    Really happy with Voigtlander lately. The 28mm f2 and 50mm 1.2 are stellar lenses and I could not be happier with those 2 lenses. For 35mm i'll be sticking with my FLE (not the newest one but the one the new one replaced), all time favorite lens. Keep up the great work Voigtlander.

    First thing I really noticed is how much more the Summilux seems to draw a sharper line of delineation between the zone of focus where your head is, and the background, probably accounting for that "pop" we so often hear about. Mind you, it's also sharper. But the Nokton certainly does fine. (I'd have loved to have seen how the Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm f/1.4 ZM did in this competition.)
    Of course, we've hit that point now where all these lenses are so good, that at the end of the day what really distinguishes an image is its content, as opposed to a few percentage points of technical differentiation.

    I have just tested this new Voigtlander 35 mm f 1.5 in its V. 2 (aluminum) against the Summicron 35 K. of Bokeh, Summicron 35 ASPH. (V. 1), TTartisan 35 MM f1.4, Voigt 35 mm f 1.2 V.III, and Voigt 35 mm Lanthar (f.2).
    The results are (all 35 mm lenses were tested at f2 focusing on the center and looking at the corners seen at 200% and 300%) :
    1-Voigt Lanthar,
    2-Voigt f 1.5,
    3-Voigt f 1.2 V. III, (f 1.5 and f. 1.2 lenses are close though, the plus of the f 1.5 (and probably its raison d'être) is its compactness)
    4-Summicron ASPH (close though),
    5-Summicron Bokeh (slightly softer in the corners but sort of holding on in spite of its age),
    6-TTartisan (very soft corners).
    Even at f. 1.5 and with its compactness this lens competes with the Summicron ASPH at f. 2. Great lens!! My only regret is that Voigtlander removed the small physical red dot/dome on the lens itself which was present on the previous lenses (replaced by a red dot on the mounting ring and "35" engraved on the lens where the red dot used to be).

    Thanks for the nice and interesting review. I really like the Voigtlander glass, especially their Nokton and Apo Lanthar line-ups. With the Noktons they seem to go a bit more for the classic look, and with the Apo's more modern. They give these rich saturated colours, which few other lenses render in the same way. I have the older 35mm f1.2 Nokton which I use on the Leica CL and Sony A7iv, which has always been amazing. I am sure this newer version will be even better. Would be interesting to see how it compares to the 35mm f2 Apo Lanthar, which didn't fully win me over (the 50mm f2 Apo Lanthar is awesome, and so is the 65mm f2 macro Apo Lanthar for E-mount).

  • @dhritimanbatchu
    @dhritimanbatchu Před rokem +2

    This is probably a noob question but I'm curious - many reviews claim that the M mount lenses don't fully resolve the sensors on mirrorless cameras (especially towards the edges) because the filter stack on the surface of the sensor is much thicker than the one on the M sensors. Leica M sensors have specially designed conical micro-lenses on the sensor to maximise performance from rangefinder lenses? Which is why they often find differences in rendering from M cameras to Canon/ Sony/ Nikon etc? So I'm wondering if the true optical quality would be revealed on an M body?

    • @btonelli
      @btonelli  Před rokem

      For the most part the nuances are minor. The edges can be slightly soft depending but from my experience I didn’t find much difference. Some may disagree on this, and while the Leica SL range is designed more so than others to resolve M lenses to their true potential, the lack of using these lenses on leica bodies doesn’t take away from the overall look

  • @fededuran2523
    @fededuran2523 Před rokem +3

    One thing nobody normally addresses is the lack of QC on Leica cameras & lenses, very obvious after reading some of the problems a lot of photographers have had both with the M11 and the 35 lux fle v2.
    If you want a rangefinder camera, Leica is the only way to go and you have to deal with the risk of a faulty unit, but regarding lenses Voigtlander is becoming a dead serious alternative to the super expensive leica glass. This 35 1.5 looks promising and confirms that Cosina knows how to do beautiful lenses (like for instance the 75mm 1.5, the 50mm 1.2 or the apo series).

      @@btonelli Used to own almost new M9 with 6 Leica lenses (all purchased together with the M9), and after few years of use, all of them with the exception of Summilux-M 75/1.4 needed some sort of maintenance or repair... loosening lubricants, lots of dust getting inside (but not inside my other lenses from other brands), factory rf calibration issues, then the faulty-rusting sensor, issues reading many SD cards, occasional camera freezes, loose screws falling off... and turnaround times for Leica factory repairs are extremely long. Now I own 7 M-mount lenses, 2 of them Chinese (7A, TTa) and 5 Voigtlanders, all purchased new, previously also owned a few Zeiss ZM lenses, and neither of them has given me any problem... the factory calibration of all those Voigtlanders was perfect, lubricants work perfect after 6 years of continuous use is warm and cold, almost no dust inside, everything holding tight...
      So I'm very happy I can pick lenses that are much more reliable in my experience... if only I can also pick a non-Leica M-mount rangefinder body with quiet shutter too :). The IQ of the non-Leica lenses is so close that in the real-world I do not see a difference for my work; and actually I prefer character of some non-Leica lenses more (CV 25/4 against Elmarit 24, CV 28/2 against Cron 28 Asph, CV 50/1.5 II against Lux 50 Asph, ZM Planar 50/2 against Cron 50, 7A 75/1.25 against Lux 75/1.4...).
      So, same as @Fede, I have absolutely no trust in Leica craftsmanship and QC - it's mostly old film Leicas what was reliable, but even those were seriously over-engineered and therefore prone to failures (comparatively to other cameras).. and there were issues always, such as the tragic paint quality on some M6 or M7, can't remember exactly... or the lubricants, or fogging of vintage lenses (comparatively massively worse than Nikkors or Rokkors of the same vintage).
      I do love Leica because it still gives me the rangefinder experience, I love the brand heritage, but I've never had 1/10th of the Leica-related problems with gear from other manufacturers... and I went through endless Nikons and a few Canons over the past decades, and currently also have a pretty big collection of Fuji X-mount gear (1 problem - SD+battery door spring issue on X-E2 after 5 years of use; 1 lens problem - lots of dust inside XF 18/2 after 6 years of use) and Sony mirrorless (1 problem with loose lens mount on new A7, immediate swap).

      Yes and no. More options is always good, so I certainly encourage that. But I quite like their niche of manual lenses and how well they do it. The lenses are beautiful, they handle fantastically. For me it's the perfect intersection between modern cameras and manual glass with character (and the slower shooting experience that goes with it), while having capacity to render sufficiently for high resolution sensors. So I quite like them the way they are, and therefore own a few of them. If they become AF, then they need to meet other metrics and compete with many more AF lenses already on offer which may be more difficult. But I am just a hobbyist. Maybe for pro's, where speed and output matters more, AF is desired.

    The lens looks nice, but I would like to see the difference between the Voigtlander 35mm f1.5 and the Canon 35mm f1.5 ltm. Also there was no info/ tests regarding the distorsion factor. The construction difference between the Canon 35mm f1.5 ltm and the Voigtlander 35mm f1.5 is that the Voigtlander has 9 elements with 2 aspherical ones and the Canon has 8 elements. I was curious how much that influences the distorsion of each lens. The cat eye bokeh gives a good idea about the distorsion, but overall I would say this ia a mediocre review. It would be nice to know a little bit info on the differences between the Voigtlander 35mm f1.5 I and the Voigtlander 35mm f1.5 II. Currently only Voightlander and Canon make a 35mm lens with f1.5 . That is the only game changer: the fact that Voigtlander added a new lens in the 35mm f1.5 lens market.
