Hey Ibra! Thanks for commenting, I saw both your messages in this video "How much do things cost in Egypt | Shopping Mart" and in my other video "How Much Do Things COST in Egypt? PRICES & COSTS Of Taxis, Hostels, Food, Drinks", and it's a good question.
You are right, there is inflation happening here just as in many other parts of the world. But don't forget the Egyptian Pound has also lost a lot of value in the past year. When I arrived in Egypt in October of 2021, $1 USD = 15 EGP. Now (January 15th, 2023) $1 USD = 29 EGP. So the currency has been reduced in value to almost half of it's value, in USD. Prices have gone up a bit, but usually only by a few EGP, which is just a few cents in USD.
I would like to make another video about prices in Egypt, especially in a supermarket, the problem is almost all the supermarkets I try to film in ask me to stop filming almost as soon as I start. But I can try and go and film incognito with my phone and see if I have better luck doing that. Do you have any items or things you would like to know the price of, in particular? I plan on making another video showing price of a liter of gas, showing some cheap items like cigs/water/soda again, but what else are you curious to see the price of? Yes, it the EGP have been losing its value. Yeah i understand they don't like cameras much, but yeah mainly like the shop and more like the downtown of Cairo as every CZcamsr has covered the pyramids but i like how you are showing more of the local areas and that shows whats the day to day life like if someone wants to live there for like few month or longer.

@@salehnabil506 That's going to depend on your preferred method of transportation and where you like to eat. Answering questions regarding daily spending/accommodation and food I always find difficult to answer, as it depends on your lifestyle.
If you do everything local (microbuses, the blue public buses and metro) transportation can be extremely cheap, like 50 pounds a day or MUCH less. But if you are taking uber taxis everywhere it could be (depending on distance and how many places you are visiting) several hundred EGP in a day. Totally depends.
Same with food. There is a rooftop restaurant near the pyramids that charges $5 USD for a JUICE! That juice is over 150 EGP. At a local juice shop you can get the same thing for 15-30 EGP, depending on the juice you select. If you are eating foul and falafel at street food stalls it will be MUCH cheaper than if you ordered the same thing at a sit down restaurant (especially the restaurants tourists like to frequent, those places always charge more). It also depends on how MUCH you eat in a day. I don't eat that much and one small koshary (for the price of 30 EGP or less), can be two meals for me. That might not be enough for one person, so depends on how hungry you are/how often you eat in a day.
In summary: There are too many variables for me to give you a direct answer. But it can be cheap if you want it to be. It can also be expensive if you like luxury, foreign food, are unwilling to eat street food and want to take a taxi everywhere. I also don't know your home currency so I don't have much to compare with. But you can look up restaurants and their menus online (talabat.com/egypt is one source), you can look at the current exchange rate from your home currency to the EGP, and you can look up Uber rides without being in the country to see the cost. Just pick a destination and departure area and see what Uber says. That will give you a better idea of cost of things. Best of luck!

I have been watching all of your videos getting ready for my trip to Egypt. I feel that they show a realistic view of Egypt. I would love to see you do a video of basic Egyptian Arabic words and phrases that you use there on a daily basis. I know there are other CZcams videos that teach language, however you are really good at explaining things!😊

You know, I've been suggested this in the past too, I just feel weird as a non-native speaker and A1 level beginner to try and explain Arabic to anyone 😅But I probably could make a short one explaining some basic words and phrases that are useful for a quick trip around Egypt...it is something I will reconsider 😊

No worries, my pleasure! Bear in mind I did make this video last year and prices have gone up since then, but also the EGP has lost some value, so it might even out or even be slightly less. For example a small bottle of water is now 5 EGP not 3 EGP (5 EGP is now $0.16 USD), a can of soda (depending on size) is around 8-10 EGP (8-10 EGP is now $0.26-$0.32 USD). I need to make an updated video of the prices, but things are still very similar or close to what is in this video. Thanks so much for watching!

Haha I know, so many of those videos out there. Lots of scams do exist here but that's just a reality and if you know what to expect and how to deal with it it's really not such a huge issue. Lots of scammers in India too, it's just a part of life in some countries. However, as a girl and then a woman, I was always overprotected by my family member. Didn't get to do much by my own (not even groceries!). Thanks Zoey! I appreciate your support by watching the channel and happy to hear my videos are making you feel more at ease about Egypt! The culture is definitely different to my own (US) or France, of course, but I don't think it's the terrible place I have heard some people describe either. Yes, the men are more verbal here, they can be quite persistent and more bold in their advances, but it is almost always just that; words. I really love going out and wandering around exploring and I meet a lot of very friendly and kind people while doing so. Depending on the area, there can be more bothersome men (usually teens and young men) trying to get your attention, but it's something I either just ignore or laugh off (ignoring is usually the best course of action if you don't want to get swarmed 😅). But I'd say it's pretty harmless, it's not dangerous, and there are so many amazing aspects to Egypt, the culture and the people I wouldn't want to stay locked up inside for fear of some ridiculous boys catcalling.

@@Gventures me and my girlfriends will be in Cairo for a few days on the 23rd then we’ll fly down to Aswan, sail to Luxor for about a week then fly back to Cairo for a couple more days. We’ll be with a travel group and will have our dedicated trip leader that is born and raised in Cairo. It should be an amazing journey. Having a guide throughout will give us piece of mind too. Hey..maybe we can meet up and have a cold beer with me and my friends.

Awesome, I'm glad you found this helpful! Since I made this video the EGP has lost some of it's value, and there has been some inflation, but it is not a huge difference. A small water now costs around 4-5 EGP, a large 1 liter bottle of water 10 EGP. A soda costs 7 EGP. Very similar prices, and at least it gives you a better idea of what things cost. I should study more and learn to read and write, it's just so much and I'm not the most dedicated student. Hi Giselle. Thanks for sharing your shopping experiences. Can you do a video on where to shop for organic foods/household cleaning products/clothing/juices (not with milk,sugar), etc. Would appreciate it if you know.
Unfortunately, every time I try to film indoors, and specifically supermarkets and grocery stores, I am told I am now allowed to film in them, so I don't think I can fulfill this request. I am also not really sure where to find organic vegetables or juices without sugar, as I always get juice with sugar in it, and just buy veggies from the local fruit vendor stall outside on the corner of my street. You can find clothes all over of course, everything from stores in malls and normal shops in the street all the way to used clothing in outdoor markets. Cleaning products are easy to find in almost any supermarket. They have a few Carrefour's here in Cairo as well. If you want juice without sugar or milk, you can always go to the juice shops that are all over Cairo and simply request the fresh juice without sugar or milk. There is also a grocery store chain called Seoudi Market, they carry a lot of specialty items, foreign foods, gourmet stuff. You could probably find a few things there as well.

This has been very insightful. I Just recently thought this could be a wonderful retirement palace as a American. Now I have a cost base online. I can plan on living there like 40yrs from now lol
It is a very affordable place to travel or live. Of course, there can be drawbacks to living in any country. For example, I lived in Vietnam for awhile, and discovered their hospitals are not at all well equipped, so for anyone living with health issues, it can be a problem in Vietnam. I know that kind of thing matters, especially when one nears retirement and overall health declines.

3:15 I think I ran into this guy and his brothers parfume shop last month when I was in Cairo. I recommend to go with him the next time. They are great salesman and use EVERY trick in the book. Honestly, it a great experience 😂 But dont buy anything, I left 20 pounds and said "thx for the show"

Thank you! I like to learn languages and started to pick up some words by simply speaking with Egyptians as soon as I arrived. No formal studies, and I only knew 2 words when I first arrived to Egypt. I could learn more, and faster if I actually studied 😅 Considering I have been here for almost 2 years now, I should know more.
Hey Gventures, good to see your Arabic has improved, reason why I say that is because it can be your best weapon when dealing with rip-off merchants who want to take advantage of you, it's a very good deterrent like a mosquito repellent Haha. Egyptians are welcoming people as you already know, but also opportunist, especially with foreigners with red hair Haha, only kidding. I'm a British Arab who speaks Arabic, yet they still try it on with me. I've been here for a year now and lost my temper a few times because they won't take no for an answer. Thank you for showing me around, places I have yet to explore.
Yeah I definitely need to improve my Arabic, not just to deal with street vendors but because I enjoy interacting with people and I wish I could speak to the random person on the street and carry a conversation or ask them some questions! Fortunately for me I think I do know how to handle the street vendors fairly well because I used to sell things on the street too (for like 7 years) in NYC and LA so I know how the whole "game" works and usually don't struggle too hard with getting a fair price. One trick is to just start walking away, it works all over the world including places like India that also have a high number of people trying to rip you off. Or I just don't buy it if they refuse to budge. Mama didn't raise no fool 🤣Congratulations on a year here! I just recently passed a year in Egypt as well. Loving it so much, allatul Maser! 😄😍😎

Great video. I'm the type of traveler that takes local transportation over taxis and Ubers. It looks like is not that expensive to move around Cairo. Looking forward to my trip in May, 2023.
Hell yeah man! I definitely agree with that style of travel, and honestly normally take local transportation as well when traveling around the world. However, as I love motorcycles so much and Uber is cheap, I did take Uber motorbike around a lot. Now I have my own motorcycle in Cairo and can drive myself around so I don't take them very often 😁 But before buying the motorcycle I did take the metro/subway around a fair amount. The really local way to move around is microbuses though, which I have taken a few times, but it is kinda confusing at first, especially if you don't speak Arabic. But I would definitely recommend at least catching a ride or two on them, it's part of Egyptian life and if you are looking to experience real local way of transportation, that is the way to do it 😁 They are real crazy drivers though and a real menace on the streets, I always keep my distance from them when driving as they make sudden movements without warning 😂You're going to love Egypt!

I'm traveling with my wife and two daughters. Both over 20. I told them they have to dress a little conservative. Don't want any issues with local authorities 🤷♂️.
@@josepintado3910 Ahaha, true. Those microbus drivers are mad though, you'll see what I mean when you get here. A metro ticket doesn't work for the microbus, you just pay them according to the distance, usually only a few pounds (downtown Cairo to the Pyramids of Giza, for example, is around 6 or 7, maybe even 5 EGP). But they don't speak any English. Locals many times use hand signals to let them know where they are going, though when it pulls up you can name the place where you want to go and see if they are headed there.
There is no dress code law here like in Iran or something, but they should wear more than they would in the West. The reason to cover up here is more to avoid harassment from the men and just to remain respectful to the culture.
It depends on how your wife/daughters are used to dressing but yeah, I would wear a bit more than normal. I do wear more than I would in a Western country that is for sure. No shorts, no tank tops, etc. I could cover up more (like cover my shoulders, or wear looser clothing), but to be honest I have just gotten lazy since I live here and I wear tight clothes since I am riding motorbike😆). Lol thanks man! I don't know what kid they are, but they are hard to find. I used to live in NYC and bought them in St. Marks Square there, anytime I go back I buy a few pairs. They cost around $10-$12 a pair

I unfortunately cannot, I'm sorry! The city is far too large and there are far too many variables for me to be able to make a video about it. It also sounds very exhausting to make 😅 Rents vary by location, size, furnished or unfurnished, compound or gated to community, the list goes on and on, and I really just don't want to have to contact rental agencies and landlords and ask to speak to them or view their apartments for no reason (as I already have my own apartment and do not plan on renting another). Also, I do not speak Arabic well, so the language barrier is a big problem. If you are a single female wanna coming to Egypt, I would recommend you to marry a guy from Egypt, because most people in Egypt prefer marriage, and you can both start over, hope the best for you in life ❤

Dang, to be honest, I have NO idea. You mean a pashmina scarf? The problem is that I don't know materials and fabrics well enough to even know if something is real pashmina or not. All the vendors will say this is real, this is good material, that is why it is expensive. And i usually just tell them I don't care about the quality and I want cheap prices (because I don't trust that it is the quality they are advertising, and I can't tell the difference). I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful 😞

Hi, thanks for watching man! You are correct in assuming it is not very popular at all. Hotels and fancy restaurants will accept cards, almost everywhere else will not. Of course, nobody on the street will accept cards, that includes street vendors, most tourist shops selling souvenirs, shops in the markets, any food cart or stall on the street, etc. But even a lot of restaurants and convenience shops will not accept card (or if they do, their machine isn't working) so it is best to carry cash on you. I've even stayed at hostels where the machine isn't working and I had to pay in cash. Rule of thumb, just expect to pay cash everywhere (unless you are living a 5-star lifestyle). 😁

How much does it cost for Egyptian Oil from a perfumery? I've bought lots of this when in different parts of Egypt, but the prices always vary greatly.
Great question! It does vary and I have no idea why, I don't usually buy oils but I have a few times. I bought some last year, shown in this video: czcams.com/video/435QVWVA4B8/video.html
But I know the prices are higher now just because Egypt is experiencing inflation (just like most places around the world). It also depends on what kind of oil you are buying (musk, for example, is harder to get and therefore more expensive), as well as the quality of the oil (of which I know nothing about). So to summarize...I have no idea and I'm sorry 🤣 Just try to barter and accept what you are willing to pay and refuse if you are not. I don't really know the prices of things I don't buy though, as since I don't buy a lot of souvenirs, papyrus or oils (commonly bought items from visitors within the country), I am never sure on the correct price.
Something I don’t think you mentioned was the sleeper train. It’s cheaper to take the Go Bus vs sleeper train. I think you mentioned it in another video, to give everyone a heads up. It costs 10 pounds to use the bathroom
Oh yeah, buses are almost always cheaper than taking trains, I think that is typical for most countries around the world. And here in Egypt if you pay for a sleeper train it's the same price as just taking a flight usually 😅 There's also a new rule (just happened recently) that foreigners must pay for trains in USD, which is ridiculous. Using bathrooms in many places should cost 5 not 10, but I have heard Egyptians telling foreigners in the past it costs 10. They have tried that with me but I always say in Arabic "No, 5" and they wave me in. They know 😆 I definitely need to make another video about the prices here, as inflation has happened since I made this and prices have changed a bit. And one of my Egyptian friends investigated this and said they just enacted this new rule/regulation. Yeah I've spoken to a few Egyptians who have been outside of the country for a long time (like 20 years) and they said they felt like a stranger in their own country coming back, that it was hard for them to cross the streets, etc. Egyptians can tell when you've been away a long time, they can tell if someone is rusty with their Arabic, and they will treat them as an outsider, will try and charge more money just as they do to a foreigner, etc. Dahab is nice, enjoy!

This winters not bad, but theyve been super cold more so than ridiculous snow past few years which is odd, just a few large storms per year but a lot of negative ⁰s. @@erikdale9145 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Erik! I may have mentioned getting laundry done in my video, I can't remember. I did get laundry done (once) while on my trek, in Namche Bazar. But the only reason I had time for that was because of the acclimatization day (extra day hanging out in same location), because usually laundry takes at least 24 hours to do, as it needs to air dry (and it's cold so it takes forever). I personally would recommend just bringing enough clothes for your trek without having to do laundry. I don't know about a lot of other trekkers, but I think most of us were showering very little (as the water is freezing, shower is located outside in a little wooden shack, same as toilets many times), wearing the same clothes and generally just kind of...not at our peak hygiene. Unless you have at least 1.5-2 days in any given location, I wouldn't risk asking them to do your laundry. You can also wash it yourself, but again, water is freezing and you will need to let it air dry, so you will probably have wet clothes hanging outside your pack to finish drying if that's what you end up doing.

Totally depends, what do you think is a decent meal? I think a decent meal can be a shawarma. That can be found for 100 EGP at a more "expensive" fast food/shawarma joint, or less at another spot. Koshary is even cheaper, and you can get a big bowl of that for 40 EGP. Then there are also cheap street food vendors where you can buy several sandwiches of either kebda, falafel or foul for even cheaper.
Damn. In September 2022 it was indeed 1USD for 19,20-19,60EGP. In Januari 2023 is went from 24,50 to 30 and it has stayed above thirty for all of 2023, meaning that when she made this video it was cheap, but right after it became even cheaper😮

😆Well yeah the guy was just trying to sell me stuff, it happens a lot where a vendor will see a foreigner, assume they are a tourist (and don't live here like I do) and try to drag you to their shop to buy crappy souvenirs. I don't mind it and I know how to deal with them, anyway 😅 Ahaha, I'm not a huge patriot or nationalist, but happy I hold the American passport. NYC is great though! I lived there for several years and really love that city.

Yeah Sharm is pretty liberal and full of tourists as it's basically a resort town so I think people dress however they want there and can be pretty scantily clad. I've never been there but I have been to Dahab and it's a lot more relaxed and less modest than Cairo or other places in Egypt, because of the beach and tourism probably.

Thanks Winnie! During Ramadan there won't be a lot of restaurants open until after sundown, so be aware of that. There are some open, but it's a lot less than normal. Little shops selling snacks will be, but maybe when restaurants are open grab some lunch for the next day 😅 I bet a lot of money that hotels will have food being served, maybe all day and night, but I dunno, I stay at hostels (that sometimes serve free breakfast, depends on the hostel).
I think Uber is the best way to get around because it's a sure way to pay what you should be paying (as you know the price before ordering and the price after the ride is done when it's time to pay). The white taxis (or any taxi just driving around that isn't Uber) will definitely try to rip you off. One way to avoid getting ripped off by the white taxis is to get on the Uber app, set the location to where you want to go and then see the price that Uber would charge you, without actually ordering the Uber. Then barter with the white taxis to get a price close to what they will charge you (it will be slightly more, but at least you won't be paying double or triple what you should be paying). You do need a SIM card for Uber. But be aware! The numbers in Arabic are different. I didn't know that when I first arrived to Egypt, so my first time ordering an Uber, when the app told me to look for the license plate number 236 (in English on my phone), I started looking at license plates on the cars and that is when I realized, the numbers in Arabic are different than the ones we use in the West, and many other places around the world! So maybe try to learn those. Knowing the numbers will be useful for more than just Ubers. You can do a quick google search to see the numbers. You don't need to speak Arabic to get an Uber. Sometimes they may call you to confirm your location, in those instances I either just say "location muzboot" which means "location is good/accurate", or stop a local and just say "Uber...help" and hand them the phone 😆They are a little confused at first but once they start speaking to the driver they figure out what's going on and explain to the driver where I am/what street. People are nice, yay 😊 Just remember to say shukran (thanks) to the person that helped you talk to the Uber driver.

2 = ٢ (looks like 1 with one swoop out)
3 = ٣ (looks like 1 with 2 swoops out)
4 = ٤ (4 looks like backwards 3)
5 = ٥ (5 looks like zero)
6 = ٦ (6 looks like seven)
7 = ٧ (7 heaven-because it's facing up)
8 = ٨ (8 hate-because it's facing down)
9 = ٩ (9 is nine)
10 = ٠ (10 is a period)
So something that costs 150 EGP is going to look like ١٥٠

Oh I just saw this comment now. Cheap accommodation, you mean long-term like for living or short-term for vacation? Cairo University is not far from downtown, hostels in downtown Cairo are going to be you cheapest option and then take the metro or bus to the University. For long-term living, that is more tricky. Almost all apartments that are available for rent are unfurnished and require a one year rental agreement for you to sign. Unless you find roommates or something

Honestly, not sure if there is a "best" place to exchange, but if there is, I don't know it. I almost never exchange money, I always just use ATM's and pull out local currency (WITHOUT using any conversion, they charge more for that at ATM's around the world). But I never recommend people to exchange their money at airports, as they typically have terrible exchange rates compared to outside the airport area. And that goes for anywhere in the world. Airports always have the worst exchange rates. I did need to exchange money once and did it at this location in downtown Cairo (very near the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square): Name: Egyptian Exchange Co. From Cairo? I just looked it up and right now it is saying it will cost 645 EGP, so like $34 USD. I'm sure you will be able to find someone to take you there eventually, but you may get denied a lot because of the distance. I know I have even been denied rides a few times even for just 1.5 hour rides (I will order the Uber, they arrive, and then they seem to look at/realize the location of where they are going to take me. That is when they tell me "no, sorry" and drive off).

Yes it has lost quite a bit of value. It lost a bit of value since I made this video, but the major change happened back around February. The easiest way to see the difference would be to input current USD to EGP and see what the exchange rate is, as I have given the rates in the video. Rates fluctuate daily and by December, who knows what they will be. But because I gave the exchange rate in the beginning of the video, you will be able to compare it with what it is in December when you come

I don't really know what you mean by coins or paper, there are both paper and coins. I will try and make a video showing Egyptian currency soon though, perhaps that will be helpful for some people in the future. In the meantime, I'll link a video for you here in this comment. It's an Egyptian woman who teaches Arabic, but in the video I am linking she shows the Egyptian money and talks about it a bit so it may be helpful. Skip to 1:35 in her video and she starts to show the different bills. 13:40 she gets to the coins. The bills here in Egypt have both "Arabic numbers" and the "English numbers", but the coins only have "Arabic numbers" written on them.
Technically speaking, what I am referring to as the "English numbers" (the number system and characters we use in the US and Europe and most countries around the world in general) actually originated in in India and evolved into what we use today. They are referred to by many different names including Western Arabic numerals, Ghubār numerals, Hindu-Arabic numerals, Western digits, Latin digits, or European digits.

Whether you are a student or not, there is no way for me to answer your question. I don't know where you will be living (hostel, studio, roommates, your own apartment, on some university campus, what neighborhood in Cairo or Giza, etc.) And I have no idea of your standard of living. Maybe you eat out at fancy restaurants, maybe you eat street food every day, maybe you barely eat. Perhaps you like shopping at malls, maybe you are fine buying used clothing in the street markets. There are too many variables for me to give you an answer. But I guess you will be here soon and find out! Good luck!

How did you learn to speak Egyptian Arabic? Are you originally Egyptian? I was born in el Dokki I the sixties. I remember we used to fly EgyptAir to fly to Alexandria to visit my late uncle who was a naval officer stationed there. Have you been to Alexandria yet? It is much nicer than Cairo.
No I am not Egyptian at all (I am half American half Argentine). I knew 2 words when I arrived (shukran and 7abiby 😆) but started asking people how to say things as soon as I arrived and have been learning that way ever since. I should probably try to take some classes or something 😅 I have been to Alex a few times, and I love it, it's very beautiful! The last time I rode my motorcycle there, it was great. But I really do love Cairo, it holds a special place in my heart and it's my favorite city in Egypt, which is why I decided to stay in Egypt and live in Cairo 🥰

Thank you! Hmm, actually I haven't really done the math on that on that to check, and I'm already forgetting how much things cost in US. Maybe around to 1/3 to 1/4 the cost of things in US...? Things are cheaper here than in the States, of course, but certain things vary in price. For example, accommodation is not the cheapest thing compared to other countries. But it depends how luxurious or budget you are willing to travel. I always get a bed in a dorm room, and prices for dorms are pretty similar to Southeast Asia prices. Hotels seem to cost a bit more, but I think one can find a decent room by the pyramids for $25-$40 a night. In my opinion, the Airbnb's here (or at least in Cairo) are not very good quality for the price. I can find some really nice and decently priced Aibnbs all over Southeast Asia, in South America (Argentina for example), or even places like Spain. When I compare the quality and price for what is available here in Cairo to abroad, I think abroad is better. And tour packages are always SO expensive in Egypt, especially compared to what the prices are in reality to do those things. It's just the ease and convenience of not having to navigate Egypt on one's own, but prices are crazy for most tours, hence I almost never take them. Only when I can't do something on my own do I agree to take a tour (like going to certain National Desert Parks where you need permits and a guide, or going driving around in sand dunes-I am not a professional in that-best leave it to the Bedouins that are familiar with the land so you don't get stuck-or lost).

Depends on where and the quality of the place. You might find something for that price, but it probably wouldn't be very nice. Honestly I can't give much information on that, apartment hunting in Egypt is a pain in the arse, if you have an Egyptian friend that would be best to help you. Look on Olyx there you can see apartments for rent and prices (and quality-not so great usually)
