It’s shrimp time!
We’ve been getting a lot of questions about using live shrimp to catch fish in the shallows, so I recently went out and documented this adventure where I caught redfish, snook, snapper, and sheepshead all on live shrimp.
In this video you'll learn:
- The best spots to use live shrimp (look for these 3 things)
- How to rig live shrimp for more strikes
- Pro tips on catching more fish with live shrimp
Have any questions about using live shrimp in the shallows?
Let me know in the comments below!

You're a very good caster. I would have been paddling over to pull my hook from the mangroves every other cast.
If you could teach Otis to handle a rod and reel, you'd never go hungry. He has passion!
FACTS!
I love how excited the dog gets when you catch a fish...lol
Now all of a sudden i feel like calling in sick so i can go fishing
Yes
The boat at the far end of the cut: "He's caught another fish... and ANOTHER... and... that's it. I'm going home!"
I don't blame you Otis, I love fishing too.🐾
Otis makes my day 🤣!!! Thanks for another great video Luke and SaltStrong team! Live shrimp works the best this time of year.
I caught my fish sheepshead at Atlantic City jetty this year. Made for a great video. First time fishing on the jetty and land a huge Sheepshead.
Haha Otis LOVES snook! He really seems to know the difference.
I agree... he seems to go extra crazy when snook are on the line.
Hey Otis 🐕
You too Luke 👋
Perfect first cast.
Great plan for fishing that cut! Beautiful day out there!
Thanks for your videos guys!
Thanks, I really love Otis's enthusiasm!!!!! 💘
love the dog, gets so jacked up on the fish coming in, reminds me of some dogs i used to duck hunt with up here in michigan. you would say "DUCKS" they would drop there heads, and just run their eyes up watching them lock into decoys., you would drop a few, and they would just stare at you til you gave them the "GO GET EM" happiest dogs ever!
Outstanding video!
Very informative and well narrated. I especially enjoyed watching the popping cork/bobber as a reference point to your tutorial. Nicely done.
Thanks for the kind words Gary!
Don't get to fish Florida to often but enjoy your vids, good info that can be used anywhere.. Dogs are good for your soul and taking him w/you is good for his! Tight Lines.
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment!
Great video thanks for sharing your time with your buddy.
Your casting accuracy is incredible.
Agreed !
Thanks for the video. You do a great job narrating.
Thank you!
The best thing I leaned from this is THAT’S A GOOD BOY. WHO’S A GOOD BOY?!?!!
Haha, your dog is a total trip. Keep bringing him!
Wow that was a fun video and Otis sure is a good fisher pup to.
the dog knows when he hooks a fish amazing
Pa-POW! Good stuff, Luke
Great video, I have always said alive is much better, its nice to see you did the comparison. Awesome
Awesome video so many tips 👍🔥🔥
A small point of interest that makes a big difference and would like to have that ability. you are right handed and therefore reel with your left. But your ability to cast from left of your body, with accuracy, is awesome. Most like me have to cast from the right side of the body. Again, a small yet big detail makes you a well rounded fisherman.I’m gonna practice that all it is😊 thanks for the video
Thank you for the live bait tips using 🦐
Shrimp is the sauce in our part of the gulf catches everything
Thanks for the nice comment!
I love the dog being excited with the fish coming 😂😂
Otis is always excited to go fishing!
I like how your dog is right by your side.
It helps to know that I'm not the only one losing Snook near the boat.
We saw you loose it OK. Looks like you buy your shrimp at the same place I do. The Baby Shrimp Place. Well it's good to see someone really fishing instead of just catching... Thaks for that. Dog is cracking me up. Love that he's so excited. Ha, there was a big boil behind you when you were unhooking that nice snapper. You had some really nice casts back in there. Great job fishing that cut.
Should do a video on your setup ! Would love to see what gear you fish with ! Thanks
Me too!
Great video and Otis Strong!!!
Thanks Pablo!
Great tips !!
Thanks Rick!
The best part is Otis! What a fun dog, he is having as much fun as you.
Glad to see that you enjoyed this video! Otis starts getting excited every time he hears the word "fishing".
@@Saltstrong Can't believe Otis didn't end up in the drink, lol
@@44tug Me too... he had a few close calls, but fortunately stayed dry that trip.
10/10 best content. Good fishing instruction AND Otis??
Everything is better with Otis!! Thanks for watching!
Great video Luke! Shout out to Otis for riding the rail on the way out!
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment Scot! Otis loves riding the rail... I can't get him to stand anywhere else:)
Salt Strong Thanks for the great videos, How old is Otis?I have a chocolate lab that has no chance of staying on the boat lol
Good stuff!💪🎣🐶
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment Sean!
Hey Luke. Great video! What is the thought process of using the popping cork vs free lining the shrimp? I'm guessing to keep the shrimp off the bottom. Does free lining shrimp (no split shot) sink too quickly to the bottom?
You cast very accurately with the spinning reel. I have trouble with accuracy and need to practice more. Maybe you can do a video on tips for casting??
Here's a link to a helpful casting video in case you haven't seen it yet: www.saltstrong.com/articles/dart-cast-tutorial/
Otis is the star of this show. :D
He just wants a treat damn it!! lol love it
Great video, really enjoying the channel so far. I have a question thought, how do you choose a good spot to fish a new area in the backcountry if you havent been there before? I'm going to a new area which I'm not familiar with fishing wise and would like to have some ideas. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Neil! To find good spots, I use online maps along with a structured approach to knowing what types of areas to seek out based on the season, tides, wind speed/direction, etc... all of which is taught in the online courses that everyone gets for free simply for joining the Insider Fishing Club: www.saltstrong.com/pricing/
Great video Luke what type of tackle were you using as far as the rod and reel combination
Great video.
Thanks Harley!
Nice nursery slam lol
Thanks! The nursery shrimp are apparently great at catching nursery slams:)
Exactly why I don’t bring my dog fishing anymore 😂😑
Yeah Otis needs a time-out! LOL!
Luke, this is by far my favorite video you’ve done. Every step detailed, straightforward and so informative. This was as pure a fishing video I’ve seen.
Great job.
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment!
Don’t let Otis get that hook.
Good to see Otis... :-)
Great fishing Vlog and location wish we had mangrove waters like these in Texas i am assuming u r in Florida waters
Did anyone mention the big blow up to your left our right in the video at 13:27
If you continue to watch he catches the last keeper in that area
13:27 fish in the water 🤣 🤣 🤣
Loe how your dog knows when you caught something. I'm new to your channel. Does your dog go with you fishing often?
Great info and techniques. Question: Have you tried the weed less, bullet sinker in this senerio? In the lagoon I fish, the current is wind driven, opposite of what was in this video. In my kayak, should I travel down or up a cut like this one you were in? Otis ever fall in while you brought a fish in? He's a beautiful Lab..
I would like to know how you were working the line while letting it flow with current, was that open bail and quick reaction to hook the fish?
Make sure you bring the dog or I won’t watch! Great video fun to watch and learn
I'm a crappie fisherman this helps because I use live bait.
👍👏
Also your brother helped me alot on one of his videos about *ANXIETY*
I am very glad to see that you enjoyed this live shrimp fishing video and that Joe's anxiety video helped you out too. Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment. Tight Lines!
Salt Strong guys are great best how to for Florida
The best
Think you’re gonna have to start leaving Otis home for his own safety lol great video keep up the good work man
Dogs can also get sunburn
With how many fish he catches, he’s probably only on the water for an hour 😅😭
@@danielstarr9037 if you had watched the video, he said he was out there 3 hours. 😂😂😂
85 year old fisherman. ADVICE. Wear a life jacket. Know several folks drowned falling over . Why tempt fate? 🐻
Think the popping cork is inhibiting your hook sets. Popping corks are fine if that's part of the presentation, otherwise I would prefer a light weighted cigar shaped cork. I believe there's less resistance to the line movement.
What is that pole you used to anchor yourself in place?
What size cork are you using and is it weighted or unweighted?
nice!
Thanks!
Just wanted to let you know what i do to keep the shrimp alive on those hot trips. I use frozen water bottles and stick them in the live well to keep the water colder and it makes the shrimp more lively as well.
Yes, that is a very smart way to keep bait much more lively on a hot summer day.
But remember to use saltwater for that, as the shrimp could die
Did anyone else see that blow up at 13:25 to the right
Thanks for checking it out!
4 out of 5 I'd be casting into the trees!
Question, when using the bobber do you try to have the bait a certain distance below the surface or a certain distance off the bottom? Thanks
Every day is different. But the most feeding happens near the bottom so I try to get it as close to the bottom as possible without getting snagged.
What are the three best lures in your opinion for trout snook and reds
The lure featured in this video is my #1 favorite all round (www.saltstrong.com/articles/catching-inshore-fish-on-artificials/) because it can be effective in pretty much all water clarities and core depth zones. The other two would be situational based on the type of area that I'm fishing (depth, current, type of structure, etc.)
Would like to see inshore Texas fishing in Galveston, Freeport, Matagorda, Corpus Christi & Port Mansfield.
We have multiple detailed spot dissections from all of those areas (and more) in our Insider Club platform, so I recommend giving it a shot if you're interested in catching more redfish, specks, and flounder. I'm planning to make a trip over that way this spring, so we'll be posting some public videos in CZcams from TX waters soon.
Otitis loves fishing
He sure does!
Your snapper look like our mangrove jack here in Australia
Yes, I have seen some Australian fishing videos where the mangrove jacks were caught and thought how similar they look to our mangrove snappers:)
Maggot, not waisted sorry, wasted is American for being drunk
How do you set up your line?
Hey bud, was that a size 1 in a circle hook? Or what size did you use on the poppin cork?
Great question! Make sure to ask this over in the Community (www.saltstrong.com/) where the coaches spend their time.
What kind of anchor is that ?
Great video. To many concentrate on the big catches
Thanks!
didnt heard maybe. how deep is on that fishing spot?
Does Otis remind anyone else of Old Yeller.
True!
Odis wants to retrieve those fish so bad.
He sure did:)
I like Otis!
We love Otis!
Give Otis a rod-n-reel 👍 he can help.
Otis the dog hit the dog lotto.
Where were you fishing.
Otis has been eating sushi.
Bigger fish jumped as you were bringing in your second snapper.
What size hooks were you using?
Size 1 or 1/0 hooks
Lol Otis wanted eat dat snapper bad
That snapper?
How much cost for this boat?
How many times have you hooked Otis? He's jumping at hooks and your not training him.
The most impressive thing on the video is Otis stays in the boat. I have goldens and all they do is jump in.
I wish I could say that he always stays in the boat... here's a trip where he was causing all sorts of trouble: www.saltstrong.com/fishing-tip/clearwater-fishing-report/
Have you ever hooked your dog while bringing the line in?
No. I have been very careful to keep him out of trouble out there. Here's a link to see more videos with him in case you'd like to see more: www.saltstrong.com/article_categories/otis/
Does Otis like to sit on the dock of the bay?
He sure does!
Man, I wish I had somewhere with no current like that...
doggo want to be hooked
Otis gets pretty excited on the boat 🤣🤣
Anyone see the fish jump 13:27
I wonder if I’m the only one who wish he would of made the dog get out of his way.
That's what she said.
