    The #VoronV0 #CoreXY Printer is somewhat of a gateway #3DPrinter for folks to get into the custom DIY printer kit scene. At $329 the Formbot kit has some nice features for the price. But the kit isn't without issues. Here's my REALLY REALLY detailed review of the kit. Be sure to check out the links below including the link to my GitHub Repo with some useful documentation for people building the kit.

    Some addendum & notes:
    Heated Bed Change: A viewer has informed me their newer kit included a pre-wired/installed thermal fuse. This simplifies the heated bed build and requires one less wago/connector if you want to wire it similarly to how I did. That's a nice QoL improvement from Formbot and something I called out in the review.
    Error: I sped up the footage of the heated bed heating and placed a timer on it in Post. As such the time shown is wrong. The actual heated bed time to 105 C is about 8min

    I bought this kit during their black Friday sale and the kit went together really well. The Kirigami bed was a bit thicker for me as well, so I had to re-print two parts with slightly looser tolerances and then it went together nicely. The documentation was spotty in some parts, but with the help of the Voron Discord, everything is up and running. Oh and I used your printer.cfg file to speed up the process, thanks! Since finishing the build I've done pressure advance and today I did input shaping, now the printer has finally become what I wanted. It prints fast while retaining quality and it stays within the limitations of the stock cooling.

      @@BallisticTechI finished the build a few days ago, and after running Ellis's test_speed macro, I panicked about the Z stepper results (which i think was likely due to my klipper config setup) and tore down the entire build thinking my bed was constrained or some other mechanical issue was at play. Printer is back up and running, and I'm going to get printing a nevermore and will install a Klipper expander. Your vids were super helpful and gave me a lot of confidence along the way.
      Some things I had worth noting (maybe?):
      1. Heated bed came with integrated fuse. So that made the wiring easy for the bed considering I wasn't using Neopixels but did use Wago's.
      2. Fuse also gave me trouble with Z height. For now I've just accepted the lost Z height with some minor filing.
      Absolutely love this machine! I'm not sure if I would go with another Formbot kit again, but money is the most important factor for me right now. So perhaps my hopeful future Trident build will end up being a Formbot kit - the downsides are pretty much worth it considering the price.

    Hey. I just landed on your channel. It is a well-done video. And I agree. The BTT pi or cb1 are easier to set up than a rasberry pi. I am considering building a V0.2 at one point. I think it is a good option for a first build. That or something like a Rook. I just wish the information was not so spread out for these voron kits. It seems like every company has their own twist on it, and they want you to follow the main voron build guide but then switch over to another few docs and then go back and forth. So I can see it being confusing for some. I remember seeing Fedor bring that up and a few other creators like Nero, etc. Just subbed, so hopefully, we will see more videos soon. Cheers

    • @BallisticTech
      @BallisticTech  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks for watching! V0.2 is a good option for a first build. Some finnicky bits as you saw in Fedors videos.
      The Voron Discord has help channels for the different printers and it's pretty helpful.
      100% agree the documentation can be frustrating. The Voron manual is pretty good but assumes a stock build.
      Then every kit manufacturer is trying to differentiate and keep up with the most common mods. Many of the mods having limited or not docs. And then the manufacturer likely has some weird specific stuff.
      Not sure what the community can do to help with this tbh. Happy building and printing once you pick a kit. Either way you go it should be fun and a good learning experience.

    I have no experience building my own printer and yet I ordered this kit. Would you say I need to buy wire strippers and crimpers? Id like to save money if I don't need it. I know you mentioned most of the cables are pre-crimped and terminated?

    • @BallisticTech
      @BallisticTech  Před 3 měsíci

      Without any modding or having anything go wrong I think it's possible to built the entire printer without having to crimp anything but I'm not sure about stripping wires
      If you follow how I did the heated bed for instance it requires cutting/stripping and using wagos to allow pulling the bed out.
      But you could technically build the bed without doing this.
      At the very least you can probably get quite far into building the printer before needing to do so.
      And evaluate if you think it would be worth it. Borrowing strippers/crimpers from a friend or going to a maker space to use some are always an option.
      They're highly recommended by the voron team as maintenance, upgrades/mods and subsequent builds will likely require them.
      Fans for instance aren't exactly a consumable with these printers but often go out on them. Buying a replacement likely won't be a 1:1 swap in.

    • @rp101aquatics6
      @rp101aquatics6 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@BallisticTech Got it that makes sense, I may have a stripping tool laying around somewhere but I was looking at the recommended crimping tools and saw that they were around 40 dollars which seemed a little steep to me haha. Are the wagos the intended method of wiring the bed? it seems odd that they wouldn't be included in the kit if that was the case. None the less which type of wago do I need to purchase?

    • @BallisticTech
      @BallisticTech  Před 3 měsíci

      @@rp101aquatics6 That's a bit of a weird thing with Voron Kits and DIY Printer Kits in general.
      There's the Voron "Spec". What their BoM says and what's in the manual.
      Then there's what the kit includes. Kirigami is a super popular mod so many kits have started including them to different degrees. Formbot only includes the frame. Other kits include the wagos, LEDs, etc...
      Then there's what an individual builder decides to build. That's based on experience, available tools/materials and really just preference a lot of time. 10 Builders with the same kit you're probably gonna see 5-10 small variations in the bed wiring.
      That's compounded a bit because Formbot has no "Spec" or instructions for this kit.
      Voron Spec is the multiple extrusion bed. No connectors for the wiring. They just pass everything straight thru to the . Technically Formbot's "Spec" based on what they give you is Kirigami Frame + pass thru wiring.

    • @rp101aquatics6
      @rp101aquatics6 Před 3 měsíci

      @@BallisticTech Is there a good/safe way to wire the bed with out wagos? I'm leaning towards getting them anyways at this point but I'd have to watch a few build guides and see how the kit is put together for the most part

    • @BallisticTech
      @BallisticTech  Před 3 měsíci

      @@rp101aquatics6 Newer kits have the thermistor integrated so that removes the need for one connection.
      Besides that you can choose to just leave the bed tethered.
      Or use any connections rated for the Wattage. I believe it's 24V and 60W so a 3-4 Amps of current.
      Inline JSTs, microfit, car style inline spade connectors. I initially used an extra spade connector but then changed to using an extra wago.
      I show the whole build process in my streams.
      I have a lot of resources on my Github repo for the printer including links to wago connectors

      As noted around @4:30 this kit was provided by Formbot for the purpose of reviewing.
      The LDO kit is available from Fabreeko, MatterHackers, West3D and others. It's generally considered one of the best kit on the market. It has quite a few value adds not available with lower end kit.
      Voron Revo with 2 nozzles, Picobilical, 100W Heated Bed, 200W PSU, metal nut bars, Kirigami wiring kit (led, wagos, thermistor pcb), what's considered by many as the highest quality motors and extrusion.
      So it's a matter of balancing the value adds vs what someone wants from a kit and their final build. To some spending money on a Voron Revo and Picobilical doesn't make sense if they're going to end up using a self-sourced hotend and go with CAN.

      @@BallisticTech I don't find Formbot on the Fabreeko website.
      I had gotten the impression that LDO had the most admired Voron kits. At over $600 for the V0, they sure are priced as being special.
      I am very glad to have found your videos and positive experience with Formbot kit as well as their much better price.
      Thanks again for your very helpful videos!

      @@BobCollins42 Fabreeko doesn't sell Formbot. Just LDO and some of their own components. I bought replacement fans and grease from Frabreeko
      Formbot is only available via their own site and AliExpress. There are links in the description of the video.
      I will be building an LDO V0 kit on stream soon if you want to see the differences.

      @@BallisticTechI am watching your video again, and I understand now and how I got confused.
      A related question: Do you know how the LDO kit is so different as to command an almost $300 higher price?
      I look forward to your LDO build videos.
      Thanks!

      @@BobCollins42 it includes a Revo Voron Edition with 2 nozzles. ~$150+ value compared to $20-65 options in the Formbot kit.
      200w PSU compared to 150w. That's to power the custom 100w bed heater in the LDO kit. Formbot kit is only 65w (which is min spec)
      Picobilical in the LDO kit is like an enhanced V0 Umbilical. It has an extra MCU connected via USB and frees up some I/O on the mainboard
      LDO extrusions and motors are considered the best by many. The rails may or may not be nicer. I know they include 1 genuine Hywin rail for the X axis.
      Pretty sure they include genuine Bondtech BMG internals and better fans than the Formbot kit does stock.
      Their Kirigami Bed is more to spec than the Formbot one. And they include things like the Kirigami neopixel LED, wagos, and a thermistor PCB.
      Probably some other things. I'll soon find out I guess. But the thing ppl mention the most is their customer service and connections to the community and Voron team. Their documentation is also considered the best and frequently updated. That does take some budget to do.
      So some specific better/different value adds. Some sentimental factors and brand appreciation. Jason the head of LDO is genuinely very nice.
      Whether the value is worth it for an individual is kinda up to them. You may not want to spend the extra if you don't need the Picobilical, Revo, Bondtech internals, etc...

    Is there a TLDR?
