To make their return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans after six years of absence, BMW created the most efficient engine they have ever created and trapped it to the first M8 car ever made. The result was an endurance powerhouse racer named the 2018 BMW #1 M Motorsport M8 GTE. The M8 GTE used a BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology engine restricted to 4 liters by regulations, however this remarkable engine could produce 592 bhp. Over 700 pieces fitted into the engine came from other BMW Motorsport projects. This car finished 5th in the 2018-2019 FIA World Endurance Championships and came in second in the 2020 IMSA SportsCar Championship results.
