    I was a little disappointed with the DLC because it does the thing where it unrecruites and rerecruits the units every map making them kinda bad

    It feels like the game wants you to tackle the dlc with end game units who have inherited skills and when you have most of or all of the emblems.
    But the rewards for completing the Xenologue are characters which you would naturally want to actually run so it’s pulling in opposite directions.
    I had started a new maddening play through in the lead up and got it to Solm and tried to do it then and was met with a pretty nasty challenge.

      I agree, it feels like on hard and maddening feel like endgame stuff. But on normal you could do almost all of it as soon as you get it. It's insane how drastic the differences between normal and hard is.

    • @TheCozypillow
      @TheCozypillow Před rokem +5

      That’s why this game needed new game plus so you can do a normal play through first to get the units and train then come back on maddening difficulty. Playing this on maddening without prebuilt super units is just pathetic

    My main complaint about the dlc is the difficulty because normal mode was so easy, and I'm not the best ot the game, so hard felt insanly difficult to me like the jump was so insane that it feels like there should be a difficulty between the 2

    • @lanceareadbhar
      @lanceareadbhar Před rokem +10

      IS does this a lot and I never understood why they don't have easy mode, which is the current normal mode, and then make a normal mode that is somewhere in between this and hard mode.

    • @lanceareadbhar
      @lanceareadbhar Před rokem +10

      Also, I've personally found that using endgame units makes Hard a lot more bearable, especially with the right inherited skills and bond rank with Emblems, but that goes against the idea that you'd want to use the new characters since they are so underleveled. I would go with Normal to recruit the characters and Hard for Endgame. You can also look up builds foe Alear to one turn the final map Maddening which I found very satisfying given the what the DLC put me through.

  • @laprayprey

    I thought Engage had one of the best balanced Maddening Difficulty until I played Fell Xenologue. Goodness these maps were a cluster as if Intsys deviated away from everything that made this game enjoyable. I don't mind babysitting a couple of bad units if the game gives me tools to make them viable (i.e. forges, class changes) except there is no tool and I'm forced to watch the house burn on fire. Ironic how I did the same thing as in your footage where I just parked Ivy with Soren equipped and proceeded to turn off my brain.

  • @illusive-mike
    @illusive-mike Před rokem +21

    I loved the concept of that final map, but it's also the only map in the entire game where I (playing on Hard) used the battle saves to overcome the rewind limit, because even then the map was extremely punishing in the final stretch (Diamant had set up a choke on the entrance to the top-right island and I couldn't get there faster while blocking the reinforcements LIKE THE MAP SUGGESTS). It's a map (and mode overall) that pushes so hard it makes you appreciate the forced Casual Mode (I needed a trip to Maddening Camilla to banish that mirage).
    And the integration is just so terrible on so many levels that you have to ask yourself why they threw the perfectly good structure CS had out the window while making this, in a game with the best modern FE gameplay to boot. They literally don't let you just play "base game with Cannoneer Jade" and I don't know why.

    • @lanceareadbhar

    14:40 That's actually the same thing I felt. I felt like I was constantly just a little bit shy of thresholds I needed to be hitting. Not quite enough strength. A few points of defense shy of survival. And don't get me started on the hitrates.
    Honestly, if the DLC let me use my own units, or if it even gave the pregenerated ones just a couple of extra levels, it would have felt a lot better. If I had access to a few forged weapons and a few of the lower rank higher accuracy ones I wouldn't have struggled nearly as much. Part of my struggle was definitely doing it before chapter 10 because I wanted the units for my playthrough and I didn't want to wait until after I got jacked (plus just a few more bond fragments for canter) I had less tools, so I was struggling a bit, but come on. Every map coming down to a few times where I just have to say "If I miss this 60% I lose." feels sucky. Same with bringing archers specifically to deal with fliers and them not even being able to do that right.

I’ve seen clips of the maps being cleared in 1-2 turns are clearly not what the devs intended with how much work they did to make the levels. • @UltimusTerminus
    @UltimusTerminus Před rokem

    I completed my first playthrough of the game today on Maddening and I unironically like Chapters 5 and 6. I tried doing FX before Chapter 10 of the main story, but after wasting like 30 hours on Chapter 6 alone I gave up for a while and only returned before Chapter 17 of the main game.
    I went bottom left - center - top right - top center, but I pushed like crazy from the start by using Goddesse Dance from Nel at every opportunity since Turn 1 and feeding her all the emblem energy spots. The key part is triggering and killing Timerra on turn 6-7 before Rafal moves to the central island, because once he starts spawning Mage Canoneers and Diamant summons emblems you can't afford to waste any time. Once you survive this brutal onslaught and the central island goes down with all the mage canoneers the map becomes way more manageable, the remaining 4 royals aren't as threatening offensively and you get to enjoy like 3 turns away from Rafal and his vortex summons, since they can't leave the island before he destroys it.
    The DLC characters needed a bit of babysitting, since they were underleveled compared to my party, but Rafal and Zelestia ended up being my strongest characters. Rafal had Lunar Brace+ and Speedtaker along with Edelgard Emblem, while Zelestia with Chrom's Engage bonus to magic and Levin Sword with Weapon Sync + was a one rounding untouchable machine.

    I have a fan theory about the engage, alternate universe. My theory is that the three main Timelines, the main timeline, the fallen timeline, where the heroes are all dead in fire emblem: awakening,and DLC where are the heroes going to the future and defeat the evil Dragon.
    These three timelines created three more timelines , because universe is the main universe creates other universes. Pretty much this universe, comes from the fallen timeline, where the evil dragon was defeated in the past leave in the world pretty much is barren but some survivors that re-created civilization. which leads to three houses.
    Which creates this fallen universe I guess were most of the characters are, let’s just say opposite versions of the heroes and villains.

Sure, you can do everything in your power to work around the Fell Sigil’s minus 50 to attack/ crit but if I’ve learned anything from Chapter 25, why fight the onslaught of enemies, when they’re just gonna die anyways. Yes, he gets stronger as he flies through the map, but that same effort you put into 1 turnings him, can be done on the top of the map with a lot less stress.

    Yeah despite enjoying my time, I agree with most everything being said. I don't recommend it to people who aren't planning to play it more than one or two times, and FX lowkey kills replayability anyway by having to do it for every file anyway. I still am willing because Engage is just too fun for me to put down, but I am not the average person.
    Only thing I'll go up to bat for is characters, because while the other royals were boring like it was said in the video, I do think they nailed the feel with the Firenese royals. Céline in particular more or less feels like she went off the deep end at some point, because we know she already has the capability to be ruthless, it's just hidden in supports. Otherwise, she still seems to be the same person with the same pastimes as evidenced with some battle quotes. Alfred doesn't feel as good as the exploration into FX Céline imo, but his disposition feels like it fits when you remember he's a stressed, young king in FX. If they continued to do stuff like with Céline, where they highlighted something that was already there in the ones we know, I feel like the other royals could have been significantly more impactful. Alas.

  • @eliminat20
    @eliminat20 Před rokem

    Personally I think Fell Xenologue is good. Just like the base game there are some downfalls, such as FX’s stupid idea of not being able to trade weapons with the FX characters and the fact that it does break the main game balance but It was still a great challenge to conquer next (Personally FX would be better if you fix both of these and my idea for fixing the second idea would be have the levels under a progression lock, so you can’t just beat FX and then cries for a bit in the main game). The fun thing about Fire Emblem games is there are plenty of ways to play them (with varying degrees of freedom and difficulty) and as such this means strategy can take many way shapes and forms. So rescue skipping or one turn nuking are viable strategies to play. I think I’m going to do just a hard play through of the game next, but I’m going to try and see if I can time the Fell Xenologue maps to their respective counrerparts, but I’m still also trying to max out my first run account just for the heck of it.

    I want to say that the first map and the status effect that was added to the enemies made me really not want to play the rest of the dlc for all the reasons you mentioned. Plus, the one Jeagen unit has his promotion stats revoked, which is such a detrimental hit to vander. Like, Vander, honestly... deserved better in this game. Like I get he is the early game prepromote.... but to have his role as a distraction just revoked from him in the dlc just ruins him. His personal skill is nice and wasted on him because of his base stats and growths.
    I felt like that first chapter might have been better if they allowed him to keep his promoted status. I know a lot of the community is like, "He is the cructh character you shouldn't use him." And I get that, but to have that part of him just stripped away on a map that he maybe could have made a big difference on since it gives no exp would have maybe left some tatics on the plate.
    As for the status effect, it's very similar to the hp one in fates, which is the only difference being that it stacks and does damage. It just made me hate the dlc from the very first chapter.

    • @LinkKing7
      @LinkKing7  Před rokem

      The status wasn't really that big of a deal because Merrin was one shotting most of them, and if you kill them, it doesn't proc the effect.
      As for Vander, he isn't the only one who got completely robbed, a lot of the units end up being relatively useless due to them being locked in their base classes, like Anna and Jean...

    I think the DLC is worth it overall, but don't just buy it for the Xenologue DLC. I've gone from hating the Xenologue DLC to oddly enjoying it, but I still can't stand the implementation of it. If you want to use the new units, just play it on Normal as quickly as you can just before Chapter 10. If you want to play it on Hard or Maddening, just wait until after beating the game and then setting up your army to fit the ludicrous system so that they have the skills and Rings that will work in their base classes since you can't change their classes, but your inherited skills and bonds with Emblems do carry over for some reason. I liked the ideas that they had for the DLC, but I thought it was horribly executed.
    The funny thing was that breaking point was Chapter 3 on Maddening as I assumed the reinforcements were infinite and I kept trying to move faster only triggering more of the zones. This again I thought was horrible design as the reinforcements would have worked so much better based on turn count to push the player to move faster instead of punishing the player for moving faster given that a frail unit was a Game Over condition.

      Regarding the final map, I assumed his path was based on the number the Royals remaining, but after I took out the last one, he moved to the middle right, stayed there for three turns, then moved to the center when there was still one more in the top left that you mentioned. My only guess was that one is used if a certain Royal was still alive, but not sure. This was on hard and the reinforcements were under control, so basically my remaining army was standing around for three turns waiting for him to move the the tile that didn't give the 50 damage boost.
      I also did the Alear build to one turn it on Maddening and that was very satisfying. My last round of combat was exact damage needed which may not be a coincidence.

    I spent a week progressing through the final map on maddening. It taught me that my set up in the base game has a glaring flaw and needs to be looked at (50 heroes spamming chain attacks).
    No chapter in any fire emblem ever has forced me to strategize this hard, and i appreciate the xenologue for that even if it felt unfair.
    I went with the intended route as the boss jumps, however, i quickly realised that he IS supposed to eat his friends. You just have to snipe down the royals before it gets troublesome! And Crowd Control the reinforcements as they spawn.

    IS usually has problems designing the lategame of FE games and FX was the first (?) time where they knew exactly what stats, classes and resources the player will have, except for rings/skills. With all that considered, they still failed in almost every aspect. I don't think the story was particularly good, I couldn't bring myself to care/like it enough, but it was still the best part of the package.
    One of my favourite things in FE is earning XP after defeating an enemy. I understand why it's not a thing in FX, but still, killing enemies doesn't feel good / rewarding.
    I'm not a fan of locked classes. If I inherit Axe power on a Wyvern Kagetsu in the main game, it becomes completely useless and a waste of SP in the FX. To have a decent time on Maddening, you need to build the characters around their canon classes in the main game, which just sucks.
    I liked waves 1-3, but somehow wave 4 managed to do everything wrong. We know the game was finished more than a year ago, but they should've definitely taken note from how the other team handled the DLC in 3 Houses.
    I enjoyed your Ace Attorney reviews, so I'm definitely looking forward to more non-FE content!

      Yeah, they definitely had some issues with balance and design here and I'd be a fool to sate otherwise. I definitely had to go back and redo some of my base game builds because OOPS ALL WARRIORS was my thing for a bunch of it.
      And glad to hear you like the Ace Attorney ones! We're continuing the Capcom theme with the Battle Network series as a whole, and I'll go back and finish the rest of AA at some point as well!

    As someone who loves engage and have 800 hours logged playing, I’ve only done the dlc once because I don’t find having weaker units fun. And also none of the DLC characters are more powerful than base game. There’s no Yuri or Hapi like in 3 Houses that are so good it’s worth recruiting. Maybe Zephia to get another mage flyer but she’s not worth the pain that is Fell Xen.

    Pretty much most of the games a fire emblem, to fire emblem awakening is the Prime universe of all the fire emblem, spinoff games.
    Fire emblem: engage, and the alternate universe were created by the prime fire emblem universe, which were created by awakenings time travel, which created multiple timelines. Now there are three main timelines that I mentioned earlier the alternate universe in fire emblem engage comes from the fallen timeline.
    Because in three houses , there are three alternant Timelines if you pick the red lions, the blue Eagles, or the golden Deers, one of those timelines leads to the alternate engage. there’s also the spin off game fire emblem, three houses: three hope which is also an alternate timeline, which could lead to this timeline
    Pretty much engage and the alternate timeline are just parallel universes were created by awakenings time travel . Which creates a I guess fire emblem multi-verse.😱😱😱😱🤓🤓🤓🤓 let’s just say fire emblem timeline, and Multiverse is complicated.

    To be honest if you forget Rafal who make a good crit tank and Zelestia who is busted, is there any other unit interesting for maddening? Nel hit she was using a toy as a weapon, and the two others seems garbage to me...
    The worst is that they come with a internal level of 20 what really sucks with the stats they have.

    I've played the first map shortly after release (by buying Vantage for Merrin to cheese every single wolf on the map with Sieglinde) saw the second map, didn't feel like doing it bc it looked like a chore, and put it off to this day
    I get why they don't let you bring your actual units into the FX but at this point, why let (read: force) the player bring in their inherited skills and bond levels. Just about any class change you did in the main game will mess up your FX setup. Don't know if later maps change it but half the roster is stuck in unpromoted classes. Do they just want the first half of all units, including force-deployed Alear, to suck? Very glad I hadn't used Merrin that run, that way she still had the base SP I needed to buy her a cheese build, but at this point just do the Cindered Shadows thing, give everyone fixed skills along with their classes, and balance the maps around those. And don't start the DLC by making your cool new characters useless flunkies that get doubled by every enemy on the map and aren't even good Corrinbots bc they can't friggin have Draconic Hex.

    • @LinkKing7

      The characters, their levels and their classes scale based on the chapters you're in, so they DO level up and promote, it's just fixed for each chapter.

    i bought it cause when i looked everyone said it was worth it.
    i started a new playthrough on maddening after bying the dlc (compleated the game once on hard before i bought any dlc) i have enjoyd the main game on both difficulties so far. of couse maddening is easier with the bracelets but im not a hardcore player so i dont really care. this is my first time playing on the hardest difficulty.
    either way. at this point i just put the fell xenologue on normal difficulty and is using auto-battle to do the fights.
    after struggeling for a bit i just compleatly lost interest in playing this. at this point im only going through it to unlock the classes. i dont know the specific reasons why struggeling on hard and maddening is somehow more fun for me but the xenologue is just not fun. its not interesting and quite frankly i have compleatly lost interest in it, even the story.
    no matter how good in comparison to the main game it is, i just dont care any more.
    sorry just needed my frustrations out. i want the new classes for my build but im just sitting here bored out of my mind waiting for it to be over cause i stopped caring about it

      I usually like to use a $1 per hour rule in terms of valuation, unless the entertainment value is much higher. The fact that I make content on it means I'm definitely getting my money's worth, but for others, I don't see the DLC adding that much value to the base game outside of some extra fun on a second run.

    MegaMan Battle Network Content On the future?! I'm sold!, although I do understand the update. Engage just arrived and got left somewhat forgotten very quickly in the online discussion Unlike Three houses which still has Ongoing discussion (Even though it's the same "EDELGARD did nothing Wrong" Discussion since day 1. I personally blame the characters and story of Engage being so watered down that Deep discussion is nothing interesting at all (Except gameplay which is amazing and all but Gameplay doesn't make me hooked to the game itself.
    Fell Xenologue is a disappointment to a tee. It has some of the worst Abysmal Gameplay decisions that far exceed Awakening levels of map design and game mechanics. The fact you have to Throttle every single playthrough just to experience the new characters and classes is not fun at all. It's even worse that Three Houses did things right with the Ashen Wolves DLC only having to be beaten once to enjoy the rewards for the rest of your playthroughs. I have yet to beaten Engage due to the shallowness of the characters and the DLC is a definite not buy with the questionable execution. It all feels rushed and I believe that they rushed it out because they probably overextended what they wanted to do.

      Yessss, Battle Network content VERY soon actually, not far away in the slightest! (I'm working on it right now as a matter of fact)
      And yeah, Engage's hype dying is honestly quite annoying since it wasn't even just the hype that died, it was discussion about the game overall that just vanished in terms of it's relevance. It hurts our bottom line as creators as well so I'm kinda bummed about that. Hopefully we get the next game announcement soon enough!

  • @Flutterdark_
    @Flutterdark_ Před rokem

    Before the gameplay section starts in the video i wanted to let off my own thoughts about the gameplay.
    i started it on hard but quickly turned it down to normal and there is a few reasons as to why.
    a) since you have nel and nil in addition to alear, you ahve 3 units that arent allowed to die instead of just one, given some their stats that makes 2 of those at minimum unusable. especially on higher difficulties
    b) i feel that the challenge was badly designed in higher difficulties, because while your stats, class, and inventory are fixed, your skills ARE NOT. thats right any skill you have on one of your units still can be used. this means characters who arent dependant on one weapon, cause the dlc is a coward and never gives you killer axes, can run in full power.
    on the other hand it makes using the new characters really an edge case at best because your units, because of the skills, are usually just better.
    Edit: i forgot they are force deployed so you might aswell send em out to do stuff but they still suck
    c) this is more a nitpick but it really should ask you the desired difficulty when starting the xenologue, first time i went in on my normal save file i didnt know it was set to hard. that savefile originally started on hard but i put it to normal to get more familiar with the game first.
    alongside these issues some of the decisions feel just wierd. like instead of having the convoy be auto filled with anything on units you didnt deploy its just nonexistent. and with some items you dont want to shuffle this around every chapter.
    Having access to all your rings also makes the dlc harder or easier depending on when you actually do it. which spits even more in the face of a dlc that presets this much but then allows you to bring emblem rings in.
    also some chapters are just meh in general. but if they would have locked ALL aspects of an unit they then could have balanced each difficulty truly around the preset stuff. and as a side note some units are really really shit like they still had anna in her axefighter class for some reason when the entire community knows shes a mage.

    the dlc was awesome, the new classes are fun, the new characters are great, super worth it. on another hand megaman BN collection seems pretty lame, yea the combat is fun but it has terrible balancing issues, the story is garbo and the pvp gets immersion-ruined by everyone using summons, which makes no sense in a one-on-one for another navi to hop in, freeze time, attack you for a bunch of undodgeable damage and then leave.
