How to Hang RGB LED strips using J channel on your gutters for Christmas

  • I found this J channel at Lowe's Hardware and I am going to try to use this for a base to attach my RGB LED strips so I can hang them on my gutters for Christmas. I will use this J channel to make sure the LED's are straight and level on the house. I am not drilling anything into the house, just need a fast and easy way to install and remove the Christmas lights on my gutters. The less time I spend up and down the ladder, the better, just hook and go...lol.
I do see a few issues which I point out, but yours might work out better. There are different sizes of the J channel, so get the size you need for your gutters.
Any pointers, let me know below. I am still planning out my layout..
J channel from Lowes (might find these at Home Depot also):

LED clips (various eBay dealers for these):

I know I'm 2 years late but just found your video because I'm working on a similar project. I think instead of those clips, I'm going to use white zip ties, and hide power wires behind the J-channel. Thanks for posting this.

Rather than screws, I'm going to try and drill a hole above the current ones and use tie wraps to attach my IP68 addressable LED strips to the J channel. In addition, between the J channels, I'll use waterproof connectors (instead of the standard JST-SM connectors). Getting and distributing power on a timer will be a bigger challenge I think.

I actually used some stainless wire to mount them...I didn't have any small zip ties...it took longer but it worked out in the end. I am looking at another solution just in case I have to replace the LED strip..to make it easier to replace.

This is super helpful. I've been looking for a way to attach LED strips without actually gluing them to the gutters or screwing them directly into the siding. I've been thinking of building my own hook type thing, but this seems to be a fantastic solution! I will give j-channels a try! Thanks for posting.

I was thinking about installing the lights right to the gutter.

    How about using rivets?

Good idea, I might have to try that this year, thanks for responding.

How did this work out for you? Have you thought of just using snips and cutting off the back side of the screws? I'm thinking of doing something similar but with pixel bullets, flipping the j channel around, drilling holes for pixels, and riveting short pieces of the j channel to the back side as hangers for the gutter.

It worked great, just be aware of then screws or what ever you use to attach the lights. Its very thin and I used small bolts with almost flush nuts on the back of them to hold the strips. I did use screws at first, but they were too long and would scratch the gutters. Hope that helps.

Well, when its on the top of my house and they are lit up, you don't even notice them. I even painted them black to match my gutters so you could barely tell they were on the house during the day time, but you could see the LED strip if you really looked. They were a time saver for sure!
