A thank you gift to a friend - personalizing a telescope

  • A friend gave me a ZWO ASI 1600mm Cool camera for Christmas. What an awesome surprise! I wanted to give them a thank you gift. Something personal. I absolutely love Maksutov telescopes. My friend loves dragons, samurai, and pretty much all things Japanese. Viola! This video is just a documentary of that journey. I tried painting it several times and all resulted in failure. That’s due to my lack of knowledge of painting on metal surfaces. Ultimately I decided on the gun metal look and pulled it off. I found an awesome company called Fast Decals. I was able to customize high quality vinyl decals and solve my paint problem. The scope was an ETX 125 Observer. I added the Wegat Optical adapter so it could make use of SCT attachments. Finding 148mm ID tube rings is impossible. I tried making some out of wood but that also humbled me. I’m really happy with the end result. I think it will be treasured. Thanks for taking the time to watch. Clear skies.

Thanks Chuck. I hope he likes it. Funny you mentioned before about my having a guide scope setup that looked like yours. The ST80 top mount. I bring it up because I now have a 1600 mono. Lol! Now if I can just aspire to image as good as you... nah lol that’s gonna take time. Looking forward to your next video. I appreciate you taking time to watch. Clear skies.

If only I could give this two thumbs up! Firstly what a fantastic artist you are Garnett. I thought the video was both brilliant and very touching! Did I mention the ETX looked utterly amazing at the end too! Well done for getting back on the horse after the disaster with the clear coat, I felt your pain with that but it was worth it in the end. I wonderfully touching DIY project.

Thanks and he loved it. The guy gave me an astro camera for Christmas. That was awesome. I wanted to do something personal. I love Maks. I was planning to replace my Apex with that initially. The ETX is a very sharp scope with the added benefit of additional focal length to the Apex. In life I try to give my best as thanks. I’m really happy with the final results. I made some internal improvements also but thought that would be boring to show. I only wish the wood tube rings I designed hadn’t split. They were pretty cool with wood burned dragons on them. The body diameter of the ETX is 148mm. Very difficult to find rings that fit. I probably should have drilled a dovetail to the tube. I believe he’s getting custom rings made. I appreciate you watching and your comments. Everything in life is a gift. Breathing is a gift. I only wish everyone could see it that way. There’s a lot of hatred in the world. Occasionally it’s important to show some example of appreciation. This community is awesome. It’s my escape from the politics of the world. That’s my driving passion. The connection with the universe. OPT has been getting my mount to me since September. Lol. I’ve had lots of time to be creative. To thank you for your kind words I can share some also. I love your channel. I think you have a very honest and scientific approach. You’re an asset to the community. It’s always a pleasure to watch your content. Never give up helping. It is through one another that people grow. It’s refreshing to have folks like you, Ray, Martin, etc. I think there’s unfortunately quite a few people who have sold their opinions to endorsements. That’s unfortunate and can be misleading. Your content is a gem in the midst of such commercialized nonsense. Thank you for visiting and supporting my efforts. I don’t particularly care for being flashy or sharpened to the edge. I just try to be useful and provide solutions to common problems. In the information age there’s no reason anyone should repeat others mistakes. I’ve found that if you examine life open minded you could even learn a lot from a child. It’s not hard to determine who is who. You’re work is brilliant. You’re efforts are wonderful. Best wishes. Clear skies.

      @@GarnettLeary Thanks
I watched your video telling us to Batch Process a set of subs before stacking. I'm trying Sequator and DSS. I did the batches with RAW Therapee and post using GIIMP.
      EXIF is 300 mm f5.6 Tamron on a GH3 - ISO 1600 - 60 X 60 seconds for an hour of Orion.
The Sequator gives me a lot of color right at first that doesn't need much post processing and won't take much post without over exposure. DSS gives me a sort of gray image from the same batch of images with all the same EXIF settings. I can get color from DSS but it takes a lot of steps. I'll also experiment with lower ISO for Orion.
Do you have any other tips or videos on that subject? Thank you.

At that price, and your location, I’d go for an 8” Skywatcher Dobsonian. Lots of aperture, easy to use, and fantastic for planetary detail. That’s my top choice.
