Kingsfold - I Heard The Voice Of Jesus Say - Mini tour of the stops of the new CANTORUM DUO PLUS

  • Here we go with the second video recorded with my new Viscount Cantorum Duo PLUS, equipped with the new Physis Plus technology. I think there is still some voicing refinement to be done, but overall, I already like what I hear. The new editor allows many more voicing possibilities, and I still need to get acquainted with all the new functions.
    The piece I have chosen to give a brief tour of the sounds of the organ is the hymn tune Kingsfold, "I heard the voice of Jesus say", which I particularly like.
    Please note that the instrument has been completely revoiced. Moreover, I added some octave couplers, which are not there out of the box, and a custom powerful reverb.
    I hope you will enjoy the music and the sound of this little but assertive instrument.
    Ciao
    Paolo

    Well, you will not be surprised to know that I am impressed. The voicing and other magic you add makes for a most convincing and really satisfying pipe organ substitute sound here. The truth is I would not know this is a digital instrument, generating synthetic pipe sound (and since you have no attached pedal board, it demonstrates how effective the manual/pedal coupler is for those who are not au fait with this particular organist skill). If only it sounded like this straight out-of-the-box. Viscount is missing an opportunity to blow the competition out of the water. As Carly Simon sang in the Bond film, 'The Spy Who Loved Me' . . . nobody does it better, Paolo. You are the 007 of the digital organ world - the secret agent with all the answers!
    'Kingsfold' has never sounded better. "I heard the voice of Paolo say, this is what Physis plus can do . . . '

    @FlexLessons Před 6 měsíci +5

    Sounds amazing. I would love it if you would consider recording without the couplers and the reverb from the chain. I don’t know about others, but I would really like to know what your voicing sounds like just coming from the Viscount alone. Also, have you ever considered making a guide or any kind of teaching resource on how one should go about voicing their instrument?

    • @grahamtwist
      @grahamtwist Před 6 měsíci +3

      I know Paolo will answer the requests you make . . . but I would guess that, even with his expert voicing skills, the sound of this Physis Plus instrument out-of-the-box and with its in-built speakers will be less than satisfactory (being polite!), and not a sound Paolo would want to share on his channel - especially as you can hear what Physis Plus sounds like out-of-the-box on CZcams videos that Viscount has already uploaded with its inbuilt reverb and factory voicing.
      The truth is . . . Paolo is making us aware of the real potential of this advanced technology, when brought to life with the 'magic' he alone adds. Viscount is quite happy to sell you something markedly inferior; Paolo is only interested in the best possible outcome . . . and it comes at a price!

    • @FlexLessons
      @FlexLessons Před 6 měsíci +2

      Thank you for your comment. I figured this would be the case. I actually quite like the sound of the Viscount Opera recordings, but not so much the others. They are aware of this, by the way, and I anticipate that they might update some of this content. On a side note, I play in an acoustically dry church, and most of the churches in the area are similar, unfortunately. We use a Viscount, and it has already been rather impressive so far. I have been running a Hauptwerk setup for years, and I still appreciate the sound that a Viscount can make. However, I have not heard anything quite like the content on this channel! @@grahamtwist

    • @grahamtwist
      @grahamtwist Před 6 měsíci +1

      I happily use Hauptwerk, and although I like the access it gives me to some of the great organs in the world, I recognise that Physis plus technology is capable of producing an even better result as it is not just recorded, individual pipe sounds brought together artificially, but generated pipe sounds that can be nuanced to copy real pipe speech to a remarkably good approximation. Unfortunately, the weakness in the Viscount product tends to be the factory voicing, the low quality built-in reverb and the inferior speakers. That's a shame when you see what this technology can sound like when Paolo addresses those weaknesses! But I'm glad you are happy with the instrument you play. We all want our Viscount organs to sound like Paolo's instruments!

    I am thinking about buying the Dou plus. What I do not get: How do you always enhance the sounds like you are doing? My little researches lead nowhere. Is that a possibility within the Physys Pluy technology? Do you use an external software and/or is something plugged in while you are playing or does the sound come from the Duo alone after enhancing it? I would be greatful if you could guide me into the right direction.

    Sounds very impressive. I’m curious how it sounds in your room. And how it feels to play. You can get most current VPO’s to sound pretty good for the listener. But the playing experience is generally not great ( ie. Hauptwerk etc )

    • @digitalpipes
      @digitalpipes  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Thanks. I always use headphones because, so far, it is the most faithful means available to reproduce the sound precisely without the interference of the room where the organ sits (double ambience problem). Of course, it is also possible to listen through speakers, but the result is not so immersive unless one uses a calibrated surround system. I also have Hauptwerk and Sweelinq but I used them only for voicing research purposes. I agree with you that the playing experience (while the sound is attractive) is somehow off; I get tired of the sound very fast. I experience the same with every sampled instrument, and I guess it is because of the repetitiveness of the samples being played over and over again. On the other hand, I do have this problem with my Physis instruments because the sound is more alive and coherent, so it approximates the behaviour of a real pipe organ better than other technologies. These are just my two cents... 🙂

    • @djmcguckin
      @djmcguckin Před 6 měsíci

      @@digitalpipes thank you for taking the time to reply. I used to do some voicing for one of the manufactures when i was a bit younger and although the technology has improved so much, i still find the playing experience uninspiring. I agree that there is the obvious limitation with sample based instruments. And this is more evident for organs as opposed to other orchestral instruments. Sometimes i find hauptwerk a little fun. But for practise it’s always just one 4ft flute no mater what the instrument. !

    • @digitalpipes

      @@digitalpipes Ok, ok. Mine arrives next monday. I'm reading the manual at page EN-25 and it is a little bit confusing for me. So. • @digitalpipes
      @digitalpipes  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Keep the headphone connected to the audio interface connected to the line outputs of the cantorum. When you want to listen with the headphones you just wear them, and turn down the internal volume with the potentiometer, when you want to play with the speakers you just turn up the volume.
