  • Bachmann's Class 40 has received some new toolings. But how does the old tooling hold up? Well, surprisingly well. That doesn't mean anything good for the re-releases of that tooling, though. Let's talk about it.

I should state that I later found out my Bachmann Class 57 also had wheels clipped in place, as well as a clip-together base keeper.
Equally, the older 8-pin Bachmann Class 40 is only driven by the outer two sets of bogie wheels! In effect, it's a 1Bo1-1Bo1, not a 1Co-Co1! The derailments of that model can be explained by the stiffness of it's pony, which seemingly has less clearance than the newer Class 40.

      Now you just need D261.

The fun part is that Hornby's D261 is an EE Type 3, not a Type 4.

I like the class 40 in real life. The preserved ones look magnificent when running on the main line. That bogie set up looks like something that Heljan would make.

You own a hornby Dart? I didn't know those actually were owned by people.

I’m convinced they aren’t real. They are an urban legend like seagull nests.

Always loved the 40 - what a beast - but a definitive model has, so far, never been manufactured. Accurascale?

For the prototype, it is for me one of the most british-aesthetic-styled diesel engine, a must-have if you are in classical UK diesels. I've just bought one, will run it this weekend.
For the model, as you said : big jump up in the price, minimal changes in the features... Bachmann on the scroogy side here, especially when I compare what Accurascale had sold me with their class 37...
Thanks for the video anyway ! Very instructive.

Nice! I got D213 for Christmas, excellent runner and the detail is fantastic as well. The sound is great quality and captures the 40's whistle very well

Very good review! Not the biggest fan of 40s myself but they do look good running on your layout. If you want to increase you diesel fleet I recommend getting a class 20 or a class 25 or the class 27 you mentioned at the end in BR green to match most of your other diesel. They are good runners usually and they look good with any train behind them.

Its odd that the bogies are clip in, especially when Lima did there bogies with screws! I waa about to also complain that not all the wheels are geared as i thought it was the same bogie set up as the class 45 peaks but seems im wrong. These locos definitely need a rerailer to get them on the track with all the bogie wheels flapping about if youve got poor eyesight.
P.s. ill take your Hornby Dart for a small loan of £3 if you don't want him 😂

@@FlyingScott wait actually it’s like you got the clean class 40, then the weathered one shows up like “hey hey, you you, I don’t like your [class 40], no way, no way, I think you need a new one, hey hey, you you, I could be your [class 40]!”
I don’t know how my brain entirely works, might be something to do with being Aussie :P
