  • In this video I am going to review the Voigtlander 50mm f1.5 Nokton ii asph. It is a lens that is easily overlooked because of the 50mm APO and 50mm f1.2 Nokton from Cosina. If you love small lenses, this is probably the smallest fast 50mm with modern performance.
    Keep watching if you want to know how it performs against the wonderful Leica glasses (Summilux and Summicron 50mm)

    Your video has been really helpful to me. I've watched your channel over and over again. In the end, I decided on the Voigtlander Ultron II 35mm F2 and Nokton II 50mm F1.5 lenses to go with my Leica M7. I already had a summicron 35mm F2 asph, so I was able to sell this one lens and get two Voigtlander lenses. All your videos are helpful and of high quality. I think it will be a very successful channel soon. Thanks Jimmy!

    Great video. I love my Voigtlander 50/1.5 v2 - I have the nickel MC version. I used the 50/1.2 for almost a month and optically it was a great lens but it was way too big and heavy for the kind of walk around shooting I like to do. Thanks for your review!

    • @JimmyCheng

      yeah the lens is tiny for its optical performance. I wish Leica could do the same and offer us some tiny glasses

    Not sure if you have already or not, but you should check out the Nokton 50mm 1.5 version 1, the one with the vintage design. It does not have nearly as severe of a vignette as the v2. Its discontinued already, but you can still get them brand new, easily one of my favourite lenses and completely nulified my need to get a 50 summilux :)

    Just got mine today as an 'upgrade' for the V1 I already have and must say I'm a little disappointed. There seems to be more CA than V1 in many circumstances. And I wasn't expecting that. There's no doubting that it's sharper than V1 but the CA is troubling as it's supposed to be negligible. Perhaps I have a poorly made one but if it continues I'll be keeping the V1 and selling this one. The V1 I have is absolutely fabulous...

    Hi Jimmy, thank you for this very interesting and informative video! How would you say the 50mm Voigtlander Nokon ii compares to the 50mm ASPH Summilux? (And maybe how does the pre-ASPH Summilux compare to the ASPH Summilux?). Maybe that's another video I guess!

    • @JimmyCheng
      @JimmyCheng  Před 2 lety +2

      I'm glad you enjoyed it! compare to the lux ASPH, the summilux is a bit sharper wide open especially in the edges. Also, the Summilux has a bit less color fringing, but both performed very well. The drawback of the Summilux here is the bokeh balls after you close your aperture down from f2.8 onwards, it is just ugly. While the main drawback of the Voigtlander is again its heavy vignette. All in all, both are very capable lenses, but if you want the modern, clinical look wide open, I'd say the Summilux still wins. But if you don't mind the vignette then the Voigtlander is a much better money for value option. Hope that helps. Also, I've got more comparison videos like this coming :)

    • @JimmyCheng
      @JimmyCheng  Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you Chris, it seems I’ve accomplished my mission :) nah just kidding. I would say if you can sell the mk1 for a reasonable amount of money and you don’t mind the heavy vignette then probably yes. This lens is a bit sharper and quite a bit smaller which is my favourite point about it.

    Thanks for a great review. As I am not sure I could live with the vignette and I’m not bothered about the weight, and I can’t afford the Leica, how does the 1.5ii compare with the Voigtlander 50mm f1.2 optically? Keep up the great work.

    • @JimmyCheng
      @JimmyCheng  Před 2 lety +4

      The 1.2 is simply a marvel given the price point. In fact, it is still one of my all time favourite. If size and weight is not a concern definitely get it without any hesitations. Aside from clinical sharpness, it is better than the summilux 1.4 asph IMO, because it’s got all the delicious bokeh but without that crown like bokeh ball when stopped down. And much less vignette than the 1.5. I would say it’s a characterful lens wide open and technically wonderful lens stopped down to about f2 - f2.8. The slight haziness or rather hallow-like effect only adds to the character when wide open. If it was built by Leica, it would be at the same range as the Noctilux 1.2 asph which sells for almost 10 times the price.

      @@JimmyCheng Thank you so much for an excellent and very informative video. I think you've sold me. The Nokton 50mm f1.2 is the lens I want. If it produces any objectionable distortion, chromatic aberration, or vignetting, I can fix those issues to a large degree in Adobe Lightroom. What's difficult to fix, however, is flare or boring/clinical imagery. On the other hand, if I were doing commercial work, I would probably use the APO Lanther. Because I'm only a photo hobbyist and I enjoy post processing, I'm going to choose the Nokton 50mm F1.2. 👍

    Hi Jimmy, you own all the 3 voigtlander 50mm, f1.2, f1.5 and APO, which one is your favorite ? The f1.2 pleasing bokeh draws my eyes, but the f1.5 is so compact that I love, and itsbokeh is not that behind the f1.2 except the swirling and vignette.
