Honestly the white board and the whole set up is kinda what makes it. If it was some fancy green screen production it just wouldn’t be the same.

When Shannon announced he was retiring the white boards I was shocked and I'm glad it didn't stick. It's quite comforting to me and is part of his brand. No one else could do what he does and gets taken as seriously as he does. I don't know if he's aware of how many content creators were inspired by his old school approach.

Favorite place for hockey news because it feels like you care and you’re doing this because you feel like doing it. There is something strangely authentic about having a whiteboard over the high production values that news media have and the attempts at replicating that by some other hockey channels.

As a North Vancouver guy for the first 34 years of my life, I totally know what "not leaving town for years" is like. Where are you gonna go? Hours into the Fraser Valley to be...where? 100 Mile House? And The Wack is a long way away from Downtown. I've been following you since that first great Vegas year, when Gallant was the coach and they became my team. Because in the meantime I had moved to the US, the Canucks had gone to the finals in 2011 and I had had no idea since nobody even whispers about hockey in the south. This year I've been following close as the home town does well.
Some thoughts. First, I watched the Markiplier video yesterday as well and am not surprised at your empathy with his feelings. Those of us with long term grindy projects know how it feels. You love the work, but there is no time off. If you get off the rollercoaster you risk becoming irrelevant and forgotten about quickly. Not to mention income depends on it.
Second, I've deliberately watched some games played by other teams than Van/VGK/Tor (WHY am I developing a fanship for the Leafs?! What is wrong with me?) and seen these other teams make the same mistakes the Canucks do when they're in a slump. Giveaways, can't hit the net, not great effort. It's not just your team, folks. Since you're only looking at one team you think it's only them...but I assure you it is not.
Trying to explain to someone who is not from Vancouver how the town lives and dies on how the Canucks played can be challenging ;-)
Third, the game feels like it has really changed since the 90s when I last really focused on it. I'm similar in age as you, Shannon, watched 1982 as a kid, 1994 with beer, missed out on 2011 as explained above...we'll see what happens this year and I'll be watching. The game feels faster, less dump and chase. Something about how the neutral zone is used.
Anyway, glad you're here. Your channel is one I often watch late at night, and I look forward to those Saturday night power rankings!

You've mentioned this in previous videos that the more hockey you've watched, the less "hateful" you've become of the teams you don't like. This is something that's really rubbed off on me. Of course I have teams I would never cheer for, but since I've tuned in to more games, the pure, unadulterated disgust for those franchises and their fanbases has all but disappeared. So thanks for helping to mellow me out and become more of a "hockey" fan than that of specific teams.

I think for example Buffalo has had that because people don't want to play there - because the team was weak for a long time and the terrible weather. A few thoughts:
    1) I think your goal of being an ‘every NHL fan’ approach is great.
    2) The lack of extreme emotions in your videos is a huge plus. As you point out, there’s more than enough of that in the world and media, today. That said, your delivery isn’t boring. It’s relaxing.
    3) The fact that you have teams that you cheer for without gloating when they do great is a positive. It allows you to demonstrate a fan’s frustration when those teams aren’t doing well. If one is a long term fan of a team, the days of being frustrated far out number the happy times. In summary it makes you more relatable.
    4) If you ever wanted to reduce your work load (less note taking) the daily game reviews could be reduced to a few key observations for each game, or per period of that game. That is rather than the detailed game descriptions that you currently provide. Just one person’s suggestion.
    Thanks for the great work.

Well, you certainly have the right personality for it (leading a channel on CZcams), Shannon. And Yvonne is a nice stand in...as are the cats and rabbit. You seem to have the right feel for how long any given addition works or doesn't. Even in my advanced age, I still realize-no matter how bored-hockey is a sport. With or without it, the world keeps moving on...the Earth keeps spinning...and we keep polluting/destroying everything. Anyway, with that said, I admit to being more excited to visit your site when the Kings actually win a game. Yet, considering their history (even with two Stanley Cups), for 50+ years, they seem to exist to produce heart attacks and disappointment and disgust. What feels so strange for this season-and, yes, they still come up short with their GM's decisions-one night, they will shock you with a good win, and then follow up with an errant loss. Alas, nothing has really changed, with the exception of a really good ownership group. Now, let's see if Blake can avoid being a disappointment-again-as he was as a player who bolted for Colorado. Note: I suddenly hate myself for having added Vegas to my list of teams I pull for. They weren't supposed to outplay teams that've been around for most of my life> rl

Keep on being yourself and doing what you're doing, Shannon. That's why we subscribe. For people who want the swearing and the roaring and shouting and waving of hands and the hyperbole, there's lots of other places to go for that. The rest of us DON'T want it, that's why we come here.
I always say it's a lot like just getting together with a friend for coffee and chatting about hockey. That's the way I want to keep it. Love the white boards, love the puck boards, love the jerseys and especially love the power rankings. Those and a nice pot of tea are how I start my Sunday morning.

You and your videos is a big part why I stay invested in the NHL. You have a great way to make alla about hockey easy to understand, and like how you can put your feelings into the work and still not feel biased. Great, great work! Thanks a lot for what you do!

Same thing happened with me when I started Dating my wife. We'd been friends for a couple years who would go out with mutual friends and sing Karaoke but I was in sort of the same sate as you, and then when we hit it off and started dating she was constantly wanting to talk to me online when we couldn't see one another and I found myself unable to leave my computer.
At the time her friend (who was a mutual friend of mine) became my room mate and she kept coming over austensibly to see her friend, and then more and more it was me she cared about seeing. When her mom (who she lived with at the time) found out about this and about me she said "Why don't you go live with him then?" and so at 26 that's how I ended up with the first ever girlfriend who lived with me (only my 5th ever girlfriend and only the first one to last more than 2 months)
This was 2010, We married in 2012, Moved into a basement suite in a house her mom and grandma lived in, her mom and us Bought our own houses in 2016 when grandma passed, Had our son in 2019, and moved into a new house with a basement suite in it where this time her mom lives in the basement suite in 2020.
Here we are Happy as ever
Great Job on the channel, Happy for you, Happy for Yvonne, for all your kids, and for the success that all of your favorite teams (But especially the Canucks) are having this year,

I'm a new subscriber, and absolutely love the production, tone, neutrality, and everything else you described. I'm a Bruins fan, but also just love to watch the sport, so the lack of homerism is not only not off-putting, it's something I can identify with. Also, you should take breaks if you need them! (As much as I selfishly love your content haha!)

The reason for The Hockey Guy not swearing is actually because of "The War of 1812." There was a law passed at that time that nobody west of Toronto was permitted to use any 'colorful language' for any reason. It was actually an ammendment to the law adopting the potato as the legal currency of Canada.

As someone who has used this channel as my "guidebook to hockey" so to speak, I have to say i owe you a lot. I decided to get into hockey about four years ago when my football team (Houston Texans) became the joke of the league. I noticed the Dallas Stars were a team worthy of respect, and decided I needed that in my life. Now, I'm a rabid hockey fan, suffused with the zealotry of the new convert! You've been a big part of that.
I only worry that mentioning Star Trek IV will maybe lead to someone watching Star Trek V, and personally, I'd hate to find out I was the one responsible for inflicting that on someone.

Back in the day, (In the '70's) my closest friend used to keep stats on EVERY player in the NHL in a notebook. Recording the stats in pencil so he could change them as the season progressed. It was basically a hobby for him, but also his extreme interest in hockey. I thought, man that's a lot of work! I became more understanding when I started to play hockey & he & I would Ref a few games in the local 'Duffer' league. I would say that my interest & subscription to your channel is because; #1 Being a very Canadian perspective, #2 Your personal reasoning & explanations behind a given topic, #3 A trademark sense of humour combining a mix of deadpan, sarcasm & expressions. You do what you do well! Don't undo it Shannon!! Cheers from down the road in Vancouver!

I used to do the same thing. Living in NY in those days, yeah you got coverage of the Rangers & Islanders but almost nothing on the rest of the league. All you had was The Hockey News, which usually came on Friday, and the Sporting News, which was mainly a baseball paper but did give decent hockey coverage in season. Sports Illustrated was pretty useless for hockey. I used to keep a note book where I'd try to keep up to date on things like scoring leaders, but it wasn't easy. You just had to wait for the Hockey News and by the time you got it the scoring leaders were already out of date.
