How to improve your surfing only with fins :
You want to improve your surfing and you feel like you got the right board but you chose totally randomly your fins ? Wait, what ??? What did you do ??????? No worries, we are going to fix this in 5mn ;)
First, the fins are the part of a surfboard spending the most time in the water. So, no need to say that it will affect the way your board moves.
Fins can really change your approach on a wave. So if you find the right fin that matches your style of surfing, your board and the waves, It’s like putting the right Tires on a formula 1. Nothing will stop you
Let’s first figure out how a fin works :
The rake : This is the way a fin bends toward the tail. The more bent it is, the better it will be in drawn out carves. The straighter it is, the better it will pivot, which means tight turns in the pocket or big turns off the lip !
The foil : Foil is one of the more important aspects of a fin, referring to the shape of the outside and inside faces of the fin, thinnest near the tip of the fin, and thicker near the base. Altering the flow of water over the fin surface has a direct impact on the performance of the fins and board. Your central fin will always be symmetrical and convex on both sides, this is often referred to as "50/50", this offers even distribution and stability. Outside fins are typically convex on the outside faces and flat or curved inwards on the inside. The flat inside creates a solid balance of control, speed and maneuverability, whilst a curved or concaved inside maximizes lift and minimal drag, more ideal for speed and fluidity (Copy/paste)
    The base :
The wider it is, the more drive you’ll have ! But what is drive ? basically, it is the ability of maintaining speed while turning. If the base is thin, it will give you more pivot, as it will turn quicker but won’t generate as much speed as the first one
The construction : now you have loads of different names from one brand to another but the idea is the same. A stiff fin will give you more control. That is quite good in powerful surf. Then a flexible fin will give spring under the back foot as it will bend and bounce back to its initial shape. Quite good in small surf to deliver some progressive surfing !
The cant : It is the angle of the fin. The more open the fin is like this one for exemple, the more maneuverability it provides. Personally I like these kind of fins in small surf because it gets loose super easily.
On the other side, if the fin is straight, it is super good to hold a line and generate a lot of speed but it won’t be that easy to turn.
The size : Generally it depends on your weight. Brands give you instructions to choose the right size of fins depending on your weight. But sometimes, if you want to have bigger fins to generate more speed or to have more control, you can go a bit bigger.
What fin for what board ?
In small to medium waves, you need to generate speed to do manoeuvers. This means you need a board quite flat with a low to moderate rocker. But to add some sparks under your back foot, you can chose a fin that will give you maneuverability :
H2 because of the size and the angle
    Reactor because they are upright
    P with futures
In power full wave, you need a board to handle the steepness of the wave so you’ll have a board with a lot of rocker. So you can go for a fin that gives you control and hold. A fin with a bit more rake to carve hard without losing it. Or a bigger fin to gain in control
    Accelerator
    R futures
Fins can really add to your surfing. So look at what you have and check if you need to do some adjustments
