    The "American way" is an ideal , a separate thing from United States government policy. Superman is for the ideal "American way."

    • @DocuzanQuitomos
      @DocuzanQuitomos Před 6 měsíci +23

      As an ideal, it shouldn't be linked just to the United States of America. I get the concept: one specific dream was what gave birth to the nation, and the nation tries to live up to that dream and spread it to the world.
      Unfortunately, by adding the "american" tag to the concept it's easy to get lost in translation: some consider the "american dream" is whatever current views the American government and society has; while in the other extreme some question why only the "United States of America" should be considered the representation of that dream (if its components are meant to be universal).
      Part of today's conflict around the world (and in the film) is that some think the "american dream" is dead because the country doesn't live up to it (or should be rejected because it waves that flag); but, in reality, the dream is to live under certain circumstances that allow equal rights and opportunities to everyone (and that is not tied to a flag or a territory... so how do you call it?).
      I'm not naive; I know the "american dream" won't be called differently any time soon, but yeah: the "american dream", as an ideal, doesn't exactly need America to inspire and be implemented in other places.

    Its weird how everyone in this film seems to underestimate Superman. One of the downsides of holding back your true power I guess, but it also comes in handy when you do decide to take the kid gloves off and the enemy is like "I regret everything right now".

    • @DocuzanQuitomos
      @DocuzanQuitomos Před 6 měsíci +10

      It's generalized for the sake of telling the story faster; but it makes sense: Superman has (apparently) all these powers but always sends its enemies to jail or an alternate universe or some non lethal solution.
      In the long run, the question has been if Superman really is that powerful or he just lacks resolve (as if he was a tamed pet... we forget some animals are dangerous when mishandled, until some idiot creates the conditions for an attack).
      So the film jumps right to the general behavior where people just forgets Superman's powers because they take his peaceful ways for granted (partially why he needs to make this "murderous display" to remind people they should be careful of what they ask).

    • @Sweet_Venom0027
      @Sweet_Venom0027 Před 6 měsíci +9

      @@DocuzanQuitomos that's kind of the point. Superman apprehends or banishes his foes(usually) that means he fights a harder fight by not just killing his enemies. He never said that he couldn't kill any of his supervillains just that it was against his belief in the law to do so.
      And maybe if The Elite played this smarter they would have had a better chance. Superman can easily overpower most of em buy people forget that he's really intelligent too, he had the resources and prep time to catch them all off guard and pick them off one by one even when they met at a place The Elite chose.

    The comic that this movie was adapted from came from an era when anti-hero comic book characters were popular that "finally did something". The Punisher is probably the biggest character to come out of that era of comics. It was a backlash against the classic hero's like Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, and Iron Man seemingly idiotic approach to crime and injustice. I love this story because it's so easy to cry out for extreme changes when problems exist, especially problems that have a long and subtle history where bringing a hammer to it makes the problem much worse. This story is a reminder that we need to do good not because it's the solution to a problem, as if its a game where embracing "the dark side" is a solution to problems, but rather just to simply do good for the sake of it even if it can be the more difficult path.

    • @Rocket1377
      @Rocket1377 Před 6 měsíci +16

      The Punisher has been around since the 1970s, so he is a bad example of that trend. Marvel also made it very clear that Punisher is not on the right side of the law, as he has gone to jail many times for murdering criminals, unlike many of the late '90s comic book heroes who often seemed to be above the law.

      @kentonjen8475 Před 6 měsíci +19

      @@Rocket1377@Rocket1377 It was more inspired by The Authority by Warren Ellis, where the superheroes regrouped and decided it was time to take the kid gloves off. They decided that since the villains were irredeemable and the governments of the world were either too incompetent or too corrupt to govern the people, the "heroes" would take the reins and do what was necessary for the greater good. Unfortunately, their idea of the greater good became more of the "if you look into the abyss, the abyss stares back" kind of argument. At first, the idea of the Authority finally dealing with the villains and problems of the world was favorable. Still, after the superheroes began embracing their brutal and violent side and when there were no more villains to deal with, the heroes started turning on the people, ruling the world with a totalitarian sense of authority that made many people fear and despise them.

    I like to think that Superman’s quote of “Truth, Justice, and the American way” is supposed to mean the ideal that everyone wants America to be. Essentially, the version of “America” we’re ironically made to believe in as kids. He’s a hero who doesn’t pick and choose who matters across the entire world. He embodies the ideology that America should strive for. He’s not saying it to be exclusive.

    Superman being an optimistic goody two shoes, is very much why he is a great hero and making him a dark anti-hero takes away from why he has lasted so long as a character.
    The story also have a couple of jabs at him being an american hero, by pointing out that the America whose ideals he follow is not the real America, but the ideal.

Superman feels the weight of every person he cant save and it mentally affects him like an anchor holding the weight of the world on his back yet when hes tempted by those dark thoughts he chooses to be good despite his immense powers, because Superman just wants to help and truly believes in us all even when we don't believe in ourselves.

    "Truth, justice and the American way" was introduced as a slogan in the old Superman radio series, when it was used to sell war bonds. It was retired at the end of World War II, but came back in the 1950s TV show and then kind of overstayed its welcome in pop culture thanks to being referenced in the Richard Donner movie. More recently, the phrase "truth, justice and a better tomorrow" has been used, which feels more accurate to what Superman is about. "Truth, tolerance and justice", "Truth and justice", "Truth, Justice and Freedom" and "Truth, Justice and Peace For All Mankind" have also been used in the past. There have also been tongue-in-cheek variations along the lines of "truth, justice and other stuff". It's a long running thing, the push and pull of whether "the American way" actually says anything about Superman. Truth and justice are the constants.
    In any case, I love this movie. To date, I think it might be my favorite solo Superman movie. I'll always prefer stories that place Superman in a complicated debate, because superpowers don't win debates. He has to demonstrate the importance of mercy/kindness/etc., rather than just beat the other guy physically, and this story takes that to a place where it almost looks like he's lost his high ground, but he ultimately hasn't.

    This story is a very close second favorite to the Superman: Peace on Earth comic. This used to be my favorite but Peace on Earth’s take on Superman is much more down to earth and doesn’t have any big villains for him to face. It’s just a story about a man wanting to make the world a better place and struggling with the challenges that poses.
    But, both of these stories keep Clark’s humble upbringing as part of his character and despite his insane abilities he is simply a protector of the planet that raised him, that he loves. As much as I love Superman beating the hell out of Lex, Braniac, etc. I love when comics or media show his more human nature and depict him in a more slice of life sort of way.

    If James Gunn takes inspiration from this story for Superman: Legacy and tweaks it into Superman vs. The Authority (a The Boys-esque super team with no qualms about killing), the DCU might have a fighting chance in this current climate of superhero oversaturation (I'm not willing to label it fatigue as a slew of high quality movies could still turn this around).

    I remember when this comic came out back in the 2000's. The Elite was a clear jab at the Authority from Image Wildstorm comics that was popular at the time. The Authority (who DC actually owns currently and has used some of the characters in a few series even giving some their own in the case of Apollo and Midnighter), was the Image/Wildstorm version of the Justice League but taken to the next level where they kill their villains, topple corrupt governments etc. Think The Boys, except the Boys are the Seven and actually do hero stuff while not being corporate sellouts. The most popular members were Apollo and Midnighter, a spin on Superman and Batman, but as a gay married couple, (then DC comic's EIC Paul Levitz supposedly hated this concept of a murderous Superman/Batman gay couple). You should check out the Authority series. It starts off as an over the top superhero series, but slowly becomes a straight-up sci-fi series with extra dimensional travel, space God's, and various Apocalypses.

Also in the comics Manchester Black has come back a few times since his initial appearance and his original experience with Superman really turned him around and set him on the right path as a stunning example of Superman's approach to restorative and redemptive justice works (even if sometimes we need a little tough love)

    Defiantly one of my favorite DC movies even after all these years, it’s a shame that more people don’t know about it. Although it would completely destroy the universe, I just wish there were proper ways to contain threats in DC so there isn’t the kill or not to kill question. The only reason I agree with the kill proposal is because the heinous villains will never be contained or rehabilitated so it is only a repetitive cycle of catch and release with the civilians acting a fodder. But this is also somewhat of a paradox because the only reason I wouldn’t be terrified of someone as strong as superman eliminating a threat is because he is boy scout that we love. But if he does kill then he isn’t the superman that I would trust to kill.

The American way is the American ideal, not the American reality. It's about the dream. Just like Captain America, Superman believes in people and their ability to be the best version of themselves enough that they would never try to take over. This movie puts Superman's ideals and morals to the ultimate test. And the message is that, Superman's morality is still important. We need people who care. Human life is important, and we're certainly all a bunch of assholes, but we can always do better. And maybe we need someone who can show us that we can do better.
    I wish we didn't need someone to show us this, but I do believe humans are basically good. And the real power of Superman is that, faced with extreme cynicism and despair, he maintains his hope and love for humanity. So that is my big takeaway from this movie.
