, then purchase a komodo to grill, smoke, bake, and roast, plus keep my flattop!
Thanks for the comparisons. Cheers! 🍺🍺
That's what I got Dennis and I love it. Now I just need to get a bigger yard to put all my grills in.
Yeah Johnny the thing is to be organized like you are when cooking on The griddle when it comes to a girll or a smoker you just have more time and the less margin of error like when the guys want one more drink before we eat just turn it down😊😊
I try to be organized now because I definitely didn't used to be lol. But ya I agree about smoking, there's definitely more time to drink beer.
I have a griddle, gas grill, and charcoal smoker. Ribs pork butt and brisket go on the smoker, hot dogs and brats go on the grill, everything else is on the flat top.
Sounds like we have the same set up Dale.
great segment and breakdown. i have a grill, a griddle and a smoker. i see Webber makes a griddle top for their grills now. i used to use the grill all the time in the summer. now, i use the griddle 4 or 5 times a week. mostly for breakfast or dinner. i use the smoker about once a month, mostly for jerky i like the one pan analogy. I had to buy a cover for my Blackstone. cooking on it is easy. last night i made up some stir fry. in the morning i did some breakfast burritos. so versatile. i have trouble with field mice, mostly in the winter. i just set traps. they work pretty good. thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching and for the feedback from your experiences. 4 to 5 times a week is a lot you might use it more than me lol. I've never done jerky before on my green egg, I need to give it a try.
Or…. You could be like me and own them all. Lol. I’m an outdoor cooking addict. Gets pretty expensive though.
I'm on my way to owning them all lol.
Great video, again. Your presentation style rates, on a scale of a low 1 to a high of 10, about a12. Note, our regular gas grills (I have 2) both have grease cups that too can attract vermin just like our adventure ready blackstone might. A bear tore one of our earlier grills apart to get to its grease catcher. Its best to just accept and enjoy the wildlife, along with the great meals that grills and griddles help create.
Thanks so much, I appreciate you always watching Grant and I'm glad you like my style. That's crazy that a bear came through!!!! Aube you're used to stuff like that but I'm just a city boy from Ohio and that blew my mind lol.
@@JohnnyBrunet "bears gotta eat too .

gotta have a griddle(or two). my blackstone 36 outdoors until snow. blackstone 17 indoors on the stove under the hood. it works. just got a pellet smoker. two cooks so far and the jury is still out. side note about gas grills. get a weber or better. the cheapos arn't worth it. my 20 year old vermont castings is still kicking ass. and if you want the best and time allows, blow the dust off your old weber kettle.
I totally agree with all of that Malcolm. I have an MHP grill and it's built like a tank. I don't use it as much as the griddle but it still works great.
Only thing missing for me is my Jack Russel “Finnegan”, my little taster buddy!
Yup they are the best taste testers. I hope you give hime some great food. My wife and I just put down our 16 year old Jack Russel a few months ago. Give Finnegan a hug for me.
Hey Johnny is that beer opener option on that pellet grill or is that standard equipment
Standard equipment on all my grills lol. I think it's standard on that particular one but not all pellet grills.
@@JohnnyBrunet kids today don't know what they're all about everybody had one mounted on their kitchen door trim at one time I remember in the bar intown in the mid-90s this kid asked his mom what that was I guess it was kind of a way of life for us
