for whats it worth man id take the valve covers off and look under there. make sure the valves are opening and shutting when they should and all the way. could be a broken rocker or bent push rod. your right it sounds like the timings out but idk how the pushrods go to the lifters then to the cam so i dont think there is a chain to jump. let us know what you find.
For brother..my next step is to check it the timing is off..or even the module could be faulty/shorten to ground..if these checks ok..then forsure topend coming off...never pulled HD topend so hoping its can be done easily without pulling the motor.
