    Good information. My 2 cents:
    $0.01; The sound transfer also works with other FM synths, even 4 operator models. e.g. DX7 to DX9. Manny DX7 sound will work just fine. It won't sound exactly the same, mainly for 2 reasons. 1) Only the first 4 operators are used (duh). And 2) You need to dial back the operator output levels a bit.
    $0.02; Some very old Yamaha firmware for DX7 and DX9 does not play nice with any "newer" Yamaha gear/firmware. The "newer" gear locks up when you connect the midi cables.
    A bit technical: Those very old DX7 and DX9 do something nasty: Instead of standard midi sensing messages they send Yamaha sysex headers.
    The problem is those headers are not followed by a sysex close block. The receiving unit simply does not know what to make of it .
    Note: Gear from other brands ignore those sysex headers so everything works fine in that case.

      Thanks for more info.
      This should explain why my friend’s DX9 never played nice with any of the 6OP stuff (we’re talking 1987-88(. I had no trouble using another unit to do a bit of limited editing on some of the TF1s. So we could never figure out why one worked and another didn’t.
      I have done my best to demystify compatibility between different FM synths in the FAQ section otherwise. facebook.com/hedge777/posts/124799085893714

    Just sharing my DX7II EDIT->16&32 result: My display shows v1.3 87.01 and no battery voltage info. Instead, on the right side there are two blinking cursors. The one on the bottom is normal. The one above it is faint. Then, all the lights illuminate momentarily and the LCD reads Yamaha DX7II Synthesizer, like the startup message.

      Link for DX7II )d and FD) including both factory voice and performance data (+ some additional banks) is in the description. I just updated it actually :-)
      Keep in mind that without a RAM4 cartridge you’ll only be able to load 32 performances and 64 voices at a time.

      It’s in MIDI pages. Hit “edit” and then buttons 31 or 32 (can’t remember exactly). MIDI out stuff (where you can send edit buffer contents, voice, performance, bank data) is all there.
      I’m about 7000 miles away from my DXs. NO videos until I get back inland. Whenever that’s going to be.

    Now I just need you to make some E! Response based videos for the Mk1 so I can learn it a bit faster. Working with a scanned pdf of the manual is a nightmare.

    • @Hedge777
      @Hedge777  Před 7 lety +1

      LOL I had to learn the original E! on a DX with broken display and no manual. That was before the internet... I WISH I had the E! for my MKII. Really hard to track down. But I hear ya. Scanned PDFs can be a time waster. Think I even tried looking at the one for E! and it was rotating pages and zooming in every other page. Not the best way. With the E! Response it's probably a hack of a lot more to learn. Original one was basically MIDI enhancements and not much more. I should do a vid on it anyway. It's not the most intuitive thing.

    • @bjh13us
      @bjh13us Před 7 lety

      I hope you do. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't change half the original DX7 functions as well. Took me an hour to figure out how to disable internal memory protect so I could play around with some voices. I love this thing, got it for a great price and it's practically mint condition, but it sure is frustrating sometimes. I'm still trying to figure out how to change the MIDI velocity out so it sends from 000 to 127 instead of 016 to 127 as it's set right now.

    • @Hedge777
      @Hedge777  Před 7 lety

      Oh that memory page... Probably took me just as long to figure it out...
      Don't think it lets you go lower than 016 now that I think of it. I'll have to investigate again. I've been scaling velocity in Logic for the past 20 years. I know that the SER-7 actually did 0-127 but I'd rather suffer with E! or SuperMAX.

      Yes. But the mod wheel/aftertouch/CC assigns would have to be reentered. Per patch (RTFM for more). Also, gonna sound cleaner and some patches that relied on original DX7 software bugs won't work the same. Something to keep in mind.

    Thanks for this video! I have one question. I'm a new owner of this synth and new to the synthesizer world as well. So far I have managed to transfer the SysEx files for the original DX7 sound bank onto my DX7IID. But of course, as you said, all data for the modulation/after touch is gone. I was wondering if you had any information or file that gives the original mod. and aftertouch data/values for each of those patches on the DX7? I've managed to assign and save values for these settings, now I wanna be as accurate as possible to the DX7. And honestly most of these patches aren't as fun without a little pressure modulation

    • @Hedge777
      @Hedge777  Před 4 lety

      Pink Litmus I remember there were recommended settings for breath controllers. However settings for pitch and amplitude modulation for every patch were left to interpretation. I personally prefer a little vibrato on aftertouch and then vibrato and amp modulation for the mod wheel. But that’s only my personal preference.
