    I love this. I've been a professor for over 25 years and am on the other side of 60 years old, and the other day I caught myself thinking "in another year or two I might have this academic thing figured out." I think it's OK to say that we have it figured out well enough to keep doing it, even if we don't have all the answers.

    That bit about undergrad and grades being meaningless is really nice to hear right now. I'm in the middle of applying to grad school for my masters and I really didn't get my act together in my undergrad until the last year so my GPA was not exactly stellar. I've grown a lot as a person in the 5 years since I've graduated with my bachelor's and I think my work shows it, but I am just terrified that my grades won't let me get in the door with a 3.007 GPA.

    Hi Andy,
    I have been following your videos now for almost two years, and I wanted to say a big thank you for all the time you spent on keeping graduate students informed about what is really going on in academia.
    Now, I should admit I would not have been able to stay in my PhD program without the help I received by watching your fantastic videos. Thank you again and please keep making these videos! 👏😅🙏

    Back at it with another great video! Been enjoying the consistent uploads these days 😊 You’re exactly right about professors and PhDs just winging it and having no idea what we are doing haha. You figure it out with time, but it’s what I wish I knew when starting my PhD! This is something I try to remember when imposter syndrome starts creeping up on me. Everyone’s just showing up each day and doing their best!

    A friend of mine worked in a reseachgroup of a hospital and he had one such assholes as head researcher, the dude basically exploited grads and undergrads by taking credit for all the work they did and presenting it as his own. At one point he decided to use some data that a grad was working on for a paper of his own without letting anyone know,. What he failed to check was the security level that was put on that data for various reasons, mostly privacy regulations. so long story short the data management team eventually found an very major data leak that was traced back to the asshole. Turned out he had "unknowingly" been leaking data for years undermining a substanclial amount of research that had been done. Which turned into a massive internal investigation. The dude was eventually fired for a number of reasons including privacy leaks, forgery of research data and a number of copyright and IP issues. safe to say he will not be working in hospitals for a good while. what goes around, comes around. xd

      @DSScully Před rokem +4

      Absolutely incredulous that you would even do that. The discrimination against us as individuals who have Asperger's Syndrome is *VERY * real. You just demonstrated the highest level of privilege and patronizing nonsense to dismiss and devalue my experiences as a disabled woman.
      The amount of unkindness you have knowingly demonstrated speaks volumes about the arrogance and lack of awareness and understanding of these issues.

    • @francishunt562
      @francishunt562 Před rokem +1

      @@DSScully You're welcome. If someone is on a PhD or masters, then (hopefully), they are on that course on merit. Doesn't matter if you have a disability or not. A person shouldn't get a place through race, religion, or indeed disability. They get on the course because they are good. Stop making excuses and deal with it.

    • @DSScully
      @DSScully Před rokem

      @@francishunt562 you are incredibly arrogant and disrespectful. Knock it off.
      Deligitimizing other people's experiences simply because you have never experienced is the height of arrogant.
      If your attitude is prevalent in academia, no doubt that is why you think that ADA violations are acceptable. They're not. They are illegal. This includes in higher education.
      Am I surprised at your attitude. Not at all. It's quite typical. Treating people with disabilities, as you are expressing here, like shit, is a demonstration of your character. Shame on you.
      Especially if you consider yourself a professional. "Deal with it " and start acting like a professional.

    Hey! Im a Masters student and am doing my research in Immunology . I'm applying to PhD programs right now and it feels really forbidding, especially as an international student.
    I was feeling down about my project because I don't feel confident that I'll be able to give it direction past what my supervisor thinks I should do and would be a good idea. I want to conduct research that is my own but am scared that I won't be able to bear the responsibility for the failures that will inevitably come from it.
    The advice in this video hasn't fully sunken in yet, but I hope when it does it feel more comfortable taking the reigns with my project.

    So true. Got my undergrad awhile back. Worked a couple of years. Originally didn't think I was smart enough for grad school so I went to get another BA @ college (what USA calls community college) instead of university after 2 terms was like I can't deal with college BA rn. My brain wasn't stimulated (I think it's mainly due go my ADHD side) but during this time I was like I know what I'm doing in a sense but also it's been awhile so uhhh what?.
    But fall 2022 going into grad school part time I'm like what am I doing again??
    So relatable.
    I don't remember which video you mentioned about reasons why phd students don't finish.... trust me but literally half, if not more, of the points you made have crossed my mind after one term lol and I'm doing well after that one course last term. I'm still interested in what I'm studying but it's also tiring and working full time while going to school ain't fun

    Here is a mental tip dealing with A holes, I picked up at military school. A rather masculine and competitive environment. If people are being an A hole towards you. Ask yourself this: Does your opposition (doesnt need to be direct, can even be indirect for prestige etc etc) like you? Because if they do, then you might be doing something wrong. If you think like that, you will expect some people to be A holes and just take it as a sign you are doing well rather than "internalize it". Of course, if I am a Nato soldier, having the Russian military "love me" would be an indicator of something wrong, but the same could be said about that A hole that was very nice to you,... because you shared your work with him in a manner that allowed him to take everything just before the finish line and claim all the glory while sidelining you. Or the A hole that hates you, calls you insults all the time, because you are hot on hes tail, he knows it and tries to psych you out or is just desperate and scared.
    Note: That this tip in regards to people that are both successful and A holes. Not the village idiot that is just an A hole because he dosent know any better.
    09:15 is what you should NOT do. Because just listen to what he is really saying here. Pity the one that will take all the glory. Hes only doing it because,... he has personal problems, he gets all the glory though. No, being an "A hole" is often a "office politics" tactic and by hes own words, it works. The just "pity them" cope is just a self rationalization. Not saying one should be picking "side quest" fights in context of people doing something that doesnt affect you at all, but one shouldnt take the long road ether because an A hole is "blocking your way".

    As a PhD student researching a topic, you stand a chance to win a Nobel prize, it is just that you have to tread super extreme careful because your research supervisor is lurking nearby to pounce on you, in an instant, to steal your research work and ideas. He can steal your work, dispose of you with his toxicity and pass on your work to his favourite PhD student or a PostDoc.
