  • We went offshore fishing for mahi mahi and we explain the truth behind Florida's declining mahi mahi population and what could be causing the decrease in catches in recent years. We ran 10 miles offshore and then decided to drift live baits close to shore and we hook our biggest mahi of the summer! In the kitchen, Cookin with Puddin cooks up a recipe from our cookbook!

I had to laugh when Cizzle said a big ole stinky cuda. Once I started using Okuma reels, I put them on all my rods. I wish we had these types and groups of fish off the NJ coast when I was young and fished every chance I could. Talking about the commercial guys taking too many fish, contact the RFA. I'm a lifetime member and was involved with it's origin. Great vid kids.

I just learned from a commercial fisherman here in Virginia that mahi-mahi one pound per month in one year he'll wait 12 lb he got this information from the Virginia Marine Science I also think that people who charter boats want to fill the boat with fish to impress their friends and I can't blame the captains for obliging them that's the way they make money you two are awesome I love watching your videos and now the commercial fisherman that was talking to it's going to watch your videos

Being a commercial fisherman myself for 40 years now and target Dolphin fish in the South Atlantic. The commercial longline fleet must be North of the 31 line which is offshore of Jacksonville Fl. These fish travel North along the Eastern side of the Bahamas in early April and May on there way to the Outer Banks. We only get a few weeks to catch them before they migrate out of our range.
The Dolphin you are catching off South Florida are migrating through the Caribbean and are targeted by a ever increasing Commercial Panga fleet which have literally thousands of FAD's deployed offshore of every Island. They have no rules or regulations to be concerned with.

If you’re right about fishing pressure causing the slowdown in Dolphin fishing along most of Floridas coastline, it’s important to remember that we all mature as fisher people and sportsmen and women. About ten years into my hardest core fishing period, I think my late twenties early thirties, I was a bit of a fish hog now and then. When the boxes are full and they’re still biting bare hooks, it takes a lot of determination not to get enough for the freezer and the neighbors, etc. Anyway, in my mid thirties I stopped freezing fish. It made all the difference. I started enjoying fishing even more because there was less work right off the bat, clean only what you can eat fresh and maybe take a slab or two to your elderly neighbor. Sustainable strategy.

@@DarcizzleOffshoreAre the recipes for just saltwater fish? I'm interested if certain recipes, sauces, etc could be adapted to freshwater fish. Say mahi mahi would be similar to walleye or crappie? Certainly not in taste but texture or firmness of the flesh. Puddin's sauce he made here would work with this freshwater fish. Honestly think that outside of crappie or catfish, most freshwater fish are firmer. Add freshwater drum to the softer fleshed fish. Back to this sauce, I think walleye would be excellent with it. Maybe even catfish. Just wondering. Been watching your videos for years. Always fun and interesting! As you say, "Follow your dreams and keep on catchin'!"

Since the fishery is an Eco-system, you need to look at the other fish that are bait and what predators your species has.
Years ago, the east coast fisheries completely closed the striped bass season for 7-10 years. As a result, the population of striped bass numbers exploded, while blue crabs, white perch and sea bass numbers dropped.
When the season was opened up again after the ban, when you cleaned a striped bass, it was full of crabs, white perch and sea bass.
Not going to say that water temperatures haven't attributed to population reductions, but the explosive housing numbers of south Florida are encroaching on the smaller waterways that produce bait fish.

In SoCal they had to ban gill netting because they killed everything. Weren't supposed to catch Kelp/Calico Bass, but allowed some as a "by-catch" and the bastards would target the Kelp beds at night. My dad had a fit when he found a Kelp bed wrapped underwater with a gill net. Called the Coast Guard because it was at Santa Rosa Is. and they sent a boat out and caught them at night pulling it up. Totally illegal to net Kelp. So while sportfishermen had more restrictions put on them commercial fisher with nets were depleting inshore species. Devastated the Rockfish down to 800 feet. Now you're not allowed to fish deeper than 370 feet or near that, no more 500 feet rock cod fishing in Winter.

Florida had 500,000 people move here during the pandemic.,primarily down to South Florida. Even if only 20% of those new ppl bought or brought boats- thats 50,000 more boats minimum out on the water, catching fish.Between that, the charter boats, and the long liners, i think thats a lot more likely to be the cause, rather than a degree of change in water temp. You cant walk outside and tell any difference between a 95 degree day and a 97 degree day , so i'm just not buying that.
