Cousin went to kumon, he had to do math afterschool everyday for like 2 hours and barely had enough time to play, all that for a medal/certificate aint worth it for me bruh
My elementary school was filled with kids that all went to separate tutors (side note: I grew up in a predominantly Sri Lankan community so they all called it “toushin”) and I remember being so confused when a bunch of the other students were able to catch on to a subject so quickly. I grew up thinking I was stupid, but it turns out all the other kids were getting twice the amount of school than me. 😑
Although i was a kumon kid now, i could confirm that is not true man. Beside that negative side that you said, there is many positives. I'm a 5th grader on school, and i sometimes feel some difficulty on math. I joined Kumon when i was in 4th grade. I could say that it's much helping me. I was like being confused on the first time i joined Kumon. The instructors doesn't let me to use my fingers to count; and i feel like it's very hard, even though I was working on addition and subtraction; yeah you know for a 4th grader. But, that habit is like over time disappeared. I jumped on the next level, an then next, and so on. I successfully completed level F, and now I'm at level G. I was so proud, because now I have studied math in Kumon beyond my school studies. The one that motivated me is that Kumon have given me a "One Level Above Grade Level" medal. The instructor was also very kind, though. The thing that i want to say is : Don't give up easily. Here : When a kid comes to kumon, they easily say and feel like "it's so hard!", "kumon sucks!". I also feel that way when i came on the first time. But now I realized that it's was wrong. I became more confident at math, and that became very understandable. My math test score at school; guess what : i always got a perfect score! Even though Kumon homeworks sometimes makes me tired and emotional, I could say that I still want to continue attending Kumon lesson until I be the Completer. I just wanna say to all of my Kumon mate's here, in the world : "So just keep moving guys, to keep your life balance. Just imagine you're riding a bike. You must keep moving right to stay balance? You guys are still young. You have many chances to keep learning and exploring, and discover about your skill, and things you love." ❤😊
I used to go to Kumon when I was in like third grade because I needed help memorizing my multiplication tables quick enough and for at least four months they only had me do simple addition (like 2+2, 5+9) and pulled me aside if they ever saw me touch my fingers to count or made a mark on my paper that wasn’t an answer. I had several hours of homework every night that was only simple addition and was often brought to tears due to how late I would stay up overwhelmed by the amount of work I had to do. I have adhd. it was torture for 9 year old me to be forced to sit in a chair not only for the 7 hours of school but two more at Kumon and more at home. I actually wanted to end myself because I was being to suffer more with math at school because sometimes I mixed up the simple addition answers with the simple multiplication answers. Anyway a decade later and I’m pursuing a bachelors of science so it didn’t end up too bad.

I did Kumon for 5 years, and I have to say, it was the most mentally draining shit I have ever done, until i quit just last week. It’s tiring to go into a classroom for another 2-3 hours doing classwork, after you already went to actual school for 7 hours. And after you’re done with the classwork, you’re sent with even MORE homework, which takes up a lot of your free time, and mental health. If you ever think about going to kumon, take it out of your mind. It’s a waste of time, waste of money, I mean seriously $250 a month to basically “torture” your kid. If you are planning to go to kumon, I wish you the best of luck, be prepared to experience mean teachers, toll on mental health, and hell.
My mom didn't send me to kumon or other advanced math class i do know that she doesn't love me at that point. All i wished was to be enrolled in advanced math classes so i can keep up with math classes in schools or even surpass most of the students in our school. I was even begging my mom to enroll me i didn't asked for anything materialisctic and stuff. All i asked was to be enrolled in other advanced classes aside from school
I kinda agree- but I'm in Kumon right now, and I do think there is some benefits ( also note I only take Kumon Math not Kumon English, my spelling is bad cause I am not fluent ). I started Kumon in 2nd grade if I can remmember and I'm at 7th grade now. When I was a kid I was failing really hard at math, getting C, D, or worse F. Now I always get A's! But- if you wanna do Kumon, do it EARLY. Maybe when you're just 3th or 4th grade cause Kumon has Levels, and the sooner you're in it, the sooner you'll get out of it.
I go to kumon and I do reading and I also hate kumon and they give me so many homeworks and they even scolded me when my answers are wrong because they didn't told me how to do it or what am I gonna to with it. You are a kid without knowledge of the cist of private school. 17k to start up here in Canada. So even based on my public school math skills, I do happen to appreciate a tried & true (old fashioned) approach to learning. Mastery-based. This new age of learning that isn't incremental & just plunks kids into segments of curriculum that don't follow the last lesson learned. Of course we have a generation of lost kids in our Gen Z's. It's tragic, really. Kumon kids ARE better off. I've seen the academic achievements & jealous I didn't place more focus on these lessons instead of gymnastics, dance etc.
The Canadian school system is a mess. I'm in BC and they just push kids through even if they are extremely behind. They didn't tell me until the end of the year that my daughter was behind in math, I put her in tutoring at Mathnasium and she loves it plus she's feeling more confident with her school work.

I’m on level J which’s 9th or 10th grade now. How does kumon work when u start? U take a placement test. As a fifth grader I placed around my level. However I used all the public school methods. Counting fingers, bringing long division all the way down the page, and more. The instructors hated so I was put in second grade….😢 Good thing I learn fast. I went up seven levels in a year.😅Yay! Kumon is good. Note this though: Kumon only works if ur willing to appreciate the work to become more intelligent rather than the destination.

I agree that kumon sucks but for the wrong reason i hate kumon bc is harrrd as hell but i u gotta understand that kumon can actually make u very good at math and bc of this im 12 and im doin 14 year ol math bc of kumon
