Surreal to have monthly updates about something I've hoped to look forward to for something like 23 years. Loving the look, can't wait to see the models in motion!
Seeing so many people not get why 3D models have been chosen. If done right, you can take 3D models and have them appear 2D with certain shading & lighting techniques. Look at Spiderverse or Klaus, but then think “smaller budget variant”. That’s what this movie will likely look like… and I think it can be pulled off well!
While I agree with your statement, and NPR techniques are getting increasingly better; Klaus was not 3D! While they may have blocked in a few shots using 3D, particularly complex shots like the sled chase, it was traditionally animated! You can see many of the behind-the-scenes on their SPA Studios youtube channel.
Klaus is actually the opposite - it's all hand drawn but shaded in a way that makes it look 3D! Though in general I agree. With the right shaders and proper restraint when animating the characters (ie, still animating them on 2s or 3s like the original series), we could get something pretty cool outta it.
@@andrewrules231Only in certain scenes like the Planet Express flying and those exclusively with Bender or other robots which are easier to do in that style
@@dragonmanover9000 actually pretty much every ship on the show in every season with the exception of some way in the back ground. If you look closely at the tubes people travel in and alot of the shots of the city's especially the moving camera shots it's all 3D. The dvds have a bunch of spinning 3D models in the extras. A good 25% or more of that show uses 3D. Just listen to the commentaries for each episode because when they actually let David X Cohen talk he constantly is pointing out the different 3D effects they used. Even robot Santa is 3D
Nice update!! Love this nerdy behind the scenes stuff. I also hope we get some sort of update on the soundtrack music as well...the series had some of the best song choices that fit everything so well. It's one of my main concerns since MTV was probably heavily involved with that back in the day. Fingers crossed!
Hell yeah! I love me a "hair flip" toggle! The first handful of shows I worked on were doing the "3D but look 2D" style, and we had a few characters that had a cowlick to didn't work from one angle. So we made 2 sets of hair and toggled between them mid pose change, and it always looked so slick in real time! These are looking awesome!
I would strongly doing an interview with Rebel Taxi, he likes to interview cartoonists, and he's obsessed with your show, I would also recommend talking with Doug Walker.
Ah that’s right, Retro came on at 8:00pm in 2001/2002 with Road Runner Show, The Hulk, Spiderman and Rocket Robin Hood. Then it was Teletoon Unleashed starting at 10:00pm with Oblongs, Mission Hill then Undergrads. I think Spicy City and Spawn were added at some point too…
I get what David says. When I was learning how to draw male characters, I Googled tons of male torsos. So now my Facebook page is full of ads of almost naked men promoting underwear and stuff.
I’d be honoured to do the soundtrack on the house. Just like a copy of the movie! My mastered stuff is on my album on Spotify I have some rough stuff on the channel :)
growing up my parents wouldnt like it when i watched adult swim/teletoon at night. when they needed to sleep for work, it was an unforgettable experience watching some UnderGRADS. i wasnt even born when this show aired. except when re-runs of the show played on the teletoon at night channel. i dont think we'll get the same feelings of life from the early 2000s but im so happy that this show gets an exciting conclusion with the movie. thank you for creating such an amazing show for teen/adult canadians who grew up watching cable tv every night.
As someone who's currently in school for 3D Animation, it's super cool seeing these kinds of behind the scenes looks at the process of modelling characters being applied to one of my favourite shows of all time! Really hoping the movie is a huge success so that we can get more Undergrads, but also so I can apply to work on any future projects once I've got more than 4 months of schooling under my belt!
This might be a really stupid question, but I have to know, what does Gimpy think of Star Wars expanded universe stories, does he like or dislike it? If he likes them, what's his favorite story, also what would he think of Disney Star Wars?
Real question: Since the movie won't be beholden to TV standards. Will it be R rated? Can get some 'adult' content from characters that we know would drop some F bombs and Rocko alone is R rated :D
@@MrJans3n LOL. I just hope that Yannick Bisson from Murdoch Mysteries provides his voice again, just like in the original Undergrads series. Bisson also did the voice of Stoner Dave!
I really, really hope you are only going to be use these for reference. There is a soul to 2d animation that 3d cannot possibly emulate, and I really hope that's not lost in this process.
Wasn't even aware there was a new Undergrads project! What a great way to discover this. Looks like there's a talented team behind it too so now my interest is piqued!
loved the show and was disappointed there wasn't any more seasons. I think rocko being wasted was probably one of the funnier moments " wieners wieners wieners, you put em in your mouth......"
Cost. He's currently funding production of this movie mostly himself beside the Kickstarter. The Kickstarter money was not enough to even produce this whole movie, let alone another season/series. SO... He's just not going to make any promises he can't keep right now. MAYBE if a production company picks up and funds another season it could continue - and by that I mean they'd have to buy/license the rights from MTV, who is grudgingly holding the IP hostage - to produce anything further. He barely got enough leeway from MTV to even make this movie. He can't even sell T-shirts, he doesn't have merchandising rights. SO maybe if this movie miraculously makes a couple million dollars profit - maybe - then someone might be interested in continuing it.
That's a video call feature most platforms have. You'll see it a lot in corporate meetings. It's nice when you've gotta take a meeting from home and don't want people peeping at your stuff
Both have their merits. While 2D will always be prime animation... even Don Bluth used 3D when it was warranted to make a larger detailed world. In this case, though, 3D's merit is that it is budget friendly. Once the 3D models are created, he can sit in his studio and keep animating scenes completely on his own if he has to, and it would be far more efficient then drawing and shooting cells on his own.
I know this is a sensitive subject for artists (myself included), but I've got to ask... With the accelerated rate of AI in the animation/filmmaking field, it's looking very likely you'll be able to generate full episodes of Undergrads in under two years -- for a fraction of the time and cost of doing it all by hand. Just asking for sake of conversation, has this been on your mind at all while putting this project together? Again, I know its a touchy subject and I don't want to rattle anyone, but I just want to know where everyones coming from these days with this medium transforming the way it is...
Not on the team, but I am not concerned about AI. As with other developments in art and tech, there is a benefit to saving time, but any work that is meaningful or very specific (like the style of a tv series like this one) requires real people to perfect it. Viewers often don’t understand the amount of work that goes into finessing things; like they showed with Cal’s model, they made 2 versions with his hair combed to either side. AI at this point likely wouldn’t understand that, and try to blend it through the middle of the animation. My response to AI has always been to not underestimate uncanny valley.
The models look great, can't wait to see them rendered to look like 2D! Love these more frequent updates!

You can add the black outlines if you use the "toon-shader" technique. Also the toon-shader will look more drawn if you use them as well.
Cheers
Everything looks fantastic!
Let's go!
Thank you SO much for all these videos... updates... and behind the scenes content... appreciate you and all the staff helping

That's perfect. If they go that route I wouldn't care less if I'll have to wait until 2XXX
I'm looking for the original soundtrack that aired on MTV. I wrote an article on the Lost Media Wiki and have uploaded three of the episodes.
