Hurtling downhill at 50mph on a park bench has got to be one of the most terrifying motoring experiences imaginable.
You can feed the pigeons more efficiently now; they can just fly behind you!
I mean i regularly ski at half again that speed, but I somehow think this would worse.
Add to that having a single (literal) steering wheel, which is a bicycle wheel, and that it is being steered with literal handle on a fist-sized reel. Brakes also a joke, but hey, at least you can't lock 'em.
On the other hand, this is the motor racing expirience in a nutshell for a long time, and in some aspect to this day - driving some stuff way too fast to the point where it can kill you in a single unpredictable snap.
But I would still rather do 300kph in cockpit with no modern safety devices than 80kph on a bench with three bicycle wheels mounted to it
It's even worse when you realize that car didn't have actual tires xD
Nah dude. What’s scary is driving the lawnmower down a hill in VR after you messed with the file and made it have 60k bhp

I had a 125 bike which I stuck in neutral down a mountain in Aberdeenshire called "Cairn O Mount" which got up to 80mph.
Never saw that speed in 5th.
This is not a car.
Having driven a replica of this on a couple of occasions this is exactly what it's like but it is incredible fun! The tank also wouldn't get you round a whole lap so you'd need strategically placed marshalls to top it up again midway round!
Never forget when Bertha Benz, Carl Benz' wife took that think on a 106 km ride. Without telling her husband and without permission from the authorities.

I actually decided to calculate Jimmy's average speed:
The Nordschleife is 20.82km long and Jimmy lapped it in 82 minutes, so his average speed was aproximately 15.24kph.
For reference the Olympic Marathon record's average speed is a little over 20kph.
So, there are humans who are faster than this "car"
Professional marathon runners usually hold around 5-minute mile, which translates to 19.3km/h. And the annual Ekiden in Japan (from Tokyo to Hakone) they usually run around 4:30/mile pace, due to each leg around half marathon length.
So yeah, this antique car is slower than professional marathoners.
@@r.a.6459 you also reminded me of one thing: a Marathon is around 42km and the circuit is less than half of it. So probably a marathoner would be able to run a faster pace, which would make a race between the old car and an athlete even more unfair 😂
There’s an idea, human runner sim racing.
@@fernandoueno8668 Circuit is about 21k, so pretty close to half-marathon distance.

Unfair, yeah... :P
I don't think (most) marathons have the insane altitude variations of the ring
The uphill sections remind me of how I feel when I drive my Citroen C1 up hills in France on the highway and having to chuck it down into fourth just to keep some semblance of speed. Every time I'm there I'm glad I live in the Netherlands, where a speedbump counts as a hill.
This thing is amazing. Thinking about it: You can get running speed forever, no need to have a stable and feed it, would not get tired... Beats walking anywhere for long distances!

Try reversing up the hill's as it should be the lowest gear, that's what we used to do in the olden day's if 1st gear couldn't do it
The Patent-Motorwagen didn't have reverse, so if it's available in this modded car it's essentially a cheat to back up the hill. Might as well just give it 300 horsepower while you're at it. The car used a belt that you kinda pushed from an idler to the crank to vary how much power made it to the rear axle.

I don't think they would have thought it was witchcraft... especially because the steam engine was already in use back then. This is pretty cool to see, I was part of a team that made replicas of these for the museum in Germany and for private buyers. Wicked memories and cool video
Fun fact: The Motorwagen could achieve around 25 mpg (10l/100km) fuel efficiency which means that it would have enough fuel in its 1 gallon (4.5l) fuel tank to do two laps around the Nordschleife depending on which kind of lap you do.
Also, the lap time of around 82 minutes is about the same per-mile pace as a marathon runner in a 10k. A 10k is about half as long as the Nordschleife so when you account for the fact that a human would run this at more than twice the time it would take to run half of it due to cumulative exhaustion, it's still faster than going on foot (if you assume the vehicle has no mechanical failures the entire time). I think therein is the benefit of the vehicle. Running or riding a bike over very long distances is going to tire out the person more than occasionally having to stop and make repairs. It's not something you'd drive back and forth to the neighbor's house down the street, but if you had to go many miles, you might want to have one of these. That's what early cars were mainly for, and you weren't just a driver when you had one, you also had to be a mechanic as they needed constant tweaking and repairs by the driver.
We need to see a race against the community in this car.
