Check the description of this video for a link to a similar video showing you how to use a regular laptop hard drive. Just keep in mind that only certain drives are compatible so make sure to read the notes in that video too for a compatibility list. Thanx.
I like how you drove the screwdriver through the warranty sticker. ....like a boss!
@gbales84 It does not sound like anything related to the drive, however you can easily pull it out and try it. Is it doing the same with other games?
Thank you! My son bought the game Destiny without seeing the "hard drive" required icon. I bought this hard drive from GameStop, followed your instructions and it worked like a charm!
panthermom111 same!
This kid is my hero, I didn't even know my xbox 4GB had that sercret opening.
Good job bro, keep up the good work.
do you steal have the xbox 360
@messihenry1410 I've had mixed success on this, my profiles came over but some say I cannot use them... the game saves worked however.
Had a white Xbox Elite with a Fujitsu drive and put it into an Xbox 360e. Did everything in the video and worked like a charm! I used weather stripping instead of foam, which has adhesive on one side to help it stay in place. Thanks!
Thanks for a fantastic "how-to" video...pure focus, clear handling...and silence is a wonderful thing!
Amazing, this saves so much money. And quirks just as well as a brand new HDD.
Thanks! I just got the Slim. I was able to move my 60GB hard drive from my older 360. Your video was most helpful!
@OriginalNoseBleed Yes, it will accept any size drive with the XBOX firmware (from another XBOX)
@shaamRKO Yes the 4GB Slim version has 4GB of Flash memory on the main board, it is not removable and does not occupy the hard drive slot. So when you add a drive, you end up with two memory storage devices, the 4GB and the added hard drive. Hope that helps
@LegoFilmKid Yes, you can access both memory devices and copy data from one to another as needed.
@ICYASIAN95 It's a HDD, the one I ripped out of the original XBOX 360 HDD. You can use any of the original XBOX HDDs of any size, just need to remove them from the housing.
Worked perfectly and saved me the money of having to buy the newer version hard drive, thanks!
@Nev6999 Yes absolutely, it will work with any size hard drive from a previous XBOX setup.
Kinda feel better after watching this. Thought the 360 S came with a case for the hard drive. I know it does, but is an add on for a PRICE! Thanks for This!!!
OMG Thank you so much. My old Elite Disc Drive is breaking down on me and I'm gonna buy a cheap 4GB Slim and do this ! I WILL NOT give up my 4 years on my 250GB Hardrive . Can't wait :)
@dom0kun20 No not at all, it's there to stop the drive from moving around. Cardboard or fabric would work too, as long as it's not a conductive material.
I thought it was only a rumor but it's true that helps me out in the long run thank you!
Will the Xbox still use the save data on the internal flash memory? Because I didn't have an original 360 but I want more memory. So basically will the 360 format it?
@ptenoury I've been told Yes, but I have not tried it. Apparently you need a specific drive and need to load specific firmware on it. Might be easier to pick up a used XBOX 360 "fat" hard drive and perform the mod in this video...
awesome idea. i knew this before but came hear for refreshment on doing it again thanks bro
That's what the sticky tape tab is for... if you missed that, use a pair of needle nose pliers and cover the metallic tips with a cotton shirt or something to avoid contact between the pliers and circuit board under the drive.
@XxLetterbombsXx Yes, as long as it is from another XBOX (any generation)
BEST ONE IVE SEEN YET !!!!! good job
i give you MUCH respect for this vid man
There’s no sound but this video is perfect Thankyou :) from a 4gb Xbox to a 120gb the tape was a genius idea helped lower it into place easier ready to be popped into place
@shaamRKO You can always slide the 250GB hard drive out and replace it with a larger one. The drives do need to be former XBOX drives or new XBOX drives as they have a custom firmware the XBOX will only accept.
@l33tpete Correct, google "XBOX hard drive firmware" and you'll find tutorials on doing just that. I have never tried it however. I believe it has to be a Western Digital Scorpio drive...
@shaamRKO Correct, the 4GB slim uses flash memory and the hard drive slot is empty. Mine was the 4GB slim too, saved me $100 having the old XBOX hard drive from my old system!
i just got done doing this and its 2016 and it work i really recommend this method
yuh r one amazing guy... was just goin thru the paces of having to purchase a larger memory xbox but bcuz of u... i didnt.. followed wat u did and nw battlefield 3 i a sinch.. thnks man
you sir are a brilliant man!!!!! thank you so much now I don't have to go buy a damn xbox specific HDD, can even get a second hand 120G sata drive.
thank you for this video, so I know my old xbox 360 hard drive also will work for the new xbox 360 slim that I bought, thank you very much.I'm Vietnamese, electronics very expensive in my country, so I found this clip very helpful :))
this also works with the 60 Gb hard drive just did it thanks so much for this bro!!!!!
Thanks a lot, it worked on my slim mini with no problems
NICE vid man ... clear and to the point ..
@R3DMAU5 you don't, you could cut up a mouse pad or use a piece of foam to use as a shock absorber for the HDD
@Ballmazing It won't overheat, you're only covering the bottom compared to the drive Microsoft sells for the XBOX slim which is completely enclosed. You could even use a folded up paper towel... an old sock :-)
WHOA!!! I didn't know that you could put a computer Hard drive into a Xbox 360 THXXXXXXXXXXXXXXx
The drive would be supported by the SATA plug on the main board which can put stress on the connector, specially if you move the XBOX around from time to time, not worth leaving this out, even a piece of cardboard to provide support would suffice.
your are amazinnnnnnnnnnng , you have save my life for BF3
Best tutorial yet, taught me things I wouldn't have even thought about. Great job!
Thank you so much! I almost died when I saw it wouldn't fit, then I saw this video. :)
@AgentCell Torx T-6. You can buy a Husky 6 piece Torx set at Home Depot for $6.
Great tutorial, very useful.
@emanuel2442 It's isn't critical, but you'll notice the drive is rather loose and if you plan to bring your XBox around to friends houses or from room to room I would suggest you use something to cussion the drive. I used an old mousepad but you can use a sponge, cardboard or anything similar...
Now here i come battlefild 4
Thanks man! Gunna try this out! Definitely would save me the extra 75 bucks!
Thank you for the vid. Just done it to mine. Saved me slit if money
Any of the XBOX drives work. Worst thing I've run into is some existing save data or accounts from previous XBOX may not work on new one, that can happen regardless of the drive size.
U SIR, UR A LIFESAVER. THANK YOU.
Sick im hyped on this! I have a ps3 that doesnt work anymore but the hard drive is fine...I am recieving my xbox pretty soon and was wondering if my ps3 20gb hdd would work? I read you need a specific firmware but still just wondering...
Great tutorial with step by step.. Thanks.
Yes. Moving around the console could easily disconnect it without some sort of pad to keep it still.
@JeffroTV Yep :-)
Oh I agree with you. Third party and aftermarket parts are always, typically, cheaper. This is true with almost any thing. Take for example, the radiator on my car, through the dealership it would have cost me 3 times as much to buy the aftermarket equivalent. In addition, Microsoft will guarantee that their products will work with their stuff, but will not make the same promise for aftermarket products. Hence, your extra dollars pay for the warranty.
thanks a bunch! great video, and well shot!
Have you experienced any weird tearing with games while you're playing? I have Forza 4 installed on my 250 gb harddrive and ever since I had to upgrade to the slim Xbox its been putting these vertical lines randomly throughout my screen on occasion, then it goes away. It looks like a long line of dead pixels or something. Never did this before with my old xbox, I can't figure out what's going on. Loose connection? Issue with reading from harddrive?
You shouldn't put foam inside your Xbox. It may heat up or even damage your console.
So question. you just need an old xbox 360 harddrive, you install it in the manner you showed and there is nothing else required? is that it? you turn it on and it will work?
You can. You have to have 8 gigs free to "Install" the game since it's sooooo big. Kind of like installing a game on the PC, you'll still need the disc to play. Or you can just buy a USB Flash drive
Saved me a trip to the game store.
Can i ask, is it safe to use it without case by adding the foam or shock absorver??
Because the temperatures of the Harddrive i mean...
After this, do I have to install softwares or something like that?
Would I be able to do this with a 20gb, 60gb, or 120gb xbox 360 hard drive? Great vid btw
Thanks bro this helped:)
You can use the 2.5 inch drive but it needs to be specific models plus you have to do a few things to mod the firmware so that it will work.
@rodneywon
The dashboard is not run from the hard drive.
How do you think the old "Arcade" consoles ran with no hard drive?
I'm getting my new Xbox soon. Yes that what I'am needing the same...
good video, I hope it works ^^
I really like Tutorials with no voice!
im kinda clueless to which hdd is compatible with the xbox. So you;re saying any 2.5" 5400rpm hdd will work? or is there anything else that needs to be done?
@gbales84 I think it's your TV. I had the same problem and I don't think it's your console or HDD. Check if you have warranty because the TV is going to get worse.
@tuvix72 will adding the foam cause the hard drive to overheat? If not, what other materials can I use to stabilize it that won't mess it up/cause it to overheat?
will the mouse pad being used as the shock absorber mess up the bottom part of the hard drive since there is no casing on it?
you can just buy a case for the hard drive for 10 bucks on ebay, then theres no need for a shock absorber. And i have a question, i heard this reformates the old hard drive? I am wanting the white special console but its only 4gb. If i put my old hard drive into it, i dont want to loose all my memory. does it really reformates it? Or can i keep all my data?
The hard drive case for this size drive is sold very cheap. Do not use the work around seen here. The slim HD case will ensure it will not move or vibrate.
works like a champ thanks!
Didnt use the tape, just bought a case from china for 00.01 with free shipping via ebay, fit right in and worked great, upgraded to a 320Gb
yes....as long as it is SATA drive...no warranty lost...evr is fine
So you just take the 4 gb hardrdive and put it in a 250 gb casing enclosure thing and it works? memory space and everything? also, does this work with the 320 gb?
A few n00b questions for the guys that have done this: 1) Is the original Xbox 360 20GB drive compatible? A couple of comments here indicated otherwise; 2) Is all the save data/gamertag detail seamlessly integrated when then new drive is in, or do you have to do more work to get it to show? Thanks!
What's the website did you go to to buy the hard drive case for the 360 slim?
This guy is the MAN!!! Saved me money and hassle.......niceeeeeeeee!
I did this before myself but I never thought about using tape and a mouse pad like that.
Thanks a bunch bro it works
will my older xbox 360 games work on the xbox slim? like, fable 2 and 3 or grears of war, etc? and will i be able to use games i have already downloaded on my hard drive? just curious.
i got and old hdd from a friend and i wanted to format it when it asks for the serial does it have to be from his xbox or mine ?
Which spanner you use ? :) I can not open one bolt of The HARD Drive o.O :/
@kphoenix96 You must have T5 and T6 screw drivers to remote the HDD from the xbox 360 fat casing.
so if i save my stuff on the hard drive, put in the slim xbox, it should be there? like all my games would be there and my profile?
instead of using the foam/cardboard/mousemat idea, you could just buy a harddrive case off eBay - it makes the 2.5" HDD that you are fitting here into the correct size for the new slim 360's.My mate bought one and it works perfectly...no more dodgy looking foam in your xbox ;)
Yeah that's the thing microsoft and the game outlets don't mention that nearly 7 gig is reserved for system memory caught me out years ago when they 1st released it. On a 20 gig HDD you will only ever get 13. something in total as we have all now found out lol
is this the alternate for buying the 120 or 320 GB Media Hard Drive from Microsoft? Like HDD and the Media Hard Drive is it the same ?
will any old hard drive work or is there a spcific one you have to use.
Hi i can't seem to get this to work,
I did everything you said and have the harddrive in, but when i try to download the high def thing for BF3 (which is why i did it) it still says i only have my 4gig memory unit.
Thoughts?
I did this with a 20gb old hdd I had thanks!!!
yo so if i go out and buy a 4gb slim can i use my hard drive from my 250gb slim and ill have my profiles/ gold membership? or is the 4gb hard drive built in?
