- Sound of fife & drums heard at the Wheatfield at sunset in Gettysburg. Other than the occasional passing car, we were alone. We followed the intermittent sounds but could not find anyone nor locate the source of the music, always ahead of us. Amateur video with the sounds of walking, talking, passing cars and a plane. 7/7/11
The drumming gets louder around 7:40 and at that point you can definitely hear the fifes too - amazing, simply amazing
We were amazed too. We kept walking because the music was always ahead of us, we kept thinking we would run into a reenactment band, so we kept walking and recording, only stopping when it was too dark & too rocky to walk further. It was sometimes louder, sometimes softer, but always ahead of us.

This was my first time using a video camera, my daughter's. I was on vacation, visiting the battlefield that evening with my daughter when I heard the sound of fife & drums, called my daughter, who was sitting in the car. We began recording, walking, looking for the source. I am a nurse, mom, not trying to fool anyone. You can believe it or not. We never found the 'source' or explanation, which is why I didn't label it 'paranormal'. I don't know for certain what it is. It was strange, however.
GETTYSBURG IS THE MOST HAUNTED PLACE IN THE WORLD THIS IS AN EXAMPLE. CLASSIC .
I've heard noises in the Wheatfield on two occasions:
1. After the Remembrance Day parade, I visited there around 6:30pm when it was dark and heard footsteps walking next to me. It sounded like someone in heavy boots trampling among the wheat grasses. I checked around, and there was no one there.. When I would walk, they would and when I would stop, they would stop shortly after. It wasn't animals. As a reenactor, I know the sound of brogans and that's what it sounded like. I was also dressed in my uniform due to the parade. Not sure if that had anything to do with the activity.
2. I visited the Wheatfield around 9pm this past summer with my family and heard cannon fire and musketry. Again.. it was at night when there were no scheduled reenactment battles taking place.
It's not odd to hear such sounds. I've heard similar stories from other reenactors.
I try to visit the Wheatfield whenever I'm in Gettysburg. I feel very much at peace when I'm there and go to pay respects to those who fought and gave their lives for what they believed in.

Gettysburg is great for paranormal. at three in the morning I heard cannons going off that woke me.
I was on the union side of pickets charge and we kept seeing lights flashing. Where The cannons where we later went back there and there was nobody there but our headlights on a car kept turning on and off for no apparent reason
I have personally heard this at manassas battlefield - nearly the EXACT same as this. No re-enactors, nobody.
First time I ever used the video function on camera. We were so certain it was reenactors, I expected to find a group behind each clump of trees! Each time we found none, it became more eerie. After 30 min of walking & having sounds always just ahead of us & never seeing a soul, we really started wondering-could this be paranormal? It was like they were marching ahead of us. I guess we'll never know for sure either way. We have talked with reenactors who had even more amazing experiences!
I can believe this. At one point when they went down the fence a little more into the Tree line closest to the rode I thought the whistle or flute and drums were extremely close by. But then they kept moving down the fence line and it was gone. I think if they would have set the camera on one spot and just sat back quietly and wait the ghostly regiment would have marched toward them. Most likely smokelike in color. But the fact that you can recognize the music is fun. I would have sung along to it.
Completely agreed. This is what most refer to as residual "hauntings" But that is a misnomer. The word residual itself defines it as not an actual "spirit" of a person, rather a environmental "replay" if you would.
And we dismiss the existence of the soul...

I just got back from a trip here with my husband..he was off looking for a marker of where his Great Great Granddad had fought...and I was here alone taking photos...I started to walk into the middle of the field and felt out of nowhere just the sense that I shouldn't be there. I hadn't felt it anywhere else in the park...just the wheatfield.
It is possible that events of such magnitude especially those charged with every conceivable human emotion along with the death, destruction and bloodletting would expend incredible amounts of energy absorbed by the earth and rocks, retaining a memory as such, releasing fragments when certain environmental conditions are just right. Energy does not cease to be but changes form.
Such a horrible war...........residual sounds lasting an eternity. A war that shouldn't have happened. Really horrible day in history...........forever drumming, forever dying.
I watched a reenactment at Fort Davidson here in Missouri and during the reenactment I kept hearing a cannon fire though I couldn't see one. I asked everyone in the area "Where's the cannon? I hear it but I don't see it". They all looked at me in amazement and the man next to me said "You hear all sort of things at these reenactments. That's just someone who doesn't know it's over and is fighting along". I didn't believe it but I couldn't come up with a logical explanation either.
Ozark mama That's pretty awesome. Yeah with so many living Men dressed like the actual soldiers that fought and died for real, I'm sure the Ghosts don't know it's a reenactment and think their coming to join the fight with their brothers. WOW!
Think about it 50 000 casualties in 3 days in a small area something lingers on.
Col. Joshua Chamberlain, 20th Maine, had similar thoughts: "On great fields, something stays. Forms change and pass, bodies disappear, but spirits linger, to consecrate ground for the vision place of souls."

And, indeed, while the definition of 'casualties' has not changed over time, some sources place the number higher. To say that Gettysburg July 1863 and for a considerable period thereafter was a place of tremendous emotion, suffering & carnage would not be an understatement.
***** Based on diaries, when the armies left, the citizens (mostly women, children, elderly) were left with the unimaginable aftermath: thousands of unburied dead soldiers, rotting horses, care of the wounded/dying, farms & fields scattered with unexploded shells & children playing with them-many deaths, injuries, indescribable stench as far as a mile outside of town; the citizens had to deal with an immediate need for quite some time, until help trickled in, along with the steady stream of sight-seers, grieving families, looters. The ongoing war outside of the town seemed far away compared with the overwhelming scenes of daily misery.

Without sounding too "Doc", it's like a fissure in the veil that separates a zero point plane. Like every moment in what we consider time is a different point on flat plane separated by an invisible barrier separating them. Possibly a event of that magnitude and violence the container or veil was ripped and is constantly playing out as if it was real time.
+Stroker Ace: Actually, since the soldiers of The American Revolution played "Yankee Doodle", and the soldiers on the Union side were fighting to preserve the very same country those of The Revolution started, it's quite concievable that the Union side might have played the song from time to time going into battle to remind the troops of what they were fighting for, and to bolster their courage. Those were much more nostalgic times than now.

When visiting the Wheatfield it almost feels like time is standing still. It's hard to explain. I know when I'm there...usually at night once a year after the Remembrance Day parade and dressed up in my uniform) I don't feel scared at all. Though I definitely feel presences around me (cold spots, static electricity feelings etc), it's a sense of longing to be there and melancholy.. the strangest thing to happen soundwise was a spirit calling out to me by my actual name on a digital recorder while I was walking through the field. Anyway.. the Wheatfield is very special and hallow ground.
Our family has camped in Gettysburg for many summers & feel drawn there. Despite its history it has a peaceful feel. We visit to learn & honor those who have given the last full measure of devotion. So many stories! 5 yrs ago our youngest, then 9, saw wounded soldiers/fighting, only becoming upset when no one else saw it. I told her she may have been given a gift for showing respect. You no doubt have received this same gift.
It was around sunset July, 2011. It was a weekday, so not that crowded. There were reenactors in town, but we didn't see any on the battlefield that night. I should have checked with the Park Service the next day to see if any had been scheduled that night!

We thought the same thing, walked all along Wheatfield Road looking for anyone, until it was too dark. Since the music seemed so close, just ahead of us, we kept walking thinking we would find a reenactor band! Even after we stopped recording, we still heard the sounds, so we drove around, never saw anyone. It was a warm humid night, so there is the possibility of sound traveling from a distance. I am pretty skeptical, but I suppose this wouldn't be the most unusual sound ever heard there!
I originally just wanted to send this to friends in an email, but it was too long to send. I am not that savvy. I needed my kids help as I have never uploaded anything to youtube before or since. As I mentioned, I used one of my kids' cameras, so I don't do videos. It was only a way to send it to family and friends. As it turned out it took several hours to upload. I love Gettysburg. We've been there many summers, but I usually take pics only.
We went to see the battlefield for the first time, two years ago. Husband's GGGdad had served on Union side. I was fine till we got to this section, he was looking at something else, and I went to start walking towards the monument (it was dusk), and I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand up, and I KNEW I should not continue in this area in particular. I didn't...
The drum playing without the fifes sound like assembly calls.

I don't know how much time you've spent in Gettysburg Gary, but, it seems you are going to reenactors by default. While there are re-enactments at Gettysburg, actors are not generally found playing around on the battlefields. They are controlled events and their presence can be verified by rangers. Also, at sunset, the park closes. Any re-enactors on the battlefield would not be sanctioned actors and would be removed from the field. Gettysburg has plenty of homegrown eyes.
Yea. The snare drums at the 8:33 mark sound like they are just about 50 feet away.Notice the time of day. The sun has just set and the fire flies are out. The same time in the evening as when the Underwoods filmed the ghosts walking behind the rock in Triangle Field. There just something about this time of the day that seems to bring out the spirits.
As I've mentioned, we looked for reenactors both walking & driving-couldn't find any, few people out that nite; also agreed that music can carry-just couldn't find the source. While not proclaiming this to be a paranormal occurrence, I am open minded. Many would disagree with your statement, as there are few absolutes. Even Col. Joshua Chamberlain wrote of the Gettysburg battlefield as a place where 'forms change & pass, bodies disappear but spirits linger...a vision place of souls'.

Do you mean the restarting of the sound (fife/drums) at 7:40? Honestly, it wasn't scary, but fascinating. Just me & my 11 y/o daughter. At first we were certain it was a band & wanted to find the source; the sounds kept wafting away from us, sometimes louder, then softer, sometimes they would stop, but always just ahead of us. The farther we walked not finding anyone the more fascinating it became! I'm pretty skeptical, but the longer it went on, the more I wondered: could this be what I think it is? It was energizing, not creepy.
yeh you most certainly captured something special here the drums would not be any further than the tree line near that monument about 6 to 800 metres away roughly . Theres clearly no one out in the distance VERY INTERESTING.
You might need headphones and the volume way up to hear it but, who is saying "Yankees won!!" at 9:19? Again at 9:20. It seems as though the only one there filming is a mother with her child. Perhaps that's her child saying it. Is that a voice saying "I did mine!!" at 5:28? Did he mean he did his part in fighting for what he believed was right? Yankee Doodle at 2:52 is awesome!! I hear "Hey pal, my name's Pat" at 6:52. Once again you might need headphones and listen to it a couple of times to hear it. I hear "Miller at 9:16-9:17 and "Macintosh" at 9:18. "Hit at 9:20. "It's ok" at 9:23. I think possibly I hear "Ammo" at 9:29-9:30. It sounds like we are there with them. I do hope you do your best to hear what I'm hearing here. I find it very interesting. Without headphones and the volume turned way up I think you will have a hard time hearing any of it.
There are plenty of examples of residual hauntings near where I live. Not ghosts but events that occurred in the past and keep playing themselves over and over in the present. My favorite example of this is at an intersection where 24 separate police reports describe the same wagon pulled by two white horses steered by a young lady, causes the car accident when it suddenly appears at the intersection and then races across it causing cars to crash into one another. I once witnesses a lady slow down to almost a stop at the intersection while she had the green light. She looked both ways before proceeding across the intersection. I was thinking, oh look a local. There's no way of knowing if Yankee Doodle heard there is a residual haunt or a clever prank unless you're there and able to prove it's not a prank. But based on what others have witnessed at Gettysburg it could very well be a residual haunting. I myself have experienced residual hauntings so I know they are real.
If this is paranormal, and I've never declared it to be so, I would put it in the category of residual sounds, like a tape replaying. It is not inconceivable that an event so profound, so intense with such massive carnage, emotion and environmental impact would leave behind energy. Energy does not disappear it merely changes form.
I agree. I agree that if it's paranormal it's a residual sound. I also agree that if you're not there personally eliminating all other possibilities you can't say with certainty that it's paranormal.
not completely convinced of the drums and stuff but I can't believe no one else has pointed this out.. you weren't alone standing there. look at 11:49 through the 11:50's ... some one was creeping and crawling in and they were right in front of you. makes the rest of the video very convincing. unless you had a take recorder and woke something up you didn't intend to lol. that's freaky.
In the summer months the battlefield is open until 10 PM.
I believe it was July 7. We thought of reenactors, too, walked quite a ways looking for a group until too dark, then drove around-never did see one. We usually only saw reenactors during the day but who knows? As it was a hot & humid night, I'll concede that music can carry, just wished we had found the source. While I believe Gettysburg has a lot of energy, I don't proclaim this to be paranormal. Just very curious and something we could not explain, and added to the atmosphere at night.
Interesting experience. From what many have told me & what I've read, most of the 'unusual' experiences at Gettysburg are feelings, i.e. overwhelming sense of sadness, grief, fear, terror, even physical pain. Did you feel it to be threatening in any way or more a sense of trespassing on hallowed ground? Anything odd in photos? What side did your husband's GGGranddad fight on? Yeah it wouldn't be surprising if it were either ghostly or reenactor. I actually am a reenactor and I use to be in the fife and drum groups and I really loved it. I know fife and drum groups have played on the battlefield throughout the year but in this case it's a bit unusual for the time of day . When was the filmed?

I know, as I've seen personally that many people will go to the top of Little Round Top to play, especially fife and drums at sunset so that it carries over the whole battlefield as a memorial to them. Not to say what you caught wasn't paranormal, but that I know for a fact that it could also have a totally plausible explanation. I myself have caught some crazy EVPs in the Wheatfield, Devil's Den and the Slaughter Pen.
That's interesting. In our many summers there we've seen lots of reenactors but not bands. The music kept starting/stopping-sometimes so loud we were sure they were right in front of us! After we stopped filming & still heard music we drove around & up to Little Round Top, didn't see anyone, but it is possible they already left. Unfortunately, we'll never know for sure just what it was. I like answers.Thanks.

should have looked up the tune it was playing,,there are battle hyms and drum tunes in that time,,im sure you would find this is a civil war battle hym that was played by soldiers in that time.this is not people doing this so early in morning ,,?people dont hide in woods and play drims and fife.

most likely this is a local reenactor. frequently Ill go out on the battlefield in my uniform to talk with people in various places. I know many who play instruments also do the same.

You have really good eyes! I have seen this lots of times, but never noticed that light. I don't remember noticing it at the time or while viewing the video. I honestly have no idea. If someone had a fire going, I would have noticed it. There was no one else out that night (except for the few passing cars) in the Wheatfield area. Interesting....
Brandon, just had my husband look at it and he's right. It's the reflection off a road sign, probably diamond shaped. It's goes by fast on the video, but when you take pics at night there, the road signs reflection glare very brightly and are more obvious. Good catch tho.

Well, not sure I am convinced, but it's an interesting video, but as someone semi-local to Gettysburg with many friends from there... it sort of reminds me of a a real life story from a reenactment there.
A number of years back perhaps around 2000 or a bit earlier... some Civil War re-enactors did a re-enactment... re-enacting a battle perfectly... The only problem was the battle in question started like around 4:00 in the morning... and, while they promptly started the battle on time, the good people of modern day Gettysburg woke to the sounds of gunfire and cannons.
My Gettysburg friend said afterward the town of Gettysburg had to pass laws to prevent re-enactors from beginning their battles too early.
That said, while she was able to comment on the living, she was unsure of how the ghosts felt about it.

Yes, we've been back to Gettysburg several times since this video and have never heard anything like it again. We believed at the time that it must have been a reenactment band and kept looking for the source. There were very few visitors on the battlefield that night other than passing cars. We walked & then drove around looking for them. I'm not proclaiming it was paranormal, but it was odd how the sounds would be so loud at times, seemingly right in front of us only to fade off and start up again. I guess we'll never know for sure. Our youngest daughter (when she was 8) had an odd experience on our first visit about 10 yrs ago-she pointed to an area at the Theological Seminary and said she saw wounded soldiers with someone tending to them. She thought they were reenactors as we had been seeing them all over town. No one else in our family saw anything. She became very upset & started crying that she was the only one to see them. Did she really see something? I think so, as she was not one to make up stories. I'm pretty skeptical about paranormal events, but there is a feel to Gettysburg of intense history & emotion and I believe there is a lot of residual energy stored there. Who can say for certain if it is released periodically?
mb1554 I really appreciate you sharing this with me , just last Saturday 10-22-16 I missed the trump rally when I tried to look it up on you tube I seen your video and a bunch of other videos and I think a lot of this stuff is easy enough to check it out for ourselves since I live in Westminster md it really ain't that far to travel there . so i'm gonna go up there today I'm, gonna take my cameras and have look and see what I can see. I think the video with the ghost walking around the cannons looks pretty convincing but who knows ? thanx again : )

July, ofocurse is the reenactment time. Well early in the month I mean. There is a good chance it was reenactors but you never know! If this is legitimate paranormal footage then this is amazing.

I'm a reenactor of the civil war, some passionate and fanatic go on the historical spot such as the battlefields (or others) to make a perfect reenactment (for example: camps, formations and weapons handling, firing, training, battles, etc...). We have as a practice to sleep on the spot to have an absolute authenticity in the reenactment. No panic and don't worry, it's not the ghosts of Gettysburg…
I'm not panicked nor worried, neither am I proclaiming ghosts, only music where the source can't be found. The Gettysburg Battlefield closes at 10 PM in July, so no reenactors would have been sleeping or camping there for authenticity.

How come there were so many killed in this battle? I know there were thousands of men involved but was it due to the old style of war where they lined up and shot muskets at one another in turn? I would hate to be one of those men in the front line. They must have known they were going to be killed for sure.
araregoodguy Lined up combined with a new type of bullet. The bullets they used were shaped like they are today, instead of a round ball. This made the guns far more accurate.
It also would of been nice if you had just done a 360 with the video camera just to show everyone that it wasn't just something obvious.
valpro99 It was my first time videotaping, and as I was sure we were going to stumble upon a re-enactment band at any moment, I never even thought of that! After we got home and listened again, I only posted it to send to family & friends to view. Too long to email. But we are off to Gettysburg again this July. So if I hear anything else strange, I'll follow your suggestion.

I filmed there for about 3 hours. Didn't pick up any fife and drum music but I did hear some interesting notes coming from birds. I guess they are picking up some of the paranormal military music. Very creepy.

I have a problem with the drums sounds. That is a modern snare drum being played although the fife can still be played in certain bands. The military drums from that era had a baser tone and not the crisp sound caused by the snare drum chains.

I love Gettysburg and all of the ghost stories but I have to agree with another poster... Civil War reenactors for sure. Sound travels nicely on the fields and they have Civil War Reenactors camp behind the PA Memorial quite often. Great video though!
Pretty cool but I'm sure it was just a few re-enactors playing around. I know their not supposed to but some get away with it.

I'll say it was reenactors. Music like this can travel quite far which is why it was also used as a way of directing troops on the field. Sorry folks, there are NO ghosts in Gettysburg.
