- We're celebrating Lake Street Dive's new album Free Yourself Up with a series of concert releases. Here is What I'm Doing Here as performed by Lake Street Dive and the NEC Gospel Ensemble in Jordan Hall, written by Rachael Price '07 and arranged by Nedelka Prescod.
Lake Street Dive band members feel strongly about the importance of their NEC education. “It’s so important to really know technique and theory-these are such a gift for existing in a world of pop and rock and roll. These allow us to compose and improvise … we’re so lucky to have had this from NEC,” says band member Bridget Kearney.
Mike Olson continues, “We’ve taken our NEC jazz education, tucked it under our arm, and are running as fast as we can … We work really fast and efficiently-we have this framework in which we can work. We all speak the same language at a very high degree, and that comes from NEC.”
After meeting while students at NEC in the early 2000s, Lake Street Dive has catapulted to stardom. The foursome-vocalist Rachael Price '07, trumpet/guitar player Mike Olson '05, stand-up bassist Bridget Kearney '08 Tufts/NEC, and drummer Mike Calabrese '07-have filled major concert venues all over the country, and have been seen and heard on NPR, "A Prairie Home Companion," and everywhere music is heard.

To me, the sign of a great vocalist is one who doesn’t resort to vocal gymnastics to show off how good they are. They lay back just a little bit. But when the emotion of the song calls for it, they take a deep breath and unleash hell. That’s Rachael Price for you in a nutshell. She’s holding back but by the ending she’s in her power. She’s absolutely phenomenal.
couldn't agree more
Ryan Hall Believe me I just got here. U articulated as best as I could ever hope to! Thank you.
That is one highly accurate observation you've got there. She doesn't put it all out there all the time, so she's still got some surprises left when she needs them. The acoustics in this church made for a nice change from her regular killer sound environment. The choir also adds a nice touch.
Let’s be very careful with those observations they come off very offensive and borderline racist before you get your underwear in a knot. Answer this question for me as good as she and the band are why are they not on the radio or in bigger arenas or even on the Howard Stern show?? the record companies would say this behind closed doors, we can’t sell them. She sounds too ethnic in Laymans term she sounds.”Black” those comments you are making are the same people that said that about Miles Davis and John Coltrane they would rather Glenn Miller‘s band.. the singing gymnastics as you call it is just”Flava” oh, excuse me flavor. but we do agree on one thing, we both agree. She is phenomenal, and I love the bands music. And I’m quite sure you do as well.
She is extraordinary, I just I Can't stop to listen to her !
I could listen to Rachael Price sing the IRS Tax Code and feel like I've been to church. What a voice!
I grew up with artists like Etta James, Carla Thomas and Otis Redding. This is simply outstanding. Best thing I've heard for a good while
This is sooooo beautiful.... i just bought my VIENNA TICKETS for the tour 2025, See you there
Oh my god the bass player and those harmonies and those legs!!
LSD singing in the bathroom "nick of time"
LSD singing with a choir "what I'm doing here"
LSD singing with a chamber ensemble "these days"
these experiences have enriched me made my life better
this has been fulfilling in a deep soulful way
this healing power that sound has on our lives
setting our vibration to a higher tone
repairing our world
I didn't know these guys 2 hours ago .What a talented bunch. I have to rethink my fav female singers of all time. Always had Linda and Jonie but now there's some doubt. This is the best performance I've ever heard. Good to be alove
Judith Durham is a contemporary of Linda and Jonie and is equally majestic. Linda would point you to Patsy Cline.
But multi Grammy winner , Mac Arthur Fellow Rhiannon Giddens is unbelievably good.
Wow what a voice she has, she blows away most female singers by a long shot.
Just as good in 2023 as it was when it was first recorded.
Amazing song and performance. Thank you, one and all.
Already missing that trumpet, so glad for all these videos
Agree on trumpet!
chills from start to finish
Ella, Aretha and Rachel. Just beautiful.
Rachael Price is just priceless
Awesome! I heard once that Rachel never does a song the same way twice. This is a great example.
Rachael is back to her roots. There is a great CZcams video of Rachael performing with her church choir when she was only 12 years old. She sings the solo and sings and moves like a youthful version of the Rachael she has become. Absolutely one of the best vocalist today. Just my humble opinion!
thomas medeiros the maturity and power she sang with in that video just blew me away. She’s simply a smaller version of the powerhouse she is today.
Where is that video? I want to see it and I cannot find it! Do you have a link please?

This is what this song deserved...a gospel choir backup.....and from her peeps at NEC....doesn't get any better! If this song does not make you tear up, you are dead...... :)
straight from heaven
Oh my, musical perfection. Thank you.
Yes
This is a masterpiece from beginning to end!
I love the moment at 0:30 when the singer in the background shakes her head and rolls her eyes, as if to say, "never in a million years will I be able to sing like that".
The studio version enlightened me, this; this was a whole new experience, I loved every nuance and phrase as it was projected. I am so impressed with so much great talent out there, being a music lover many genres, I always get surprises here on you tube, this again blew me away thanks to all involved every one brought it together!
Love me some Rachael, but Bridget is super talented, too. Such a great bassist.
...AND good singer...
and writes most of their original songs too (Bridget i mean)
Just amazing she is awesome, here voice is wonderful.
Amazing on many levels! Obviously, Rachael and LSD are phenomenal as always but the looks on the faces of the ensemble members is priceless. The look of joy to be a part of something so special. Truly amazing😍!!
Incredible vocal control. Beautiful arrangement. Thank you for sharing this gem.
What lucky students. And, I would say the four grads are very lucky, too!
DAMN! she is SO FRICKIN GOOD it's scary!
Truly one of a kind voice
She is one of my favorite singers!
SERIOUS PIPES ! ! !
They are an amazing individually and as a collective!!!
Ms Price, You and Your Band mates have raised the bar with this one .
It's so awesome that the girl with the headband (just to the right of Rachael) keeps making that "Damn, so good," face. It really is that good.
absolutely brilliant! - goosebumps
wow, just wow. this totally stopped by evening. the whole thing, everyone on stage. thanks.

Fantastic
Would love a recording of this
Great singer, a talent.
Just perfect :)))
Just found you--love it so much.
Even better than the studio recording. It it was great.
beautiful song ...:-)
Beautiful version :)
Damn, when the Lord was handing out talent he gave Rachael Price a quadruple portion.
That was most excellent❤❤
Soul at it´s best. Do it again!
Girl with the head band = me when I here Rachael sing 😮😯😶🙃🙂😊😀😅😭😭
magnifique interprétation. Rachel est une grande dame. Il serait nécessaire qu'elle visite une fois l'Europe.
She wrote this song
Makes my heart sing.
God damn! That sounds amazing.
Tears :,)
Rachael can sing anything!
Hey Bridget, I love your hair down. You're beautiful.
Thank You
Best band in the world
more of this please
Wow ... X infinity.
Calabrese wore his best shoes! Outstanding!
Brilliant, come to Poland sometime.
That's a 9 million out of 10.
WOW!
Voilà comment transmettre des émotions. Lake Street Dive est un grand groupe. Rachel Price une grande chanteuse. Quant au choeur qui les accompagnait, il est divin.
😍😍😍
Thank you for an entertaining performance. I found you while wandering around and scrolling through CZcams. Seriously, nobody knows what I'm doing here. Most nights, I don't have a clue. But I found you guys. Now, I have LSD t-shirt and stickers. I'm not that faithful a fan. So, no promises. But, bravo! I won't single anyone out, because all of you together present this sound.
Bridget and Rachael are Gods.
Gawd. Damn.
Kills me when she hits that...."Beleeeeeve meee!..."
Phwoar!!
I love how mcduck stands ramrod straight. Such a cutie
She’s been raised on gospel music
The look on the girls face at 0:28 says it all! That's what Rachael does to a listener.
wow
She's so damn god!
People who don't know LSD must be like "do we really need the tambourine player?" Why am I crying
I'm not messing around with other fools. Is venue was very familiar to me because I grew up in Boston and actually was in the back of the New England conservatory of music fire escape that I
Smoked my first joint. And that's just one story from the ass kicking life that old Liam led.
You suck
👀👏👏👏👌😘💯
check out The Queen of Carmel...duet with Eric Dozier and the Bahai Choir. You'll have to put up with him, but it's worth it. Terrific I phone recording
Is that the vulf jingle at the beginning ?
YES
I wonder why McDuck doesn't always play that perfectly on the trumpet. He's clearly skilled, but maybe he hasn't practiced certain songs enough. I don't know.
Utterly gobsmacking, even for agnostics. Just wonderful!Hopefully they don't become mainstream dancers around the golden calf of the big big big financial industry that calls itself "Christian".
Bridget, bass, this moment. Look at the expressions. These are no tools of modern music monopolies. Here's some other soul filled excursions for your rainy day youtube explorations:

I've been the neighbor upstairs after these concerts. This is living. This is love. This is music.
McDuck was integral to the sound. When he left they lost something. Rachel Price is the best female singer in the world but the ensemble was definitely part of the vibe. Things change. No problem. But I want to note that McDuck was awesome as we see here in this video. Bridget Kearney is also central to the sound and she remains part of its allure. Still, I long to hear Rachel sing anything. Here she’s at her best. 😊
McDuck's creativity and artistry was (and is, probably) phenomenal, but the new guy ain't no slouch, and he's actually a better guitar player. With a group this good, fans just gotta roll with the changes.
McDuck….you are missed.
I LOVE LSD, but its sad they don't have a single banger on their new album worth doing with this ensemble
This was from November '17
what do you consider bangers from their other LPs?
ryan sullivan - LSD is an illegal psychedelic drug. I wouldn’t advertise the fact that you love it.
It's not their best album, but I can find a couple songs I would play....
why didn't they just raise the mic a few inches so they don't have to do that awkward bend forward?
Awaoh so cool 😍
But with no trumpet no bass no percussion but much more Hammond ! 😃
Rachel Price is priceless and this is an amazing song. This is a studio version where she really, and I mean really, let's it all hang out. czcams.com/video/lcUeothSPyc/video.html
