It is gratifying to see a cool, old bulletproof Westinghouse appliance saved from the landfill. On a side note, my mom worked for Westinghouse in the 1940s and 1950s and said it was one of the best places she ever worked. Employees were treated fairly and yearly all-company events such as Christmas parties and Fourth of July barbeques were fully catered and were always a good time according to my mom. Growing up we had an early 1950s Westinghouse radio that my mom won as a prize at one of these events which she cherished. She also had one of the best sewing machines I have ever seen which was also a Westinghouse (also early 1950s), and was so well made that I believe it is still in use today.

my dad had one of these as a kid. Just the washer, not the dryer. His mother hung the clothes outside. These were so ahead of their time, with the slanted tub and load scale door. If only the washer had a cool end of cycle signal like the dryer.

Holy Smokes!! I remember those washers's very well! I used to overhaul lots of them. Very dependable machines. A clutch spring is used for the wash a spin cycle, giving it that slip & grab feature with the motor running in one direction from start to finish. Very simple units Philco Bendix also used same principle.

Westinghouse was one of Americas greatest companies. Its demise in the 90s was a tragedy. The hostile take over 90s. Westinghouse sponsored a t.v. show for years and the episodes are on u tube commercials and all. Betty Furness was the spokeswoman and demonstrates the appliances . Its a blast , as she demonstrates the features and benefits of Westinghouse products. I had 64 G.E fridge that was mint. The freezer rolled out under the fridge compartment. Loved it . A shot of Freon and ran great. They don't make them like they used to.

I posted about the one I had and you were starting to work on it. Oh the person who has the shows with the Westinghouse commercials is Save The Kinescopes . Have a great day.

It helps to use a rubber mallet on the outer tub clamp, and tighten it by degrees then tap it all around...the space between the clamp n tub should be equidistant all around. Also, just a film of clear silicone works, that rtv will be a pain to work with if u are gonna replace the bearings. The boot works, I did that with mine, but I predict it will develop a rip between the 3 to nine o'clock position. Interesting fill nozzle inside the inner tub, mine had eliminated that I guess. Be very careful when u remove the motor n pump assembly. That rubber hose from pump to tub is often brittle with age and will easily crack.

Does the washer create its own hot water? Because I noticed that both cold and hot water hoses were connected to one same hose. Or does it require a hot water faucet?

    • @theetravisb
