Yup definitely doesn't sexualize the female body either.. by entirely conforming to it and showing your entire body shape..only difference is less skin is openly exposed.. however another comment made a solid point the whole point for the leotards and why men are always sleeveless is entirely about showing off peak physique of the body for men it's primarily upper body strength for women it's lower body strength...
Though it's gymnastics not body building..

They do it to because they have too not to show their “leg strength” and I think full body pants are much more appropriate then something that’s no less then an inch away from seeing your 🐱 if theirs even an inch. Then theirs children’s gymnastics too idek who in their right mind would let a child do that in front of people (idk if they wear the same uniforms as children tho but if they do it should definitely be changed)

I completely agree with you. As a student of gymnastics in the mid 90s and the 2000s.
I found it very uncomfortable, and I was incredibly self-conscious to be wearing a revealing outfit from the age of 11 right up until 16.
Also, I was constantly worried about my menstrual flow when performing in front of people.

Exactly. We women in the audience feel for you. They should wear the full bottoms they used to make for dance class when you wanted to wear your choice of top rather than 1 piece leotards. And have boy shorts as an option. The leotards of today are soooosheer and they ride up the butt--guys watch these vids just to ogle the girls and women. A tampon string could hang out so easily. And the waxing required for pre-teens and young teens is obscene. But as a minimum, they need to use a thicker fabric and fuller cut. And the boy shorts could be worn over the leotard for practice and when modesty is desired.

@cyninbend not to mention how heavily sexualised these sports and anything artistic like ballet, contemporary dance (if including such outfits) or even beach sports(!), swimsuits too are... if they gave women the choice on the outfit instead and/or made it so everyone regardless of sex or gender had a choice in that perhaps some people would feel more comfortable performing.
Even some ballet studios, for example, will give you the choice of attending classes with shorts on top of leotards in the bottom half (and in performances, there are tutus of course, depending on what it is) and honestly save for perhaps some performances here where you have to jump over obstacles (e.g. vault) I honestly don't see why they're so excessively sheer in material or tight, other than for the sake of sexualising women's bodies. There's a difference between confidence and sexualisation and I feel like with the outfits it's explicitly for the sake of some unmentioned fanswrvice, especially because there will be creeps as old as these performers' grandparents or relatives.

As a person who swam competitively and had swimsuits almost every day, there’s a lot of drawbacks that aren’t obvious if you’re not wearing them yourself in sports. For example, you have to shave every 2-3 days, and the fabric from the suit glides against the skin in a very sensitive area when you’re doing sports, so everyday you’re trying to reduce and manage razor burns. And it actually distracts you while you’re competing. I’m not saying leotards and swimsuits are exactly the same, but I bet there’s a lot of commonality.

Water polo is worse. I think something like a skin tight wetsuit would be safer because girls will stick their hands inside your suit to grab and pull you down. The suits are so tight (exactly to prevent this) that they ride up to your waist making it easier to reach. It's brutal in there. Plus I have seen pervert edits of competitions on youtube while looking to study skills.

I just appreciate being able to see an athlete's muscle structure.. but you can definitely do that with shorts just fine. sometimes it just takes time to modernize things with a long history of tradition, but I'm glad they're catching up though.

      @mockingjay478 Před rokem +217

@@jillybeangamingThe reason they're sexual is because you can see everything short of the labia themselves. Contestants have to use hairspray or similar just to keep their cheeks from showing. It's sexual because straight men watch it HOPING for a wardrobe malfunction exposing women's bodies. The odds of that also being much higher than men in their shorts or tights, as well as being a much more severe exposure, since this is their only layer covering them, while men usually have underwear under their shorts or tights.

I’m not and here’s why…. *While I don’t think that leos are inherently sexist, however being FORCED to wear them as the only option is, especially all the high hip cut/cheeky leos in gymnastics. You don’t see much of that in ballet. Most are low cut on the hips. I DISAGREE full suits should NOT be allowed, it’s harder to see all movements/form esp when you WANT TO HAVE ALL SKILLS/TWISTS SEEN & GRADED APPROPRIATELY(unless your goal is fudging scores!) and I’m sure harder for spotters to make fast corrections(a leg could become an arm in an instant leading to falls, paralysis and possibly DEATH) esp when you’re doing hardcore moves that require great speed such as w/simone biles. I do NOT want her getting hurt because no one can see what she’s doing as the full suit would just all blend together. Also grading on technicality, but shorts should be allowed! Seeing the legs allows for better grading. There’s a reason why tights tend to be nude color in dance/ballet so lines can be seen. Same for gymnastics. Now do I think full suits should be given as an option for say women’s volleyball or swimming? Yep! Again the issue is both choice and being fair in grading/safety.*

I mean, then maybe color them brightly and distinguish the legs from the rest at the joint, etc. No one is demanding they wear a unicolor black suit.

You mention men’s gymnastics, BUT women’s gymnastics is a whole separate sport basically. I just don’t want any issues with safety and as a the viewer/judge it may get a bit difficult to see the best. I’m with you though, cheeky leos are mind boggling to me how that even became a thing which seems sexist as the only option. It’s pure insanity! “Tradition” is the answer given by people not smart enough to articulate the real reason. You can find the real reason by asking a related question:
Why are men’s uniforms almost always sleeveless, while women’s often have sleeves?
And if you correctly answer that one, you’ll correctly answer the leotard question.
I’ll spare you the brain hemorrhage generated by thinking beyond surface level thought. It’s because part of gymnastics is about glorifying the human form. As the male athlete archetype is one of rippling shoulder muscles, cut biceps and tremendous upper body strength, their uniforms will usually be sleeveless to expose their arms and shoulders. As the female athlete archetype is one muscled thighs, cut calf muscles, and tremendous lower body strength and balance, their uniforms will usually be legless to expose their legs.
So, it’s not simply “tradition,” it’s the reason behind the tradition: glorifying the form of the superior human athlete.

I grew really tall really quickly (I'm now 168.4cm, super tall considering my aunt, who competed in artistic internationally, is 4'7"). I have really, really pale skin and ginger hair and I got bullied really badly in my academy, because my thighs are so pale you can see veins everywhere. Having to show your crotch area with only a thin, narrow band of plastic between you and the possibility off inadvertently flashing everyone as you do a handstand and anything that involves splitting one's legs, in front of hundreds of people when you are only 13 and have barely entered puberty was.... difficult and, in many ways, pretty upsetting. Fencing was so completely different (I was the only girl in my coach's cohort) as you are completely covered. Gave me a lot of confidence in myself and just focus on what you're doing and your goals instead of this constant and unerasable self-conciousness that gym always gave me.... well, when I finally dropped gym altogether to devote 5 days a week training for fencing I barely missed gym 😅
