- A Black jogger in Florida who cops say was detained after fitting the description of a burglary suspect in the area has now been offered a job by the sheriff. Joseph Griffin was stopped last week by Volusia County deputies because they said he matched the appearance of a man who was suspected in a burglary. “It’s just a lot going on today,” Griffin said, referring to the headlines of police shootings of unarmed Black Americans. After Griffin was let go, the sheriff offered him a job. #InsideEdition

Right! Hopefully this becomes a thing that cops NEED to start doing. Then if the person refuses to comply then it's on them whether that encounter turns ugly or not.

@Ja Gerne because he woudnt have deserved to die
Cops misidentify people, that’s not a problem. The problem is how they handle it. In this instance, they approached him politely with respect and he responded politely and respectful. There have been some instances where the wrong suspect was killed for something he didn’t do. It’s all about how you handle things.
Politely cuffing the wrong suspect is better then killing but not ok. Police regularly practice abusing civil right over actual police work and it needs to stop. No excuses!
I do love the irony of his shirt though. Regardless, if he wanted to jog in a burglar outfit fit the police dont have the right to stop him. Let alone, ID and cuff him!
Uh police deal with thugs all the time. It's either you handle them or get killed. The current resistance from black people just made the jobs of all policeman harder. Imagine if that was really a criminal, the police would be shot & would have died if they approached everyone like this.

An officer can absolutely detain persons under reasonable suspicion during the course of an investigation (such as looking for a suspect); reasonable suspicion in this case would be justified by appealing to the description given to the officers and the persons proximity to the location the crime was reported to have occurred.
This is the same as a patrol officer pulling over a vehicle matching the description of one that is involved in a recent crime; there’s nothing wrong with a person owning that car, but the officer can absolutely pull that car over to see whether it’s the people they’re looking for.
The standard needed (legally) in the US for an officer to detain someone is known as reasonable suspicion (and there’s lengthy explanations online describing exactly what that standard is; it seems excessive to write it all here).

@I P How long has BLM been around and how long has this been an issue? The police were acting in a humane fashion because of our current climate. Imagine if they thought they 100% had the right guy. The police usually get physical, then investigate and let's be honest it's easier to just say you have the right guy than go through an investigation and keep looking.
I P it’s called research and learning, but ok.
I P Breonna Taylor was shot in her sleep. I think it’s been established that cooperating also doesn’t guarantee you won’t be harmed either, which is an issue. Some people cooperate and still get slammed on the ground, thrown in a headlock, tasered, kicked, etc. That’s not brainwashing, that’s a literal reality and it’s always been this way. You’re just now being able to see it.
