You can try it. It's just industrial lego and as long as you have some kind of process you follow it really helps in the beginning. Same as the process of laying everything out before you start cooking so that you know you have everything. (Ians process is to do away with much of the process though and thats entertaining).

I did an engine/gearbox change on my Dyane in the street in Headingley in October 1977. I converted it from 435 to 602. I had hoped just to change the engine, but for some reason the 602 engine didn't match the 435 gearbox, so I obtained a 2 cv gearbox from a Scrap yard in Rotherham. Then I found the brake pipes on the new gearbox didn't match the old pipework so I had to drill out the 4 way (or was it three way) junction fitting to get it to work. It worked and the car was much improved with the extra HP and torque.

You are just a hero, specially changing motor / gear box of a Dyane who is less practical - and in the street ! I swapped a 602 cc for a 425cc with centrifugal clutch and gearbox in a bitter cold windblown shed and at the end of the evening...the gimball transmission shafts did not match ! I had to WALK away... welcome to the club !

Completely understand spending more time looking for tools etc than actually fixing the car! I think that's part of the attraction of this channel - I don't really identify with someone with professional tools (ramp, airline on tap, machine tools etc) who's idea of a 'quick fix' is well beyond my skill level ("we just quickly knocked up up this widget on the lathe"). You show the true home mechanic - and are honest about not maintaining cars as much as you should (think many are guilty of this but would not admit it!).

Don’t apologize... your garage experiences are so much like my own that I can relate completely, hence the appeal. We can’t all be Project Binky, and that’s just fine with me. You remarked about the accessibility of the 2CV engine; I concur. After years of digging into the dark recesses of my MG Midget, I installed a rebuilt engine in a friend’s Triumph Spitfire, with the bonnet removed. What a difference. The front tires even provide seating while fiddling with engine bits. Luxury.

Cracking tinkering video, shows your knowledge of tin snails is indeed deep.
Old cars aren't really unreliable, possibly a bit temperamental and you could do way more PM but it would still want repairing.
That's why we love them really, the thrill of completing a decent sized journey successfully.
But you've been able to take a comparitely large piece of your 2CV off with hand tools and in a shed.
A blown headlight bulb on a modern could entail bumper removal, letting a garage do it, then taking it to main dealer to have the fail fault indication reset.
At least you're in control of this repair. 👍

Oh goodness, another vehicle acting up!
It actually doesn't surprise me that the manifold developed a hole, many here in the US do it all the time, and I think I was guilty of that years ago! Now that you sorted out Foxann's exhaust issues, Elly decided to have a hissy fit, something in the road did some damage as well, and there you have it! And putting back what you took off to replace is disappointing, but not surprising, I think we have done that at one time or another!
Another item I noticed is Elly's front tyres are looking good, little wear, either from not being used much, a good front-end alignment, or a combination of both. I applaud you in that sense. Hoping your assistant will be able to help you after the New Year, it will make life a little easier, and hopefully you will get just a bit more organised!
Wishing you, Miss HubNut and family a very Happy Christmas!

Don't change Ian. If it wasn't all a bit wonky then it wouldn't be Hubnut. Replacing the wrong bit is part of the "joys" of home car repair. A couple of years ago one of the sons helped me replace the serpentine belt that I decided had failed on our Volvo XC70 which we had just sold and the new owners wanted to pick up. It took 7 hours with the wrong tools, working well into the night and cold and the problem was still there at the end. I sent it to a mechanic who found that a bolt had worked its way out of a pulley (apparently a common problem for that engine). Still an expensive pain to fix but a lot less work than our misadventures.

Hopefully the hernia is fixed quickly. Pain is not a good sign. If the pain becomes severe, off to A & E with you. The last thing you need is a strangulated hernia. That means an urgent bowel resection.

Those carb to manifold nuts are always 12mm and sometimes 13 (if they've been replaced), a crowfoot spanner job when the manifold is on the car! another strange nut size from Citroen internally/externally. Most important not to forget the spring washers underneath them as these have a habit of working themselves loose creating air leaks. For exhaust gaskets I recommend using the 'carbon fibre reinforced' gaskets from Ecas (£4 each?) as the rubbishy normal ones available now do have a habit of blowing out the side quite quickly. I also always use Holts exhaust assembly paste, it works :-) Always good seeing your videos Ian :-) Have a safe Christmas.

Watching your tinkering reminds me of weekends spent with my dad under my Opel Kadett. Indeed, aside from the obvious differences of accents and manufacturer, the vernacular is curiously similar.
The MCM guys ARE telly now, with a telly budget and editing. They're a different experience, and enjoyable in their own way. I don't have a workshop in an industrial estate with sponsored parts and tools. I have to borrow a shed and my tools come from the local equivalent to Poundland. If I can't fix it, I'm on the bus.
A £10,000 budget gets one past the moment of "How does THAT even break? It doesn't (very sweary word) MOVE!"

@@volvo480 funny you say that. My 1990 240 Estate decided to spit transmission fluid all over Hell's Half Acre. I got lucky, though. It was only a cooling line. $152 Canadian, about £75, and back in the road. Only 1 hour of labour. Could have done it myself, but I was not about to be rolling around in a foot of snow at -10 degrees with a stiff breeze.

I like how if something goes wrong with the 2cv or any car you car about you fix it like this video tearing half the engine out to fix the situation but when you have brought the other 2 project cars you’ve not done anything. A few fail videos out trying to get them started. Instead of them out and cleaned and even take the engines out to help access to try and get them running. Please bring back hubnut the one who did the fox project. Bring him back for 2021!
