The Red Telephone Box is a comedy-drama mystery set in the north of England, penned by Ken Whitmore with its initial broadcast in February 1986. Chief Inspector Raymond Cockfoster, portrayed by Bob Grant, is an eccentric London-born copper newly assigned to a town rife with bizarre murders. The story unfolds as Cockfoster and his partner, Detective Sergeant Frogman (Christian Rodska), are enmeshed in a perplexing case involving multiple decapitations. One of their early encounters significantly raises the stakes when a character, apparently still talking over the phone moments before, is found headless. The eponymous red telephone box stands as a silent witness in front of a house shadowed by a series of gruesome discoveries. As the investigation deepens, the eccentricities of the local population come to light. These include Dr. Lamb (Ronald Herdman), a cricketing police surgeon, and an assortment of quirky suspects such as the naked cabinet maker Peter Royle (Finetime Fontayne), ex-con butler Benjamin Dobell (John Hollis) with his unusual fondness for Mahler, and Mrs. Victrola (Patricia England), the enigmatic victim’s wife. The comedic edge of this thriller is sharpened by the bizarre scenarios and Cockfoster's attempts to stay rational amidst the chaos. With vivid characters like the Victrolas-Angela (Dorcas Morgan) and the mysterious, imperious matriarch Mrs. Victrola-the town's peculiarities add layers of intrigue. Directed by Alfred Bradley, The Red Telephone Box distinguishes itself with its unique blend of humor and suspense, underlining Cockfoster's struggle to maintain his composure and solve the baffling decapitations circling the peculiar red telephone box, a staple of British culture.
