    My experience -- if a student can get admitted to the grad program, they can complete the Ph.D. It may not be revolutionary research - or even publishable research - but the grad school will generally march you through the process to the degree. Our school only had one guy that just couldn't make it through (he took a Masters and left).

    One of the MOST important things when you study for a phd and to a lesser extent for a masters is to Select the RIGHT advisor. Thesis option.
    No2 first secure the masters and then go for the phd.
    No3, make sure if you have Research assistant ship that your research for your thesis is the same with the assistanship provided from your advisor.
    No 4, high GPA does not necessarily means you are capable for research.

    Much of the feedback I received from my undergraduate was that I needed to stick to facts from journals and restrict my opinions. It was deeply frustrating and I felt like I was not allowed to apply thought. That frustration was evident in my grades; a pass that seemed almost grudging. I wanted more than that and completed a Masters during which I flourished. Why? Suddenly my thoughts were important and it felt like I was regarded as an equal rather than a kid who needs to be distracted away from the "adults".

    Watching this as I'm about to start my 2nd to last exam session before finishing my bachelor's degree. I'm honestly motivated primarily by grades, + with mental health being meh AF I'm really unsure whether to go for the masters. On the other end, in my country most people study for free, me included, and each (finished) year in academia leads to (on average) a 7% higher salary. So maybe I'll just try and tough out two more years.

    I think dropping out of high school at the age of 14 definitely helps me. I had to build my intellectual curiosity myself, I had to prepare myself for tests, I had to be self directed and without deadlines and exams, I didn't have to worry about anything. I was able to go down rabbit holes and learn anything I wanted! I was able to befriend actual researchers and academics in the fields I was interested in. Eventually, I did get into uni and am doing pretty well though I dislike the structure. Compared to me, other undergrads are very shy and full of self doubt and fear.
    I'm not saying this is the right move for everyone, but for me, school was just about stomping out my curiousity and controlling my behaviour. Even undergrad feels too much like it is holding my hand and trying to get me to pass exams. I did not flourish there whatsoever. Luckily, in UG I'm surrounded by amazing academics and I make sure to harass them as much as I can about their juicy juicy knowledge.

      I’m not a high school dropout, but I was a college dropout who eventually obtained a bachelor’s degree in my late 20’s. I share your feelings about the younger students and about the structure of undergraduate education. My experience with formal education in my life has been bad more often than good, although I did learn a lot during the last phase of being an undergrad. I only recently learned how being a grad student would be much different and much better for me than being an undergrad or a high school student ever was. So, I’m now in my mid-30’s and about to apply to grad schools. I know that I have what it takes, emotionally and intellectually, to earn a PhD. Getting admitted will depend on whether the people making those decisions consider information about me beyond my low GPA.

  • @pak8208
    @pak8208 Před rokem +7

    Sometimes it sounds very unfair when people just to motivates students with low GPA kinda unknowingly insult students with good GPA. It doesn't seems right to demotivate one group just to motivate the other group. People need to realise students put effort in getting good GPA. Now if later on they don't succeed there can be number of different reasons and one of them is the failure of educational model....

      @30803080308030803081 Před rokem +1

      I disagree. Some students are much more motivated by learning than by grades. There are many cases of students with GPA’s less than 3.0 who learned more than students with GPA’s greater than 3.5.

      @pak8208 @30803080308030803081 I think you both have a point. The people who have high GPAs work hard and deserve them. Both people with high and low GPAs can miss the whole point of school and not learn what they need for their careers. Also, there are excellent students who have low GPAs because of they do not have support.

    Andy, I'm waiting to start my PhD programme next year, maybe July. What do people like me usually get up to in the meantime? I've been rejected by many jobs and frankly don't have expertise in other fields other than theoretical physics. This is Malaysian job market. Banks, etc don't bother with you if you're not doing finance, etc. So I decided to take up coding bootcamps. What do you think?

      @@popisfornoobs In America, we have a degree called an associates degree which is earned in 2 years. Those are pretty useless outside of technical degrees, things like becoming an X-ray or ultrasound technician, or a dentist assistant. Our Bachelors is a 4 year degree and it’s what most college graduates have. A Masters takes an additional year or two after a Bachelors.
