This guy really knows what it takes to be a superstar. He wasn't nothing much physically as a player but his mind and skills... thats what he seeks into kids when looking for the next superstar. I have to thank him he saw something special on Pau Gasol back in the day too, and decided to give him the chance to be a dog in memphis. And then convinced the Lakers to go for him when they needed someone to help Kobe.
Pau and West truly struck gold with each other.

I have to check you on that. Jerry West for a 60s player was very athletic. I can't remember where but I've heard not only himself but others talk about West as a very good athlete, not just a skillful player. If you're interested you can probably still find some of those articles/interviews.
Jerry West never drafted Pau Gasol. Gasol was drafted in 2001 and Jerry West became a GM in 2002.

Know Jerry personally from working for him on golf courses for years. Freakishly competitive and he loves football. He could draft a better football team than anybody in the NFL. I've heard him talk about college football players taken in second and third rounds and they are stars. I saw him get pissed and shoot a 29 on the back nine. THE COURSE RECORD IS SIXTY. He was an old man. Bunch of guys were talking Qbs one time West looked at them like they were marshmallows. He told them Russell Wilson would be the best in the draft and just mocked them, when they disagreed. Watched him literally explain why Robert Griffin wouldn't last with his body type. Not his style of play mind you, his body type. He said certain guys could run and throw and survive. He's a frigging genius. The real deal. Hope he stays healthy forever. đ. By the way West thought Vlade was a truly gifted big. He also thought he was lazy as hell. Peace out.

You cant fault the Suns too much, Ayton was just the perfect spot for the Suns in 2018, they desperately needed a center and he looked like he would give you 20/12 right out the gate. Kings passing on Luka was truly one of the dumbest moves I've ever seen. Even the Grizzlies choosing JJJ over Luka was stupid too.
Definitely agree that ayton looked like he would go #1, but the ceiling of a team with Luka, booker, a healthy warren, bridges and Holmes is really scary..and they had oubre, ariza, melton, Crawford, JacksonâŠthat team dynamic changes completely adding someone like Luka

Luka was drafted before Jackson. And Bagley looked like a stud in college. I still believe in him, I just don't think the Kings know what they're doing with their pecking order

Luka DonÄiÄ was actually the third pick in 2018 NBA draft, rather than the fifth, as Jerry West misstates here. DonÄiÄ was selected by the Atlanta Hawks who had already traded the third pick to the Dallas Mavericks for the fifth pick and a 2019 first round pick.
Thus, had the Hawks kept their #3 pick, they could have had Luka. Instead, they got Trey Young, one of the more prominent errors by a GM in the last decade. đ

Only a handful of people in the NBA know how to evaluate a player. West is one of the best in that. Rest are doing the job thanks to nepotism or they married well. Any scout worth his salt would pick Luka. It's not a body beauty contest.

ummmm.. he was the GM of a Lakers organization (1982-2000) that went to 8 WCFs and won 4 titles... I think he did ok for himself..

Player Perception, bias and expectation is different for all the teams. Accordingly, they VALUE some things more than others. e.g. ANTI-EUROPEAN ( soft ) bias. Kobe and Doncic both played overseas.

Ben Simmons in the right situation has the tools exactly what Jerry West describes here. Philadelphia 76ers selected him at the right spot unlike Suns (or 4 other teams) not selecting Luka. Philadelphia having another star clouded the thinking process and selected a different path going forward. The other players injury history had lot to do with this as he is also further along the growth phase. Trying to keep Simmons as a side kick during this phase is about to make Philadelphia loose their priced possession for almost nothing.
I wouldn't even bring up Philly in this situation. Only draft they blew in recent years was taking Fultz (should've grabbed Tatum).
So 80% of the video was about Kobe and the last 10 seconds was about Luka. The bait.
That decision not to draft Luka based on clear bias and europhobia/low key racism, is another lesson to American society about how you always eventually lose when you behave this way. Another lesson that will undoubtedly not be learned.
