- Windy day at Madeira Airport, and windshear was reported on the final which caused the SAS Airbus A320-251N to get a big downdraft and a huge hard landing followed by a compressor stall!
The Airplane diverted to Gran Canaria

this is a great example on how special Funchal is, and every approach requires full concentration and respect to the elements. And this happened with "just" 14 knots
People tend to think that RW05 is the most challenge, but this day showed how RW23 could be the most difficult to land!!
@@MadeiraAirport totally agree with you !
Wait for the papers to get hold of this: "PASSENGERS PANIC AS ENGINE BURSTS INTO FLAMES!!!" 😙🤗
Boeing doesn't want to tell Airbus about this one simple trick!
It was in the papers here in Sweden.
'Passengers panic as they all lose an inch in height due heavy landing'
Some papers did it lol
It’s completely normal and doesn’t really hurt the engines
Its crazy, it looked as if the plane just dropped vertically and bounced back up 😂😂
Indeed, was amazing!
Wow that was a crazy hard touch and go, and super cool capture of the compressor stall as well. Great footage as always Pedro!
Compressor stalled because of that hard hit
@@dr.jillalicecooper2587
negative. compressor stalls occur because of a loss of smooth airflow through the engine. there are other forces at work here
@@the_craptain In this case compressor stalled from a hard hit period.
@@dr.jillalicecooper2587
explain how the impact caused compressor stall. I need to hear this
@@the_craptain A hard enough hit can make anything malfunction. I watched another video yesterday and it was said that hard landing caused it. You lost, give it up lmao
Borrego Incrível desse 320NEO da SAS com compressor stall. Sempre no lugar certo à hora certa
Momento único e raro!
If I was on that plane I would need a change of pants straight after landing😂😂
Thanks for the visit!
A lot of action, crazy situation, great analysis, Mike Wood with crew... Perfect afternoon. What else could we wish for?
Was such a great day, including the right choice to change spots!!
Stunning footage of this rare event! As always, great video!
thanks for the visit mate!
WOW ... muito bem apanhado, como sempre o Pedro é o maior a nos trazer estas belas imagens ... Parabéns
Obrigado pelo elogio amigo Nuno!!
Great capture Pedro. 👍🏼
So glad you moved from your original spot. I couldn't chat today, but I had your streaming running on my TV in the kitchen & living room :)
The move of spot was amazing, right choice!!
That’s insane!!! Very glad they landed safely in the end.
They went to Gran Canaria just in case, the airplane was flying a couple of days after :)
Amazing footage my friend, thumbs up as always👍😉
Thanks a lot for the visit mate!
Das war richtig knapp… Respekt an den Piloten 👍💪
Danke!
Good cam work.
Thanks so much for your kind words!
OMG! Great catch Pedro
Thanks a lot Ralf!!

Woah! Amazing Catch
Thanks a lot for watching mate!
It was crazy to see this live! good job Pedro❤
Thanks a lot, the highlight of the year so far!
For shure Pedro🎉
At least the door/fuselage plug didn’t blow out.
Sure!
Sempre excelentes imagens.
Obrigado pela visita Teresa!
With the angle and perspective that almost looked like a VTOL landing maneuver!
Thanks for watching!
Great job 👏
Nice capturing 😍
Thanks for watching mate!
Tremendo.✈️
Obrigado pela visita!
*Excelente ✈️🎥*
Muchas gracias amigo!
Bem apanhado Pedro 👍
Brutal ✈️
A tua imagem de trás tb ficou brutal!
Great video my friend 👍
Thanks a lot mate!
The fan blade tips dug into the soft inner cowling and scrubbed material off and through the engine.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome ✈️😳😬
Obrigado amigo!
Probably the high descent rate from 0:28 is due to windshear and because the wind shifted from nose to tail it made the engine stall for a second. Anyway, good job to the pilots.
Severe windshear was reported indeed!
Fantástico :)
Obrigado 😃
Uau!!!😍.. incrível!!
Obrigado pela visita Jorgiane!
@@MadeiraAirport 🥰🤙🏼🤗🤝🏼✈️ Pedro!!
My man !! This pilot is boss.
Sure is!
Classic wind shear. Aircraft just fell out of the sky. Pilot flying did a good job there.
Indeed, skilled pilot!
Cool
Thanks :)
Flipping heck...that was quite scary!!
Imagine from inside!!
@@MadeiraAirport I was on it and I didn't think it was too scary. (But probably quite a bit scarier if you're already afraid of flying and has never experience a go-around before.) A couple of seconds of wobbly final descent, engines coming back on, a hard bounce, some more wobble and then after a couple of seconds it was quite obvious that we were out of it. Before those seconds I was trying to figure out if we were going to continue to bounce down the runway or go-around. Actually quite a good and calm cabin crew. Within a few seconds the purser was on the PA saying, in a very calm voice, "well, this airport has some tricky winds so this sometimes happens".
Visuel impressionnant
Merci Beaucoup!
An unpleasant and dangerous situation 😮😮😮
All ended well!
@@MadeiraAirport thank God🙏
Wow that was crazy! No other option but to go around there.
Indeed, was extreme downdraft!
@@MadeiraAirport fantastic catch man
Well handled by the PF considering the circumstances. Quite clearly TOGA was applied well before the touchdown. Not much else they could've done to reduce the sink rate. Good decision not to try a second approach as well
@@olivierbekaert6887 quite possibly yes
Indeed my friend, he tried to abort before touch, but the downdraft was crazy on that day!
✈️✈️✈️✈️👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching!
Great catch mate! Here before 1K views
Had to send this message a few times sry
Thanks a lot mate!
Wow lucky catch just wait until the media sees this!
they just spread it all over the place
Muito bem apanhado Pedro! Espetacular! Só não foi espectacular para os passageiros 😅
Verdade 😅
Went there on holidays, crazy runway, built on stilts
Yes, but safe!
I believe it's safe to assume that the aircraft survived the hard impact, and latter landed safely, as by now there would be some reporting of a crashed airliner.
If you had the time to read the description, you would have known it diverted to Gran Canaria, where it safely landed. This would have saved you from making assumptions.
Everything was fine, the only concern on the plane was the landing gear due to the hard touch, engine was fine!
Uuaauu, isso é muito lindo, ,🛬🛫
Obrigado pela visita Maria!
@@MadeiraAirport de nada ❤️
At 0:28 you can see the descent rate increase hugely, and nothing is done about it until nearly 6 seconds later when they bounce. Having flown this approach i fully appreciate the down draught as you approach the threshold here, but id be surprised if that was stable throughout those few moments.
Sure it was reported severe windshear!
I read about this in the news here in Sweden yesterday, it departed from Arlanda airport, Stockholm, Sweden. It didn’t sound this dramatic in the official news, they just said it was diverted due to engine problems, like they didn’t even try to land at Madeira.
SVT did just mention windy conditions, so apparently different versions of this incident. But thanks to this channel we can see what was really happening.
Wow, it was across the news!!
@@MadeiraAirport Yes, national TV and radio as well as the news papers. SVT, the public television also has a video from inside the plane with people screaming. The Portugal News shows your video as well as Aftonbladet. Unfortunately CZcams doesn’t allow me to add links here.
hahaha min bonus pappa är piloten, han säger att inget va fel med motorn. Madeira är känt för att ha extrem turbulens vid marken så det blir som ett fritt fall om man har otur
It so hard landing 😮😮
sure it was!
The compressor stall was probably a result of the left main landing gear taking the brunt of the hard impact with the runway. It probably shocked the engine enough to upset the combustion section of the turbine.
I make this assumption because the stall occurred after the hard landing impact with the runway. The compressor stall most likely occurred seconds after the engines was being throttled up for a go around.
@@olivierbekaert6887 Watch the video again. A loss of power from a turbine doesn't send instantly the plane into a dive. It was clearly a windshear.
@@1zanglangIt does look like windshear, and I think he pulled up a bit late. Isn’t a plane like this supposed to have a windshear detector and alert? Must have been a very sudden thing.
@@Tecnigod my stepdad is the captain, he said that it was an extreme and sudden windshear he tried to fly away as soon as the warning apeard but it was kinda late so they made contact with the ground. Nothing was wrong with the engiens
Read the description or watch my livestream from that day, windshear and downdraft reported all day long, the stall do not have any action on the hard touch
I was having lunch at The Workspace By Amparo just off the end of runway 23 when this happened and we were tracking this flight. It was quite gusty down there indeed!
Indeed, terrible conditions on that day!
Este aeroporto é mesmo o da Madeira? Imagens de fundo .....?
Claro que isto é na Madeira, ao fundo é a Ponta de são Lourenço
@@MadeiraAirport 👌👌
What is a compressor that stalled? I don't get it. Looks like he came down to late then too fast to me.
If you look carefully at the number 1 engine after the neo slams down on the runway, you'll notice a flash for a brief moment. That's when the engine suffered the compressor stall :)
isto é mesmo madeira?
Claro, filmado do miradouro do Rosário
muito bem apanhado pedro , nem acredito que vi isso ao vivo
Foi brutal!
A bit surprised he retracted the gear after smacking it that hard. If it suffered damage, it may not extend properly again.
Thanks for the visit!
Why is Porto Santo not an alternative? The runway seems to be long enough for an airliner, why diverting all the way to Canarias with Porto Santo just next door?
Plane need to go to a runway with more facilities
The captain first told us he was diverting to Tenerife Sud (after some time in a holding pattern), and then it was changed to Las Palmas because SAS had a standby crew there. For a while they were considering a new attempt with a new crew, which would have had enough working time left to also fly the return flight to Stockholm. Not sure if they checked if the standby pilots were FNC-cleared though. SAS only flies once per week to FNC during the winter, so don't have that many pilots that can land there, but has several flights per day to LPA.
In the end we had to wait for another A320neo that was flown down empty from CPH next morning (presumably using another standby crew), arriving LPA mid-day, but we had the same crew (both flight deck and cockpit) as the day before. And a less eventful landing that time around. 😁
Did it land in end as it never actually djowed uou how many attempts did it have
It returned in the next day with another airplane
When did this happen?
Last saturday

0:24 It just gets pushed down...
Windshear
Omg what happened?!
It's on the description :)
I'm going there in 2 days 💀
Hope you have a great flight!
Wow, so a compressor stall doesn't produce an immediate failure of that engine, making it inoperative? I saw only one burst of flame, then everything seemed normal.
Not always, a stall is just an interruption of the linear flow of gas through the engine. A bad engine stall will reverse the flow completely and you'd see flames come out the front. It's that type you're referring to that can trash an engine if not dealt with quickly.
@@lloydirving5697 OK, thanks for that info!
You have an example of the motorbikes, the powerful ones, when you press the throtle to fast, the fuel is injected before the air, so instead of burning inside the engine, burns when reach outside and get oxygen. Engine is completly fine
Wind shear.
Indeed!
At the past part of the approach, the sink rate is quite high and the pilot flare a bit late..causing the ac to hit hard n bounced back..
It's more like they tried to make up for the sudden loss of speed due to the windshare.
Thanks for the visit|!
